  1. I am seriously considering buying this game but it would be no question if this would play on NVidia 8xxx or ATI3xxx cards and Vista. I have delayed upgrading my computer just so CMBB/CMAK can still be played. Which is a shame as I would like the best of both worlds.
  2. Roach, I currently have a ATI800GT in my machine and I installed the 8.4 drivers. I have fog!! and have had it for about 9 months now wih my ATI card. I had never seen it before then and was amazed that it looked so good. I was thinking of upgrading but I think now will buy a NVidia 7xxx card at best or install the game on my son's computer with its ATI 1550 and completely upgrade my machine (which then will be suborned by my son to play the latest FPS games). Helm 123, I agree. It must be the video cards and not necessarily the OS as the integrated video is probably DX9c at best in Roach's machine. Knowing XP/Vista, I am sure that there are many other things that are going on but all I have read seems to indicate that it is the video cards that are causing the problems and not Vista. 3. Redwolf, If this is true then CMx1 should run fine if I have a XP machine and an ATI 3870 card in my machine (even though the 3870 is a DX10 card). DX10 will never be installed on an XP machine. From my understanding, CMC will work fine (and you can even play it without CMBB behind it) but I would love to see CMBB's usefulness extended into the future. I have been putting off upgrading my videocard for a few months now as I was afraid that this combination would not allow CMx1 to work. I am just curious. Was CMAK upgraded to work with DX6+ when it was released or is it still the same old DX5 engine?
  4. No prob Tom. There was a smiley face there (even if I could not see it). I hope this all works out as I know what you mean about balancing the wife and kids. That and a full time job does not leave one much time for other hobbies in life. I am surprised that I have gotten so much life out of the CMx1 series. Looking above my computer I see about 20 games, 10 my sons play and the rest I might have put 5 hours into each at most. CM though has given me enjoyment for 100s of hours. I would just hate to see that go by the wayside. CMC might give it a new lease on life but unless it gets to work with Vista and DX10, I do not see much futrue in this. I am hoping though that the CMx2 will give me as much enjoyment (just without the Finns and the Romanians and Italians etc.).
  5. I know, I should lose the negativity. I am all in favour of going open source (CMBB that is) as I really think there might be some people here that would be willing to try to get this to work with DX10. I am all enthused about CMC but it really puts a crimp in my plans to upgrade my computer. I might have to go with one machine that only has XP and the best DX9 card there is and one that has XP and the best DX10 card I can afford. Too bad as you would not beleive the amount of time I have spent with CMBB/CMAK. My wife grants me 2 hours every Saturday with a tall cup of coffee (Tims of course) and this has been going on for 2.5 years now. My 9 year old son is just getting into it. I guess CMSF et al will have to be the bee's knees then.
  6. I would hate to bring up any bad vibes to this wonderful news but is there any way that the initial CMBB engine wil be updated so that it will run under DX8 or DX9 (or we can only hope DX10). From reading the boards, it appears that if I upgrade to a ATI 38xx card, CMBB will no longer function. I would hate to miss out on this wonderful project for hardware reasons.
  7. Went to a conference in LA and do not have the hours to read all the posts in depth but I will ask a stupid question. Will we have the ability in CM:WW2 of creating a QB that does last a number of scenarios? I would love to have the operationhal component back as I am playing "33rd in Berlin" in a PBEM game and am loving it. Pushing the line forward, worrying about supply, creating enemy pockets is great fun. Being able to replicate this to some degree would be great. Also, the victory conditions seem to lack something. I do not think I have ever played CMSF without a total victory for one side or the other. Will we get (or do we already have) a sliding scale of victory? I liked the 44% to 56% creating a minor victory.
