  1. An embarasingly newbie question: I want to down load some mods - I have the euro version of the game and want to download the stuff that changes the WG into the SS, as well as the new flagsets etc. I may want do d/l some uniforms and/or vehicles in the future too. My question is, once I have d/l'd the files, what do I have to do to get them running in the game? Does the game update itself or do I have to manually insert the new files into specific parts of the game folders? I have never downloaded any game mods before so any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Scott
  2. CMBO Sherbrooke Fusiliers - I sort of buggered things up when my tank reinforcements arrived. Thought I was up against a handful of PzIV's and a couple of assault guns when suddenly a "PzIV?" becomes a "Panther G". Downhill from there, but I had an MG squad firing on the advancing SS troops from the top floor of a heavy building while my surviving units in the village withdrew into cover. The crazy loons stayed at their post until the building was overrun by SS. No survivors, natch. Manneheim-We Start Here! - A standoff battle resulted in plenty of casualties on both sides, but I saw one of my squads charge an 88 while under fire from an MG pillbox until they got into grenade range and took out the crew. The only cover fire they had was pretty innefective small-arms from a couple hundred metres away.
  3. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA FACKIN' BEEYOOOOTIE! All fixed! (No more swearies from now on, honest guv!)
  4. And just to prove how bloody cruel life is, after all the fuss about not being able to CM on holiday, I get home yesterday, eager for a CM fix only to find that in my absence my sister has been messing around with my computer and has utterly killed it. No sign of life at all. And guess who spent all his dosh on holiday - no repairs until payday! I'm having to post this from an internet cafe! Keep an eye on bbc.co.uk/news for a breaking story about "Man kills sister in slow, painful manner!"
  5. This could be referring to bunkers such as those found on, for example, the Maginot Line - not dinky little concrete match-boxes with a single MG, but mini-forts in their own right. These things were made of reinforced concrete, and chock full of weaponry, and in any case, a ferro-concrete pillbox would be ideally several inches thick otherwise you might as well use wood and save a wad of money. Anybody who grew up reading Warlord will know that "Union Jack Jackson" could kill a Jap pillbox with a single well thrown grenade, but generally I think the more stuff you could throw at one, the better. Remember also that U-Boat bases were given ferro-concrete roofs (admittedly feet as opposed to inches thick) which were unbreakable until the RAF developed the 22,000lb (no that´s not a typo, it really weighed 22 thousand pounds!) "Grand Slam" bomb, but even a foot or so should cause major headaches for all but the heaviest tank guns. I think it´s fair to say that for gameplay´s sake, the strength of ferro-concrete has been toned down in CM!
  6. Have to admit that until stumbling across CM, I never had much interest in the land war - airborne and naval have always been more my fields of interest. Maybe time I read up on it some, huh?
  7. D'oh! lol nor am I really, but I saw a documentary on the History channel about these guys recently! Although why he couldn't just say RM commandos... I'll just get my coat....
  8. I am a bit of a newcomer to PC wargames (well, wargames in general), and yes, I admit I found my way to the gènre via *whispers* that OTHER game , but am now keen to expand to different types of wargame. SC certainly appeals to me, but one of the most enjoyable aspects of my new found hobby has been multiplayer (PBEM mostly - kinda defeats the purpose of the game when you only have a minute to decide all your moves, no?). What I want to know is, how large is the PBEM community for this game? Any future wargame purchases I make, this will be a major factor as I can´t get enough of playing (read - getting whupped! Dammit I´m a rookie!) against human opponents. Thanks in advance
  9. Michael - a bit more digging unearthed this: British SS Friekorps They were the only British SS unit I am aware of, hope this helps! Also try www.raf.mod.uk for info on RAF operations, in any campaign. [ October 19, 2004, 06:24 PM: Message edited by: Tifosi ]
  10. Try the "Newbies" threads in CMBO, CMBB and CMAK forums - chock full of linked thread goodness! They state "Newbies read this" but are actually full of all sorts of useful stuff for newbies and grogs alike.
  11. I can help you with the British SS Brigade - they never saw combat. It was decided by someone in Berlin that, fascists or not, a British SS brigade would be too politically unreliable. All memebers survived the war and were executed by His Majesties government for treason.
