  1. So, how do you get around the fact that there are huge chunks of information that hasn't been declassified? </font>
  2. Actually, no I haven´t! I´m still getting my teeth round CM after a long break from PC wargaming, and if I start on anything else as well just now, I might find myself sans wife!
  3. I just re-played Chance Encounter, and used mortar smoke to cover my advance into woods and blind the enemy. Last time I played this scenario I got wasted quick-smart. This time I waxed 'em all. Major victory with 12 turns remaining, all but 20 or so Germans killed or captured. The moral of the story? START SMOKING, KIDS!
  4. See "Grounds for Divorce?" elsewhere in this forum!
  5. Lol sorry, letting 21st century politics cloud my perspective on history again! [EDIT] Didn´t mean to get all bolshi about it, but on re-reading it seems I did a tad didn´t I? I was just trying to condense into a few lines what was covered over oodles of posts in other threads without going on and on and on and on.... CM Korea is still one of the better bets for a real world setting post WWII though. And I still say it has to have M*A*S*H units! I´ll give 'em a whirl when I get home from my holidays!
  6. All true, but then how many people enjoyed the fictional scenarios for the first 3 games? I am the first to admit that my knowledge of military history focuses more on specific battles and on the technological side as opposed to OOB´s and suchlike, but my main point that WWII has been done to death between the retail games and the modders, so why not do something a little different. Given that using any other post-WWII conflict would require a little "creativity" in making the game balanced (again, see other threads....hang on, you probably have already, eh? ) then why not go the whole hog and create a war? By "real units" I actually meant the compositions of a fighting unit (e.g tanks, infantry companies armed with a "typical" loadout for their task (recce, tank support, AT etc), not the actual OOB. It wouldn´t be to hard to put a pretty (theoretically) realistic OOB together though, if you worked on the assumption that any East v West war would be the end result of political tensions, as opposed to a totally surprise attack, thereby giving the West time to fully deploy? As for nukes, there can be any number of reasons for not using them. If the reds were after resources (north sea oil) they wouldnt want to nuke all the logistic centres, would they? Besides, it would be nice to think nobody would be daft enough to in the face of MAD, unless all was lost!
  7. I see so many people all wanting so many things from CM2 in terms of what war we should set it in, but nobody seems to have asked "What if we make one up?" For example what about a cold war stylee thing, WarPac vs. Nato in Europe say, late 70´s or early 80´s. I know CM is all about authenticity, but I am talking about using real units, weapons, troop types etc in a fictional conflict. Most actual wars post-WWII are either unsuitable or were simply too one-sided, whereas West vs East would IMHO make for a helluva game. Cue 1,000 CM purists lining me up in their sights.... [EDIT] Bugger, posted to wrong forum (Almost asleep at the wheel here)! Any chance of moving this one guys?
  8. Only if it had M*A*S*H units in it! Seriously though - they´ve pretty much run out of WWII stuff. As covered elsewhere already, the Pacific campaign wouldn´t really work for CM (infantry, infantry, infantry, attack, defend, attack, defend etc with sod all armour for the most part) and early WWII (the low countries falling, france doing its usual roll-over-and-die routine, norway etc) wouldn´t really work as it was all a tad one sided. Korea could be quite good, but bear in mind it would be largely WWII era weapons as the biggest advances between 1945-50 were in aviation, in military terms, and air units are AI controlled (and don´t change it, guys!). Maybe a "what-if" style game set in a cold-war era europe would be good! WarPac vs Nato kind of thing....hmmm, I fell a new thread coming on
  9. Tanks - apologies, man! I posted a thread a few days back called Tanks a Lot. I didn´t realise there was someone with that user ID on the site! Don´t worry it was nothing bad though!
  10. Thanks guys. Now I´m afraid to go to sleep for fear of what I find myself glued to (and where it´s glued to) when I wake up!
  11. Talk about being on thin ice...as if I wasn´t hanging from a shaky nail already for wanting to CM on holiday, my two and a half year old son has just informed his mummy that "I wanna see Daddy´s tanks onna 'pooter"! I swear I´m not making this up! Frankly, I´m wondering just how many pieces I will be able to find after the PC gets turfed out a 24th story window
  12. As a CM newcomer I couldn´t agree more with this. Especially all the patient folks who don´t mind playing PBEM games with somebody who is relatively inexperienced in the gènre and far from being a tactical genius!
  13. Formations might not be a bad idea IMHO. At the moment all selected units cover the same distance, so in theory should all complete their move in same positions relative to one another. Being able to use formations (single file, line abreast, V etc would be a lot less hassle than having to individually assign each unti in a company a seperate finishing point. Shouldnt be too hard for AI to sort out, I mean things like making sure your mortar squad isn´t on point are just common sense aren´t they?