  8. Thanks Steve. I agree that no matter how you develop the point system, it will never be perfectly accurate. But that is OK with me. As an example if a PzVI E (Late) is worth 222 points and you code the M4A1 at 141 I am happy with that. The M4A1 could be 130 or 135 or even 150 for all I care. What is important to me at the end of the day is that I can create my force within the alloted points that I have been given and have some sort of perceived balance that I can bring to the gaming table and use. What will make me happy is the ability to craft the force into what I want and use it against an opponent that is doing the same within set limits (ie points). This is also useful for scenario building but I do not want an open concept where each side just picks whatever the heck they want. Every battle would end up being 50 King Tigers (or 50 E-100s) vs 50 IS-3s. Any idea of how you would preceed with this or is it either too early to indicate or some thing you want to flesh out first before the jackels attack your ideas? (I am talking to you luderbamsen, you Danish troublemaker you )
  9. Battlefront, Great job on the roadmap. I b&%ch and complain a lot about CMSF but still think it is a great game compared to what is on offer to the dedicated wargamer that seems to occupy these boards. I have 3 questions; 1. How will the different retail versions affect the purchase of modules? I am thinking more in terms of my purchase of the Paradox game product and its compatibility with the modules. Will I have to continue to buy all my modules from Paradox if I bought the main game from them or will I be able to buy directly from you for the add on modules (and vice-versa)? 2. I may have asked this before but in my old age have forgotten the answer. How compatible will the terrain tiles (or other elements) be between games? Will the gamer that has bought both, be able to add temperate tiles to the CMSF environment? Or will the TacAI prevent the effective use of these new terrain types? It would be nice to include the more fortified positions that we will see in WW2 added to the SF games. Give the Blue force a better run for their money. 3. Will the quick battle system include some form of a point system? Apparently, it caused much debate in CMx1 and do not want to cause that type of debate in CMx2 but it would be nice if we are to have a more balanced red vs blue QB system. My T-62 vs M1A1 battles have been a little one sided.
  10. I still think Korea could be #3 as it has everything that is required for a successful game in the US (American troops) and the ominous bad guys (Chinese and N Koreans) as well as sidekicks (Brits, Canadians and Turks) Once the work is done on the men and models though, I am assumong that it will be easier to release each successive Game. If a PzIV is modeled in Game 2, that same model could be used in Game 3 etc. This would also allow for the terrain tiles (like snow, fir tees etc.) being re-used. I am only guessing but it would seem that once the WWII game wagon gets rolling, it should be easier for Charles, Steve, Rune et al, to get on a more regular and timely release schedule. (Terrain from SMSF et al., units/sides from Normandy et al and you have yourself an operation Torch in the making) This leads to things like a Korean War game (which I am only using as an example) being easier to code for as almost all the work will have been done in previous modules. Any thoughts? Though looking at these forums, I would think about keeping this close to my chest. If Game X is coming out before Game Y or Game Z, there will be someone that will complain (like me )
  11. I am going to jump into this Broo-haha and just ask for a general roadmap and a question. 1. So it looks like US vs German Normandy (main game) and then allies (Poles, Brits, Canucks) add on module (2 in this series) 2. Possibly Eastern Front (Citadel and then modules for ??? maybe Bagration or some like) 3. ??? I know I haved asked in the past but what about Korea 1950-1951? It has tanks, Americans and N Koreans (with already modeled Russian equipment) for the first game, then Allies (Brits, Ausies and Canucks) and Chinese for the additional module. I have spent some time there and the natural terrain was not that much different from what would be experienced in the Bulge campaign (fir trees, snow...) I personally would want Eastern front (1940 - 1945) Finns, USSR, Germans, Axis minors and then Italy but that will never come to pass. And with CMBB/CMAK reaching the end of its life (Vista and DX 10) I will need a fix to replace it. - What I am going to do with the 2 extra copies of CMBB and CMAK that are sitting on my shelf?? (I had 5 each at one time but have managed to convince 3 other people to start playing).
  12. I want to reiterate Swamp's question. Has anyone ever got BB or AK to work on Vista with an ATI card? (or more specifically a 38xx card)? I have been looking at upgrading and it seems that people have got both of these games to work under Vista (Rune 24 March post) but all talk has been about NVidia. Has there been any success with ATI and their newer cards? I would hate to change vendors (as I have had great luck with ATI) but if it means that I can play CMBB or CMAK for another 5 years I am more than willing to change. ---- A little off topic but would there ever be a chance that BF would release the code or transfer ownership to another group (like a cooperative or even make it open source) that would be willing to upgrade it for Vista and the future? I am not sure how much money that BF continually makes from CMx1 but if it is a dead application without any more support this could be an idea. I know that I would be more than willing to pay $10 to continue playing this for the forseeable future.------ But then if ATI or NVidia and Vista are viable to play CMx1 then this is a moot point.
  13. Thanks Rune, I have a X800GT and ATI Driver 7.12 I went through my options again and turned on ATI Compatibility and this seems to have helped. I never needed it before but I appear to need it now. I also noticed that it still slightly freezes when I create a covered arc for a weapon. The game momentarily freezes and it is hard to set the covered arc. I was able to play through the entire game though.

