  1. c3k, While I agree with you a little, this is usually covered in the manaul or a tutorial so maybe this is a better place for this. When you actully play the game it is "Live" and for the sake of immersion pop up boxes saying... You have 3 JAVs left with a 34% chance of taking out that tank to the front and 0% chance of taking out that BMP that has 100% chance of killing you next round. It is recommended that you "Hide" in the foxhole which will give you 20% chance of surviving both the tank and the BMP but only 1% chance of surviving the 105mm rounds landing in your AO in the next 32 seconds. ..would detract from the game. Obviously I am not bashing you or your idea but showing an extreme example that what you are asking for is very similar to people asking for to hit probabilities and the like. A lot of this game is learned by practicing and reading and studying. Even after 4 years of service I still ask a lot of questions and read these htreads to understand what I am doing wrong. That is part of what I like. You fire 40mm or a LAW at a T-62 and after awhile you realize that it is not bad luck your men died. Trial by fire is one of the best parts of this game....
  2. I just live in a ramshackle hut just over the hill from the village... I was beginning to feel sorry for you but I saw that you live in Northern California and maybe not as good as Southern Californai you are within spitting distance of at least watching some ladies on the beach or play some beach volleyball. OK, pick up the laptop, get a wireless card, and head off to the beach. You have a great opportunity to put us all to shame.... You could be playing CM:SF on the beach with the waves lapping at your feet while said Valkries and Milkmaids play tauntingly in front of you. Now naturally this might mess up your CM:SF play but at least it might marginally solve the lack of mate issue.... ...Oh by the way when they walk over to see what you are doing, maybe ALT-TAB over to something more interesting.....
  3. Area target some 105s either with HE for immediate death or some WP smoke to watch the slow burn. I like this better because you can listen to them beg for forgiveness and it gives you a chance to change your mind. Ready... (Call for Fire over) Aim... (Shot over) Fire.... (Splash Over) Almost as good a firing squad...
  4. Ok... I can understand the girls not liking war games and like social games more. Growing up there were not too many girls playing risk but a good majority played Monopoly. So there is a hidden desire to squash their opponent and take all of their money and hoard it but it can not be so evidently diplayed as in a war game. It has to be under the guise of Monopoly or Life or such things. I don't think the average wargamer is ready for the advent of the female wargamer. I guess it is our last bastion of a refuge. Somewhere we can crawl into knowing that we will not be followed, our haven where we can drown out everything else and hope for the type of immersion that will give us a couple hours of happiness. Dietrich, Your hope to find a gaming wife or girlfriend would hinge on you going to a Gen-Con or like gaming convention and see if there is any hope out there for you. Barring that, I'd say put the "mouse" down for a little bit and come out of the cave and venture forth among the "commoners" and see if you can find someone with those +2 attributes that makes every pixelmen's day...
  5. Once she created things then she moved onto blowing them up. My over-confident pixelmen might have issues with her...
  6. Mishga, Played another one of your scenarios.... Forgot the name but had the code name like PBSR or the like... Blue moving to contact on red in side the small village... I liked this one a lot. First thing I noticed was that you gave me like 4 spotters and at least 3 javs with 4-5 M1s.... I immediately shuddered and thought what does this evil lass have up her sleeve? Spoilers.... My guys started moving out and sent some infantry and Humvees on the recon. Arty was falling to my left into open pasture so I was beathing a sigh of relief on that one. I opened up against the first small cluster of buildings at the crossroads. Satified that i had surpressed it and having ample troops i charged forward to secure the crossroads. Well there were 3 BMPS behind the building in ambush, one of which was up in smoke so I thought I was done until the other two ambushed me. Well I went from that cluster of buildings and easily swept through the larger cluster to the left. I had my eye on the far objective line thinking that things were too easy so far. I mean hell the F-18s were not even put to use yet. I sent a Hummer over to check out the phase line and it hit a mine about 20 yards away so I sent some infantry in. I saw some enemy ??s in the trees so i swept through only to find a freaking BMP or whatever hidden deep in the trees. MY men thought that they had easy prey and ran into armor. So now I am thinking that only a woman would prey on guys over-zealousness to plant us into amubush after ambush. I saw another 3-4 BMPs in the far tree line and sent some arty on them along with F-18s and my JAVs up in the top of buildings. Had to quit early but those BMPs in back of the building and the other in the first clump of trees were really well done on their ambush orders.... Fun time playing this one... will have to give the others a go....