  14. Did you know you can buy PC mice that are half the usual size for the kiddies? Just a suggestion....
  15. Aaaaah, blessed relief! OK, you only get 2 scenarios in the demo, but fortunately one I haven´t played yet! And two more demos to get through afterwards
  16. Already done, but one PC between two people doesn´t go! Maybe I should get her a playstation 2 or something. You can get the sims for that now I think...
  17. Still, she reckons that if I´m that desperate to play then Im going to find a way some how. I quote "as long as it doesn´t take over our holiday". Yes, dear.
  18. Hitler´s intention was not to conquer the whole of russia, but rather to take the western part (as far as the caucus mountains east of Moscow) and deport all the native peoples east. He was a mad liitle bugger, but even he knew there had to be limits somewhere. And yes, if he hadn´t declared war on America after Pearl Harbour (done in the hope that Japan would reciprocate in kind and got to war with their traditional enemy, Russia) then it´s possible that Germany could have won. Without the USN escorts and the "Liberty Ships", then statistically, the U-boats would have starved us within a few weeks at the rate they were sinking ships in late ´41 to early ´42. Without the 8th USAAF, we could not have kept up round the clock bombing of industrial and military targets. The RAF didn´t have enough bombers, and they were all designed specifically for night ops. As to the north africa question - that´s trickier. Yes, we controlled the Med via our base at Malta, but bear in mind that at one point our total air power on the island consisted of three Gloster Gladiator biplanes (nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity) pitted against a force not much smaller than we faced in the Battle of Britain. It was largley due to Italian failures that the axis was run out of North Africa as quickly as they were. I know these answers are pretty generalised, but I hope they are of some help to you.
  19. Why don't you burn yourself a backup copy? I did this for all the games I really like and may play on my laptop so I don't damage the originals. Make sure you label the disks something like "History of WWII Vol I" and "... Vol II" so your wife won't want to look at them. </font>
  20. Eureka! If I download the free demo, that might just be enough to whet my cravings. Okay so after playing the full games over the net this is probably equal to smoking a crumpled dog end from the ashtray when your choking for a ciggie, but it´s gotta be better than nowt! Wonder how long it´ll take her to realise if I keep the volume turned down.....
  21. They even had a British SS unit. On paper it was a division, but never actually numbered more than a couple of hundred men, and was never actually used. It was comprised of PoW´s who were suspected of having Fascist tendencies and who would be sounded out by German agents posing as fellow PoW´s inserted to the camps by the SS. They wore a tiny Union Jack below their SS "lightning strikes" but other than that wore the standard SS garb. I´ll be buggered if I can remember the name of the unit - I´ll try and remember to look it up at some point! Most known memebers were hung after the war ended at Nuremburg or after repatriation to Blighty.
  22. Okay, 2 months ago I got my shiny new PC. About 6 weeks ago, I buy CM:Anthologies as an impulse buy. The bugger doesn´t work  ! I was just getting a blank screen with the mouse pointer showing when I loaded the game. After two weeks or so I discover by accident that Alt+Tabbing to windows then back (kinda) sorts the problem. It then takes about 3 hours to work out that I am more addicted to CM than I am to nicotine! About a week and a half ago, I finally get the interweb thingy hooked up, and visit this site to see what yer are all about. Within hours I have got 3 PBEM games on the go. So far so good. But now I am on holiday and the wifey has banned me from bringing my CM disks with me! No CM until the 22nd of October! Grounds for divorce, or do I need professional help?
  23. Sorry...couldn't resist! As a newcomer to all things CM I just want to express my gratitude to the guys (and girls?) behind the CM games. I have had them but a few weeks and am already more addicted to CM than I am to ciggies! Having spent the last few years piddling around with consoles, I have rediscovered what makes PC gaming so great - depth of gameplay and online support that no console (so-called) strategy game could EVER hope to achieve. Gentlemen - I salute you!
  24. I have noticed that rapid loss of tanks seems to occur more often when playing as the allies. I am still quite new to the CM games, but if they are as realistic as they claim to be this is not a surprise. German tank design was far ahead of our own - when the Germans captured a Churchill after the Dieppe fiasco they actually thought they had a captured an obsolete machine of a mid 1920's vintage! They also refered to the Sherman as "the Tommy Cooker" because of it's tendency to burst into flames when hit. You might have to do what field commanders at the time had to do - rely on superior numbers to swamp the enemy tanks! German AT guns were generally superb too, and seem to be best dealt with by mortar fire.
