  1. Thanks GLynn41 for asking a question I am sure many ponder. Great advice given by experienced players / designers above. Thank you all.

I prefer RT play but beyond Company level WeGo works better for me to keep things organized and clear. RT"commanding a battalion" is (IMO) too chopped up with micro pausing for me to get the best understanding of what needs attention and what is developing.

As IanL noted, watching the turn at high level and replaying at lower level for action areas helps a lot. I even keep a sheet of paper on a clipboard and a pencil (old school:)) next to the keyboard to make notes of what needs to be done for the next move.

Since you have years of CM play time, you already know "commanding a battalion" in CM is not a quick afternoon game. Pace yourself and as George says "Enjoy the journey :)" and have fun :D.

  2. "....Two expertly crafted campaigns that have been play balanced and vetted by the same guys who work on the content for all our games is definitely not a "couple of maps". Steve

Giving the first scenario BSBP 01 Honor a crack and getting spanked by Red AI in some surprising ways:).

Kudos to the Battle Pack Designer✅

Yep... more than a couple of maps... more like a bargain and I am only on scenario #1!

Here's a biggie for designers that has come with 4.0:

On map mortars can be used to AI Area Fire anywhere on-map within their range--regardless of LOS.

In other words, the AI can now prep a position with arty before attacking it at any time during a scenario.

Yes ? and a solid improvement for on map mortars.

....... Which brings us to today :D

The fun thing is that for a while CMFI will have the best, most up-to-date TO&E of all WW2 CM games.  Because inevitably we found things along the way that required fixes which apply to CMBN/CMRT/CMFB.  We'll be putting out patches for the other games to bring them up to the same standards, but maybe we should let CMFI customers have some bragging rights for wee bit of time :D

    Steve

Early CMFI fan from the start for the many unique features.

Terrain is more wide open than other titles. Add GL✅ and you get a ton more interesting units to battle with. Just an interesting title as it is IMO

Soon... with the most up-to-date TO&E of all WW2 CM games... I am all in again for amore in Italy??

Machines sometimes harbor evil spirits. And it doesn't do at all to get forgetful around them. One time years ago I was cleaning a printing press. To make a long story short, I was lucky not to lose some fingers, but they hurt for months and one would never be normal again.

    Hi Michael,

All digits is a 'good thing'. The 'sometimes harbor evil spirits' potential in our modern machines is much more advanced from years past.

    Enjoy CM v4 ... it don't bite us :)

    Agreed Michael.... :D:D

Just looked at what I tried to post earlier.... and it got vaporized before it got posted.... :D

Another darn machine issue (all digits accounted for);)

Have fun with CM tankgeezer and recover quickly and fully.

Yup!; 'ToolTimeTim' finally gets it right, I now have functioning CMFB, CMBN, CMRT & CMBS running the v4 game engine.

:D You are correct about installer on Mac. Great you have everything running the v4 game engine.

Sorry about your accident. Stuff can happen quickly under vehicles. Reading yours made me think of mine......Years ago I got lucky when I was positive I had a gas tank drained and gas line clamped shut. Pull the line and gasoline went flooding down my arm onto my chest and as I tried to slide the creeper and myself from under this monster peeing gasoline on me.... my foot pulled the HOT electric work light off the car... dropped on the floor ... a few inches away the now pool of gasoline under the creeper ...

I got VERY LUCKY.... as shop owner was passing by... heard me YELL... and kicked the work light away from the gasoline.... "in the nick or kick of time" Had he not I could have been a crispy critter in a bad way. I got VERY LUCKY..

Heal quickly and fully. Enjoy CM v4...

  7. Great to read your experience rogue189?

CMSF is not CMBS for sure. Warfare is more deadly much faster in CMBS. Russians are heck of a challenge in CMBS.

Many are hoping to see CMSF brought up to V4.0 some day. Would make CMSF a lot more difficult with all the changes in 4.0 engine.

You are welcome Markus544. I am on an Intel Mac most of the time. Hackintosh lets me jump over to Windows side as well. Most of the sound mods I have used work on PC side. Can't say the same for Mac side. Dabbled in adjusting / modifying PC sound mods for Mac side with occasional success. Never have nailed down the exact sound file features required.

I tried to change the intro sound to something other than the standard one.  I changed the file from MPEG 4 to wav and it does not work.  Does anyone know if the size of the file matters?  Anyone have any ideas I've tried everything I can think of.