  7. Hey, Sorry if it has been addressed elsewhere, but is there any plan on making the purchase system a little easier in future games. I would love to just go to say Marines, scroll to infantry, scroll down to sniper, pick my gear and quality and be done. I know there is some command and control elements to this so maybe you could build the tree as you need it. So I could choose my platoon the way I see fit, it would than ask me to pick the appropriate command element, say platoon leader. At this point it would recognize my formation as a platoon and assign the name of 1st platoon with appropriate command and control being assigned to the platoon leader. It would be nice to have this bottom up building. Instead of the top down that is there currently. I find myself frustrated at deleting things only to open up the scenario and see I have selected far too many troops. Any help or ideas?
  8. I still have to vote for the open format and the ability to have the God view and use area fire as I deem appropriate. As an M60 gunner there were times that my leader would paint a target with either heavy tracer fire (out of command radius) or by direction from yelling or squaking. There were other times I would take the initiative as I heard commotion and saw firing going down range that there were possible targets inside a house/vehicle. So I would suppport the area with traversing fire even though I had no eyes on the target myself. Also the pre op order would have possible strongpoints marked on the map and I could always use my natural horse-sense to say i would not want anyone to get "set-up" in a certain area so I would surpress it. In the game I also use area fire to set up grazing fire in certain locations. Area fire is a neccessary evil. I kind of agree if you want to say that certain targets are harder to kill with area fire. But no delay maybe something in the code that would say if fire mode is area fire, to hit/damage modification takes place. Has some BMPs drive through some 40MM and AT area fire last night and no kills happened. It happended kind of like I figure it would have. The are a lot of things in this game that we have to "visualize". That is part of the beauty. My interpretation is going to be different than someone else's. Why dictacte how things will go when a small problem will likely turn into a bigger problem for more people?
  9. Maybe your opponent is gloating and hitting the "Continue Misery" button. What map are you playing?
  10. Mishga, Score one for the red guys.... ...I thought you said Meach liked the artillery and I also thought that you said that Meach squashed the idea of the battallion against platoon saying that it is no fun for the platoon.... Spoilers..... Played airborne on Elite and had a minor loss. After the initial pounding of my men by artillery right off the bat I am sitting in my foxhole cursing the Arty Gods and thinking to myself do i spread out or hunker down. Well the 4-5 tanks coming at me answered that question. Arty died down a bit and some of the tanks were dispatched. By about this time my srty was inbound on the men off to the right side as well my men pounding on them as they ran for the woodline. My heart sank as i saw the treeline off to the top left fill up with question marks and the remaining two tanks were charging me. I tried to break off a squad through the woods and into the depression on the left but they were nailed by one of the tanks. My AT squad for some reason could not get clean a clean shot off. So the tanke came to point blank and slaughtered everyone. I don't think I had time to use arty against the tanks (20 minutes) and they were always moving. My AT guys were also direct to the front so hard time killing them. I split my forces up so I think I'll try again and leave everyone concentrated in the middle and try it that way. If everyone is in the middle, I will probably lose the woods to my immediate left so that is unappetizing as well. A fun quick mission.... first time playing defense with Blue on a small scale....
