  1. In CMAK and CMBB I saw some mods, which really just appeared to be replacement BMP files (I didn't look too close). Is there any capability in CMx2 for mods with a little more functionality than scenario and BMP file replacements? For instance, X-Plane 9 (among so many others) has a complete API for 3rd party developers.
  2. One of the things that's really popular these days is achievements/careers. For instance, in World of Tanks, there's a series of tanks we can progress through. It would be cool (at least for me) if there was some sort of career/achievement component to CMBN.
  3. The amount of traffic in this forum seems almost like a sideshow and that Normandy/WWII has really struck a chord with BF customers. One can only hope that Battlefront takes notice and continues to explore WWII with this engine . I would definitely buy more Combat Mission for WWII and would love to see MOD's for the new engine that go beyond basic BMP and Scenario files. The X-Plane flight simulator, for instance (which is developed by a very small company), provides 3rd party developers an API so that they can develop all sorts of additional functionality.
  4. From what I've seen, the Intel 3000 is about as low as you want to go for a graphics adapter in your laptop. It's a bit slower than the Nvidia 9600M GS in my 3 year old laptop. Personally, I wouldn't trust an Intel graphics adapter to play games with.
  5. It would be nice to see a number of theaters based on the BN platform. In 'Advanced Squad Leader' terms, there's always the core modules: - Beyond Valor - Yanks - Partisan! - West of Alamein - For King and Country - The Last Hurrah - Hollow Legions - Code of Bushido - Gung Ho! - Croix de Guerre - Doomed Batalions - Armies of Oblivion' - Hakkaa Päälle (not yet released) and then everything else . .
  6. MSI and ASUS make very good notebooks for gaming. Although many notebooks are capable of supporting 1920x1080 externally, their built in display is only 1366x768 (which is adequate, but no thrill). My son's MSI GX640 has a built in 15.4" - 1680x1050 display on a Radeon 5850. Very sweet and can play Crysis. And that's a year old model . . . Myself, I have an ASUS M50VM-A1, which I hope will be up to the task. Do your research and make sure that the CPU frequency is as fast as you can get. CMBN doesn't support multiple cores.
  7. My first boardgame was Avalon Hill's Blitzkrieg: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/4168/blitzkrieg Wasn't out all that long when I got it.
  8. I purrchased a turn based game for my Android called Uniwar, which cost a couple of bucks. For multi-player, this game has: - A game matching system where players start up games which you can join - A win/lose points ladder - A general chat area (ugh) as well as an in game chat area - You can limit the maximum time allowed per turn (i.e. take a few minutes to a day or more to make your turn) - Works via wi-fi - You can play multiple games simultaneously - Also has a solo mode What I like about it is there's: - No tcp address/ports/firewall to fiddle with - No email or huge file attachments to fiddle with - Direct game matching - Lots of ready made opponents/games - You can search/sort for the level/kind of game you'd like to join The multi-player is just plain easy to use. Unfortunately for me, I got whacked.
  9. I tried the demo of CMBO in 2003, and it didn't work on my Athlon 1.4Ghz system with an Nvidia card, so I gave up (for several years). Bought CMBB/CMAK last week and pre-ordered CMBN for my laptop (with 2.26G dual core and GeForce 9600M).
  10. In lieu of an in game matchmaking system, I thought I'd try the Battlefront Forums to see if I can find an opponent. Have tried the opponent finder over at 'The Proving Grounds', but no luck yet. Let's see: - I'm a conscript and would prefer a non-veteran - CMAK or CMBB (latest version) - PBEM (could do live) - I'm GMT-8 - Small games preferably - I'll take any side Feel free to PM or email me.
  11. I for one would have sacrificed some of the technical functionality in order to improve multi-player matchup mechanism. In the meantime, I'll be looking around 'old school' style to get some matches in CMBB/CMAK and soon . . . CMBN. I've already got some links (such as the Scenario Depot), and have made a couple of postings. PS, I'm open for a match in CMBB/CMAK (latest version which I just bought from BF). That would be: PBEM Optionally live 7PM+ Vancouver time I'm a conscript Small battles Any side
  12. Most multi-player games these days have a lobby in which you can create matches. VASSAL being the most notable for turn based games. After reading the 'just uploaded' online manual, it appears that this is not a component of CM:BN. As excited as I am about getting this game, it's disappointing not see this very well established method of game matchup incorporated. Hamachi works, but a lobby is what I would expect in 2009+.
  13. Then I tried the TOW3 demo on a desktop with a 6850 Core2 Duo, 4G of RAM, 9600GS video adapter running on Windows XP with Microsoft Security Essentials. The demo crashed, despite clean reboots, etc. On the other hand, the recently released World of Tanks runs like a charm. You can change the window size and everything. I'm getting concerned for what's going to happen when I receive Normandy, but then I've seen this stuff with Battlefront games before. Sigh. At least I'm now enjoying CMBB and CMAK (which I bought the other day).
  14. Had to reset the video settings from the main menu and restart as the cursor didn't line up properly. Took me down to 57 minutes. Then started the game. . . Loooong load time (4G RAM and 7200RPM drive). Finally, got into the game, looked around the (beautiful looking) map for about 2-3 minutes. Exited. 50 minutes left in the demo. Guess I won't have too many kicks at this cat before it times out. At least with the CMAK demo you've got all the time you want with the one or two scenarios provided. Being over 50, I need that extra time for my brain to comprehend what's going on. I doubt that I'll have time to learn the interface or do a hell of a lot before it times out on me. Oh well, I DID order up Normandy sight unseen.
  15. Well, I finally bought the CMAK/CMBB bundle as the Vista compatible demos worked on my ASUS M50VM-A1 Win7 laptop. I've also pre-ordered Normandy as well (hoping for the best). I guess you can consider this issue resolved.
  16. but had technical problems with the BF game I'd purchased and eventually gave up on it. I ended up buying several Advanced Squad Leader modules instead and have had a lot of fun with that, along with VASSAL/VASL. I'll give Battlefront one last go with Normandy.
  17. Well, I'm hoping the game's going to be damn good (as I pre-ordered it). That AAR with all the pictures was absolutely amazing, and sold me. On the other hand, the Youtube video of the rotating image of the 'can' was a joke. This E-License sounds like BS, but I'll put up with it if the game is excellent. It's yet another exception that I have to document and manage for when I go and re-format my drive, which I do at least once or twice/year (and I do use VM's a lot). Harpoon2 had something similar several years back, and I eventually gave up on it. Waste of time and energy. Why not use steampowered as a distribution method?
  18. Exactly! It's 2011, not 2001. Anything less than a lobby would be the latter.
  19. I'm interested in ordering up Combat Mission Normandy and playing live with a buddy over the Internet. I'm wondering if I have to configure my router for port forwarding, or does BF have a facility to allow us to connect without all the mumbo jumbo? Oh, and I've done far too much port forwarding and firewall configuration in my day and am getting tired of it, especially with games.
  20. I'll try setting my Geforce 2 GTS/Pro to 16 bits with a reasonable refresh rate and see what happens. Alt Tabs, waiting for 20 minutes, patches, various drivers, etc do not seem to work with the black screen I've been having with Combat Mission these past months. It never did work for me with W2K or WXP on the same hardware. It does work with the ATI 7000 I have at work though. Oh well, at least VASL works.
  21. I think I'll try REAL Leadtek drivers when I get home tonight and not generic NVidia ones. The current one from them is 43.51. Update: These don't work either. I think it's time for me to give up and look elsewhere. Onto www.vasl.org. Thanks for your help folks!!! [ October 30, 2003, 03:28 PM: Message edited by: Johnny Canuck ]