  12. And it is made by battlefront.com Product page at amazon Hm, the screenshots leave few doubt that combat ranges are severely compressed for the sake of gameplay. </font>
  13. Actually, I picked up the full game (English language) from a shop in Benidorm for 15 Euros (about ten pounds). Only had a quick go, but it's so far a) not as fast and hectic as other RTS (i.e command and conquer), so you do get a bit of time to react (and theres a pause button anyway!) harder than a very hard thing in a concrete waistcoat! If this time period interests, and you don't mind too much about it being RTS as opposed to turn based, then it´s worth a look. And aircraft are player controllable too. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but when you have used your commandos to knock out some AAA, then descend on an enemy with fighter bombers, attack helos and then assault helos loaded with assault troops, it does tend to induce a big grin The engineers are a bit handier too, they can build bailey bridges, and operate captured enemy radars and supply dumps etc. You can also turn an enemies MG´s and arty on him if you can capture the guns intact! Top stuff. Truly combined arms!
  14. Just came accross a game called Cold War Conflicts:Days in the Field - its an RTS as opposed to click and go, but its set in the korean war and a 1970's war between Egypt and Israel. It is however, built on the same principals as CM, e.g its not a base-builder and the abilities etc of various units are painstakingly modelled. Apart from the the fact it´s in realtime, it seems I have actually found what I´m looking for! It is not in the same league as CM in terms of depth of play or size, but is still worth a look if anyone else is interested in this time period. http://www.cwc-game.com/main.shtml
  15. Nothing to add here - just an apolgy! I didn't realise someone else had already used THAT quote in their sig! lol
  16. Here in the UK we have a vidoegame show called Gamezville, which goes out on Sky One/Sky One Mix daily (twice daily during school holidays). Now, before anyone who has seen it starts howling with derision, I read in one of the papers that almost a million people watch it. I caught a repeat (on Mix, I think) whose exact age I am unsure of, but it can´t have been more than about 6 months. Anyhow´s, the show´s theme for the day was war games, mostly twitch & blast stuff, but then up popped a feature on CM:Anthologies. The shows resident strategy expert (Simon something or other, a guy who actually seems to know his stuff) went on to recommend CM as one of the all time greats, and recommended everybody looking for something a bit different give it a go. Although 80% of the shows audience are under 18, it can surely only be a good thing if CM, and indeed all such "niche" games start getting such mainstream media attention?
  17. Hmmm. No offense but this is why you have to be really careful what you're reading here. Russian TH teams begin to receive RPGs in June '43. The RPG is likely the most effective TH weapon in the game. I'm not going to post some long thing about Tank Hunters again aside from that note. There are a lot of great posts on this if you run a search. </font>
  18. TH teams, I have found, are at their best in urban scenarios. Hide them in an upper floor (try avoiding buildings the enemy is likely to want as an MG nest or sniper nest though), lie low while any infantry moves past and as the armour rattles by, WHAM! Also find it useful to have them lurking near forest edges, in particular where armour really has to skirt the forest. If defending, just behind the crest of a hill can be a good 'un, if you can protect them from enemy infantry with your own grunts. Then you can catch armour unawares as it crests the hill. This method is really only suitable when LOS conditions allow a lot of cover to your team, not possible on many maps. As for open terrain, I generally try and find somewhere near the rear to try and hit any pushes by the enemy towards my rear. Trying to get them across open country can be way hard if the enemy is engaged. MG's will have them for breakfast. I guess the point of this rambling is that I find TH teams are best used to ambush enemy armour. However, as always there is no "correct" way to use them, and you will find different people have different ways of using the assets available to them. Scott P.S - Forget the Russian TH teams, they just lob little bottles that are so useless, one wonders if Ivan drank the contents before throwing...
  19. The weight of our U.S built tanks was limited by what an average dockside crane could lift. British tanks were built bearing in mind that we couldn't afford to waste a single ton of steel for most of the war, and this meant thinner armour than would have been ideal.
  20. I rmember reading somewhere that the ´cutter was something that crews had to come up with themeselves. It was created by a tanker after seeing a half dozen sherms wasted while trying to plough through hedgerows in France. North Africa was pretty much over by the time it was made (late ´44), but I don´t actually know if it was used in Italy at all. Not as many centuries-old lumps of hedge there though as in NW Europe.
  21. rotflmao! Thanks, will do. [EDIT] - Just had a look at the site *drools* can't wait to get that lot downloaded when I get home. Thank goodness my shiny new broadband kit will be waiting for me when I get home, eh? [ October 14, 2004, 05:39 PM: Message edited by: Tifosi ]
  22. I have the Euro version of all 3 CM games purchased as CM:Anthologies. Loving them, but I am a bit of a nerd for historical accuracy, however due to German censorship laws, no SS units appear in the game. Someone told me the proper SS units were in the US release, and could be downloaded. Can't remember who it was though - sorry, mystery helper! Could someone please tell me where to find these and how to install them onto the game? Also, should I bother downloading any patches or should these versions of the game be OK? Thanks in advance, folks.