  11. Frankly I don't understand the issue here, I think the game works just fine the way it is right now. You are asking for changes that are not realistic and dectract/delay from other important features of the game. Area fire is only as gamey as you make it to be. So it is essentailly a non-issue in single player. Thus, I don't see the nature of the debate. If you are saying area fire sucks and is unrealistic, it is pretty obvious that you should live by what you say and not use it. For multiplayer games, I think a gentelman's understanding of how it will be used in the game would be appropriate. If you can't reach a understanding or don't like the way the other guys plays, don't play them. You are asking to pervert the game in many ways that would screw it up for other people. Steve and the others have addressed this adequately and I think it is one of those areas that you develop work arounds and drive on. Last night I area fired a tree line as well as the approach of a convoy of vehicles. Both of these were practical and what my men would have done in real life. Maintain the flexibility to use area fire the way it is right now and if you think it has gamey, don't use it in whatever way you think is gamey. Problem solved.
  12. Meach/Mishga, You have mail.... Looking forward to giving it a go. It will be interesting to see how she treats my pixelmen and what devious traps are laid out. The poor bastards won't know what hit them... ...Enter the wrath of Mishga....
  13. Meach, I'll take you up on that... thanks... I was developing a fantasy board game, roughly a mix between poker, risk, Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons. At my peak I had about 30 artists out there drawing/painting for me. Some of these were very attractive ladies/girls. There is something about fantasy art that attracts the female interest hence the success of World of Warcraft. If you have some cute girls it is bound to attract more boys and thus the party goes until 2-3am playing on the computer. But alas, the WWII realms isn't as sexy for the ladies. But hey, I play WWII games and she watches her shows. Everyone needs a outlet.... Mishga, I bet you can design a mean scenario. I need one one my son and I to play blue on red. I still have not been able to convert him over to CM:SF. He loves COD, Company of Heroes and Faces of War. Maybe CM: Normandy will do it for him. Dietrich, yes that computer:girlfriend equation is a tough one to beat. Maybe Meach can give you some pointers on how to be able to play with your lass sitting on your lap or by your side. I still can't get that image of her sitting there doing calculations on her pad and programming away.... something too cool about that... Cheers, Falconander
  14. Meach, Holy freakin cow... Where do I find a wife like that? Talk about a match made in heaven... My wife just kind of looks blankly at the screen and wanders off. I don't think I have ever heard from a female on these boards yet...
  15. Had to start the campaign all over due to a corrupted save but now I understand a lot more about ammo and resupply. I also remember running out of artillery down the road because I used it free and easy in the beginning missions. So here I am on mission 2 and I have just about everything at my disposal, I have ships off shore, F-18s, Attack Copters, 105s, 81s and I even think some smaller mortars. Thing is my ground pounders with the support of the AAVs have a handle on things... So here is my questions. Are my AAVs resupplied with 40mm after each battle? How do I know whether my use of artillary/mortars will affect my next missions? How about my small arms ammo, 7.62 and 40mm. Is this replenished? How about AT and Javs? Shifting Fire and Ceasing Fire with my Arty has significantly helped. But knowing some of these would help as well. I don't want to get caught short down the road so any help is appreciated.
  16. I was doing Streets of Hamas when one of my back vehicles led another vehicle right through my convoy.... I mean right through. Never knew mu hummer could hold that AAV or whatever it was that drove right through him and out the other side. If it wasn't streets of Hamas it was another where you are in a convoy and have to check on some food collections points. I remember thinking... now damn.... I've read about vehicle pathing problems but I think that driver is saying to hell with this guy in front of me I am coming through....