    Hi markus544,

Listing the features of your system PC / Mac, etc. could help others answer your sound query. Mac vs. PC files need different parameters... and I don't know the answer but others might. We both can learn how to make new intro sounds :).

there is SO much potential for new content as more histories of the Iraq/Afghanistan wars comes out.

grunt_GI nails the  bulls-eye regarding one of the reasons CMSF V 4.0 is so desirable in the New Engine form.... we want what was great and more new content in V 4.0 goodness?

    4 hours ago, ncc1701e said:

Personally, I am considering the amount of work is too big to update the existing CMSF content.

We need .... (SNIP see above^)

That is why I agree with LongLeftFlank, it could be very much a module of CMBS. Perhaps a big module at the price of a full game but a module that will bring 4.0 or 5.0 enhancement plus UAVs, EW, and Russian army into Syria.

You are correct regarding the volume of work. Looking at a very heavy lift to reach back and bring everything good forward to V 4.0. From a practical business sense, a V 4.0 must be offered as a 'new game' considering the many, many hours invested and the features offered... it really is a new game.

I would differ regarding blending CMBS & CMSF for several reasons. (Guessing here... so I could be wrong )

CMSF V4.0 will most likely be focused on bringing that theater into modern game goodness. Mixing CMSF with CMBS would not be wise business / customer wise. These games are both modern but CMBS is really very current. CMSF V4.0 would be fantastic game features but less current machines. That said CMSF V4.0 could be modded to represent many modern military events.

I suspect if the business side of CMSF V4.0 made sense ... interest and  sales... we could see a NEW MODERN CMSF... after CMSF V4.0... but that would be further down the development road.

I am hoping for CMSF V4.0 but do still play the Mac CMSF Bundle and still have fun :D. This should be a tribute to Battlefront's skill ... especially considering all the FANTASTIC WWII games they offer.

CMBN, CMFI, CMRT, CMFB... and the New Modern kick j-azz CMBS✅ .

So much game ... i need more time in a day to enjoy:)

I agree... the CM community is amazing? As Combatintman and others have noted...  when CMSF V4.0 arrives with original content at the new engine level of play there will be much rejoicing and a renewed interest in building / reworking the New CMSF.

I'm really keen on a CMSF v 4. Was almost going to buy the existing big bundle but I'll wait until it gets updated. Then I'll buy it on day one for sure.

No idea when CMSF v 4 will arrive. I can say when I purchased the CMSF Mac Big Bundle (on day one it came out:)) I was kind of blown away at how having all the modules in the CMSF Big Bundle made the game shine like the gem it is?. Adding all the great 'Golden Scenarios" from many years of designers work and I have yet to play everything CMSF Big Bundle has to offer... still a great game.

What @sburke said is totally correct. But come on this is basic logic stuff :) . CMSF is a pretty big family with multiple modules and some unique features (spys, IEDs etc.). One huge issue is going to be simple compatibility of all the user content that has been created (just getting the actual files that exist to load correctly). Then there is the whole how much effort do you expend to ensure that the older scenarios play well. The list of work just piles up as far as the eye can see - just to get what they already created working well and playable. Then people ask "can we have x, y and z new stuff". It's all good. All good ideas. All very tempting. How much work is there to do again? I think we can all do that math and come to the same conclusion - while no one but Steve knows for sure: "don't hold your breath for a bunch of new things - cause you might die".

    :D

Well we are all gonna die... but CMSF V4.0 would give us a BIG smile before we do :D

I am sure CMSF fans have a long list of "x, y and z new stuff" but CMSF V4.0 alone will be a HUGE improvement in terms of game play features alone. Will feel all shiny new with the engine change for sure.

+1 on that, my old coonhound is so nearsighted now that I wonder how he can walk in a straight line, but he can still trail everything that went through the yard the previous night by scent alone, and show me every spot they even paused for a moment.  My shepherd/rottie mix can't do it, but he can tell me by sight and hearing if one of my neighbors is sitting on their porch on the other side of the woods. Between the two, nothing even comes near my place that I don't know about.

^^^ Great thing about having critter companions both in City and Country. Not much is going to slip past their attention and ALERT to owner when you are busy doing chores.

