  1. First thing I always do with any new computer that may have Norton installed is trash bin Norton and also any easy access IE icons. Firefox with Ad Blocker, Avast Anti-Virus (free version)... virus free for years and no problems installing programs. This is on two cpu's (Workstation and laptop) with Win7 and one older desktop with WinXP sp3 as OS's. I have never liked anything Norton.

    Just my two cents.

  2. Probably not realistic to have troops improve in a matter of a day or two. But, time in a CM campaign can be very elastic.

A designer could easily suppose that battles were weeks or longer apart. In terms of gameplay it would be fun to have troops change quality in later battles. Experience could get worse if you lose too many men, or better if you won with few casualties.

Did anyone else enjoy games like the SILENT HUNTER series, where the player had the opportunity to promote his men and award medals?

Yes I did, from what I remember of it.

Steel Panthers WaW (free download) series is great for gaining experience and keeping track of kills / units. Loved that game, still do, just do not get around to using it much since CMx1 and CMx2 take up most of my wargame time. It totally reminded me of TOBRUK by Avalon Hill, except for the computer handling all tasks that I deplored doing when playing board games.

Now 'Critical Hit' makes an updated version called ADVANCED TOBRUK 4th edition. For those interested and might not know about this company:

I may have to pick this up for the bookshelf, just for nostalgia / reading purposes. :D

  3. I know that there are a section of players who just prefer to play against the AI. Have you considered using this format but with a group playing a team game against the AI where you handle the operational side of things for everyone along with the enemy's movements but letting each player command say their own company? Basically it would sort of be a game of continuous scenarios/quick-battles but players would keep their command for the duration and follow it through the campaign? I did this many times before over the years using Steel Panthers and players seemed to enjoy the small custom battles while leading their men through what essentially becomes a custom designed operation.

That sounds like a good idea.

Ahhhh Steel Panthers, I really enjoyed that game. SPWaW was / is terrific. The Meta campaigns are a blast. I fire SPWaW up every once in a while just for nostalgia purposes, SPMBTwin as well. Quality games especially for being free now.

  4. Every once one in awhile, after reading a flurry of board complaints about CMx2 not being an exactly duplicate of CMx1 I dust off an old copy of CMBB or CMAK and fire it up. Ooooooh... after a few minutes of trying to maneuver the darned camera around a map that vaguely resembles a South Park cartoon I give up and close it down.

Says the beta tester that probably gets free copy's... no bias there what-so-ever... :D

Seriously, to each their own. I enjoy CMx1 and will for some time, no matter how much sburke and others dis it, I don't give a rats ass. ;)

Having said that, firing up CMFI right now for some CMx2 action.

    :)

  5. Wait a minute, you mean to tell me there was a CM version before CMSF? :D

    heh heh

Actually I keep my old discs as cool places to set my beer glass while playing Cmx2 games. I have no idea why anyone would still play the old ones over the new, but then again I have no idea why people watch reality tv either.

Because lucky me I didn't burn myself out using those games over the years. I still have hundreds of scenarios / ops and the RobO's quick campaign generator to keep CMAK (CMETO) and CMBB spinning. I like very large battles and ops as well, CMx1 is great for that as Erwin has been mentioning in other threads.

I do like the CMx2 engine though, just not my favorite theatre... Normandy. Digging Italy though. Hopefully there will be a North Africa version down the road. Really looking forward to the Russian front as well.