  17. Lethaface, While not knowing what an A-10 Warthog will do against Syrian weapons, I have been on joint operations where the A-10s were called in and bombed a neighboring ridge. They were suppose to bomb our ridge but for safety they bombed the firing range one ridge over. I remember them streaking overhead I believe in the early dawn and releasing a thunderous pounding on that objective. I believe they were dropping their cluster bombs which were an awesome fireworks display. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/equip/gau-8.htm http://www.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?fsID=70
  18. No such luck, can't play the Brits until I get the British modul for Combat Mission. It would be like opening up Christmas presents a day early. I was with the Moat 'n Gators 1/508th in Panama, it was a sister battalion to the 82nd Airborne. So I am going with some US Paratroopers. I'll start with these guys and add a company with some snipers and mortars. I see you are from Scotland. My family has history going back to the Campbells out of Argyll. Went to a Scottish festival awhile back and Clan Campbell was not well received. It was pretty cool, each clan came out of the woods carrying torches and gathered around a huge bonfire that they lit and sat around and drank and ate. My kids really loved that night. As far as 40K goes, I played fantasy. I liekd the larger battle aspect so I imagine that is one thing that I will like about Flames of War. You know playing FOM and Combat Mission at the same time will make me an authority on WWII battles in no time....
  19. My only problem is painting 125 british infantrymen is driving me crazy!!! You aren't lying! That was the first thing I was thinking was undercoating and painting all of those little men. But the tanks, jeeps, planes and guns make it all worth while. Plus one of the guys I watched had some snipers that looked awesome. Not as costly as Warhammer, I've dropped over $1,000 playing that, but still will cost about $2-300 for the army I want. I am going to start with a small platoon that I should be able to field for about $20-40. Amazing what people will spend money on, so those who complain about Combat Mission, you don't know the start of things. Even such, miniatures are something that you can pass down to your kids and grandkids so it is well worth it. .... I've been thinking about it and it is the first thing I am doing after work on Friday is to stop by the store and pickup some Airborne Infantry...
  20. Noltyboy, What army do you play and how do you like it? TempV, Yes, isn't it uncanny that they are both made by a different Battlefront?
  21. Hey, For all of you waiting for different modules to come out, I thought this might hold you over. I came across this miniature game while hunting for some Warhammer items. It is called Flames of War and it is a miniature modeling game basd on WWII. Here is one site for supplies: [snip] I watched them play some battles over the weekend and it looks pretty good. The miniatures are smaller than I'd like to paint but given the large scale of battles it makes sense. Check it out and tell me what you think... I figure for the modders in WWII it might help visualize some battles as well. Cool stuff.....
  22. TheVulture, Awww man what a great reference to possibly the 2nd best wargame of all time.... Long live worms and the Great Concrete Donkey... (if you have kids this is a must purchase for PC, XBOX 360, Playstation... although regular worms is fun, I'd stick to the 3D versions)
  23. Webwing, I am throwing in the towel. I have little to no ammo, running short on time and have tried to push to the center but it is a meat grinder in there right now. I think on this one you have to push sooner towards the middle. It is imperative to hold the treeline, if not the small village to the left. Your men also have to be further into the trenches towards the middle. My men in ambush on the left were most successful if they occupied the furthest houe to the right. I was sitting back too long and spent too much ammo dealing with the left assault. If i had better firing lanes and containment (the left woodline) I think I would have had better chances on the middle. Funny v1.1 i found myself occupying the villages easier, this volume (on elite) due to ammo challenges I sat back to long. Hmmm....damned if I do....damned if I don't..... grrrrrr.... I'm going back to campaign, maybe another rainy day I'll give it a go again...
  24. I would think that you cannot get a mobility or fatigue factor from 5.56. I mean if your 12 mand squad grabs 2400 rounds, that is 200 a man or roughly 7 magazine(clips). Hardly enough to penalize a hard pounding grunt. If that machinegun team of 4 takes 2400 rounds of 7.62 each man is carrying 6 100 round belts which could get cumbersome. The bar just is a reference point and if maxd out means that someone else should be getting the other ammo. OK... my follow on question. I assume when my ammo level is in the yellow my men are more cautious about their targets and fire less with Red meaning fire when you see the white of their eyes. So if I want suppressive fire I better have everyone well into the green. If I want to conserve ammo I should rain in the range by using the target Arc right? Appreciate any clarifications....
  25. Are you running as admin as well? Right click the icon and click 'Run as Admin" TOW would not work for me until I did this....