The proper way to judge CM is to ask if these sorts of "crazy" results are happening proportionally or disproportionally across all gamers' experiences across all the games they play.  You guys collectively have probably had more tactical battles (at CM scale) than in the real war, so it's not like your experience sample size is small :)

As for someone who lives far away from light pollution, I take the darkness for granted.  For those of you who are not familiar with it, the easiest thing to do is go into a room (basement if you have one!) that has no light pollution from things like LED status lights, moonlight coming in through windows, etc.  Turn off the lights and go to the middle of the room.  Turn around a couple of times and then take a few steps.  Do that a couple of times then try to find your way back to your lightswitch.  Despte the fact that you should have excellent awareness of the "terrain" because you're intemiately familiar with it, I'm guessing you'll have a tough time getting the lights back on!

And with that suggestion, our lawyers state that Battlefront accepts no responsibility for any damage to person, property, or emotional state.  Customers electing to experiment with the dark do so of their own free will and agree to hold Battlefront harmless for any adversity resulting from said experience.  Or something similar.  Since we don't have laywers I'm only guessing ;)

    Steve

Good point re: tactical battles (at CM scale).

Like "cup hooks"... Package for cup hooks ".... misuse can cause serious injury or death..." laywers but I'm only guessing ;)

Night time is not just night time in the game. Moon rise and moon set and all the phases of the moon are accurately recreated and heavily influence illumination/LOS. I recall a scenario designer was having trouble getting a night battle to work. I suggested he go on the internet and check when moon rise was that day of the year. And yup, he had picked a moonless night to try to fight in. I remember putting together a battle after sunset for CMSF. The environment would get darker and darker then would get light again. I was scratching my head over it til I realized at that particular day of the year sunset is immediately followed by a full moon rise re-illuminating the landscape. B)

^^^ This is a feature I also noticed in playing around in the editor for a tactical night battle! Took a while to figure it out... but when I did... pretty cool influence illumination/LOS.

When you order the v4 upgrade bundle pack you get access to a dizzying array of install packages. If you just pick one game you will be less dizzy. One of those install files is the all in one install for the Mac. That will be able to install the base game and all the modules and packs on your Mac. They will all be there. Once you activate your game with the v4 code you will be able to play the base game on the Mac. There will also be (he says with confidence) an executable that will allow you to activate the modules and packs that you own. With their keys. My understanding is that this will work. Having said that your email to sales could be a wise thing to do. I know the base game keys that were issued before this were OS specific. If the module keys were never OS specific then this will just work. If they were OS specific then there could be a glitch. My understanding is that Steve's goal is for this to be possible but you should probably get verification that this is already just going to work or that they will help you get it to work if you run into trouble.

^^^ Your understanding is my understanding :) and correct as far as I 'understand'. Well phrased IanL ?

Mac All-in-One 4.0 installer worked great on a pseudo-Mac (homebuilt Mac Pro-alike using compatible parts). Made the switch from Win to Mac back at CMBN and haven't looked back since.

Installation has been easy-peasy ever since (CMBN+, CMFI +, CMRT, CMBS), including the 4.0 upgrade. Kudos to the Battlefront crew for making it ever easier to support my second vice, or is it the third? Hmm, velomobile, CM, scotch, or velomobile, scotch, CM?

:D pseudo-Macs are a 'gate way' vice ? to more velomobile, CM, scotch:)

Your theory would have a lot more weight if it hadn't happened so many times before, to Combat Mission, and only Combat Mission.

We use a piece of OpenGL that a lot of folks probably don't, and we use it hard. It should work; it's part of the core OpenGL specification. Apple broke it. I'm not sure what the "theory" in question is supposed to be, but I know precisely what's broken, and I know precisely who broke it and when, and in neither case is it anything remotely like our fault.

So: Apple broke a core piece of OpenGL, apparently didn't test for it, and shipped it. They've known about it since January, when I first reported it, and have released at least a couple dozen OS seeds since then, so apparently they have no immediate plans to fix it. We created a workaround for the issue as soon as we discovered it, and will be shipping it in every game we release a patch for, until it's no longer needed.

Which party is the problem again?

"It is worth noting that the player receives no reinforcements and little in the way of refit in the 72 hour period.
Therefore you, the player, have to use your forces wisely, especially your panzergrenadiers. Keep your casualties as low as you can, for as long as you can. The key to success is close co-operation between your SPW, panzergrenadiers and panzers.