  16. I also am having some problems. I installed 1.08 and played ATGM Alley. I played Syrians and tried to target the Strykers with my ATGMs. The problem was that whenever I got the cursor near the US vehicles, the cursor would freeze (about 1cm away from the vehicle) and the game screen would freeze (sometimes without any trees) and then attempt to re-draw itself. Very frustrating as I have always used this one as a testing scenario and it has always worked. I lost this game as I could not target any American troops. Maybe I accidentally downloaded the American Uber-man patch by mistake.

  19. Thanks for the info. I tried to get a copy of PBEMHelper but it said that the website was no longer valid. Do both of you then have to use it for it to work? I also have found remnants of games I think I have played with these guys but cannot for the life of me remember playing it. Just a file name and no way of looking at it. Probably from 3-4 years ago. I have really begun to enjoy this game in the last 2-3 years. PBEM is a life saver especially when I have a job, wife, kids and not much more than an hour per week to relax with Combat Mission. Thanks for the feedback on the website. It was actually started by Robin (whom I think is the one poking his head out of the turret). Google Page Creator is OK but I have had a lot of problems with different browsers and was thinking that if I really want to pursue this, I should buy a commercial product wth more flexability.
  20. I am trying to create a site of all the games that myself and 3 friends have played over the last 3 years. The problem is that I have some old saved end-of-game files and cannot get into them as I have forgotten the password and it has been 2 years since I played this games. Not that I expect this but is there any way to see which password I had entered? I use a veriety of passwords to sometimes pass games in progress to the non-playing guy so he can see what we have been talking about. If not, c'est le vie, but I would hate to forget the end-of-game points after having played this game for 4 months. the masterful work in progress is located at http://cmbb.cmak.googlepages.com/home and the game I am really wanting to crack is "Royal Opponant". Do not be too harsh a judge as I have just been fooling around with Google Page Creator and this is what 5 hours gets you.
  21. Is there a possibility of a Korean War module. It has everything that we could want. 1. American troops/vehicles (already released in some fashion in the WWII Normandy module) 2. North Koreans already partially modeled (T-34/85 etc) 3. Possibility of add on modules (1 module UN Forces and 1 module Chinese force) 4. Depending upon expansions but some ofthe terrain from a buldge expansion pack would be suitable for Korea. What more could be easier to make and market (especially when we are told time and again that you need an American connection to make high volume sales)?
  22. I agree. It would be a very different response depending upon the Syrian. LoneSyrian was a little bit touchy (I am trying to be polite) but talking to a Captain (or higher) in the Syrian army might give us some useful insight. I would agree though that sitting in my comfy chair with my limited emotional involvement does not give me the insight that living there would day to day.
  23. If you asked your joe-blow on the street, maybe. You are not dealing with your average person though here on this forum. I think most of us here (if you want to do a statistical analysis) have very different views than your average man you would find in your streets. Without getting too far off topic, I see the world not as black and white but in shades of grey. I fully support the conflict in Afghanistan but find it utterly foolish that Iraq was invaded on absolutely no solid pretext and that this has been the most destabilizing force in the world for the last 40 years. The Assad regime in Syria may be bad but in CMx2 we (the Western world) seem to want to prop it up against Islamic fundamentalists. Is this not the exact opposite of what happened in Iraq? There the USA overthrew a strongman and in the process helped the Iraqi insurgents as well as strengthened Islamic fundamentalism and made it a viable philosophy in the Middle East. Does that make the USA in Iraq black and in CMx2 white? Or vice-versa. Perhaps just differing shades of grey. This means that we should also want to find out about how other people see the conflicts. There shades of grey would be different than yours. Though probably just as confused but defintely not predictable.
  24. I do not think that it was a bad question. I would love to hear from a syrian player. I know that the Lone Syrian was a bit over the top at times but at least we get a different perspective. It's like asking a question about the Iraqi war and only wanting opinions from the Americans. No one side holds the truth. I would love to see how Syrians view the scenarios and the game. Maybe it is the wine talking but JohnO needs to relax. For a country that holds the 1st amendment to be self-evident what is wrong with seeing it from the other side.
  25. With the new $1.07CDN exchange rate, eBay has never looked better. Travelling outside of Canada also looks great but it must come as a shock to most Americans who have lived for the last 25 years with a strong American $. I used to move to New York during the Summer to work and pay for my university tuition as I would make a load of money. Now I will have to put up with New Yorkers moving to Saskatoon.
