  1. Is this like when Rambo gets burned out, and then states he is through, and then the next day he is back in there swinging hehe. I suppose there are a few out there itching to get into SC2. My question of course is , how many will be even up to playing SC once SC2 is released? I for one don't normally cut adrift a good proven game without some decent justification. Won't want to be turfing any of thelate comers to SC just because we are playing the "new thing" when it arrives.
  2. To be honest the term has not been encountered by me before My best guess is it might refer to the section of map on Belgian border. That is just a logic guess though and might not even be close. I often find that a successful attack needs to hit LC quick and painless and then move into France via LC, otherwise it gets "messy".
  3. You guys might like this thread. Its very useful to new players. http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=003464 PLus check out the Strategy guide at this link http://ww2n.com/schq/
  4. I have turned to another direction. Lets campaign for the people that made HTTR, to produce a Civil War game using that design. I could care less what Paradox makes, and frankly, I don't even care if they ever figure out how to market good wargames. I tend to distance myself from people that don't earn my respect let alone my money. Or we can campaign for Battlefront to make a Napoleonic version of Combat Mission. At least the people that made those games know what makes a good wargame a good wargame eh.
  5. Much of the game is lucky dice rolls (ok you don't see any dice rolling, but it happens all the same). I can turf Poland turn one, but it takes luck, there is no specific must do to make such and such automatically happen sequence (I think). Hitting Denmark likely only requires you give your navy practive training by shelling the city. Hitting LC might be only so Allies can't use the LC Gambit themselves on turn two. Thus, actually getting somewhere on first attack might not be the point. Normally a good armour infantry air supported attack will kill the LC in one move. Al you need to do is take the city after all. There is likely a lot of fancy schmancy buying and selling happening in this whole proceedure you are curious about as well. Rambo plays some failure high risk ploys in his game
  6. Of course, every would also have to realise, a gentlemens agreement is only good when playing one. None of this would in any way prevent a swine from cheating.
  7. I remind everyone, it was HCs first game, and look how good he did on his first game. He could have sold us something broken busted buggy flawed idoitic like HoI. Ok so the game's Tech can get out of hand. That's the reality of open ended games. Get over it move past it. If you were playing SC the board game, the German would have a finite number of counters period, and this would not be an issue. But it's a computer game. Unfortunately things like this are impossible to predict, because it is only possible to find them after spastic levels of hours worth of game play. So the logical solution, gentlemens agreements on force pool limits. Gentlemens agreements on dollar limits on tech. For our A3R veterans, recall how you can only spend a specified portion of budget on Strategic Warfare. All we need is a spending cap on tech (total tech spending) per specified span of time. This would actually be a great writing project for our SC Strategy guide author (hint hint). The unathourised (yet universally accepted) gentlemens SC guidlines manual of accepted and not accepted play styles and options limitations. Heck if we all had a universally accepted guidebook we could download and adhere to, everyone would know the game's more vexing wide open opportunities were tamed. Because "tech" isn't a bug, it's just an unruly beast. HC might be able to design some limiters into SC2, but don't you think for one second the more aggressive (read they will play it day and night because they don't have a wife or kids to fuss over) won't find oversights or examples of play balance imbalances. I only want SC to be stable software. I don't require it to be fair in all things.
  8. Saying "a game is just the same as an earlier game" is an easy statement to make, and usually requires clarification. Heroes of Might and Magic 1 through 4 was basically the "same game". But each time, they tried to ramp up the graphics set and add minor tweaks. I played all 4 and liked all 4 and still have all 4, because you can actually go back and still enjoy the earlier games. But the fact remains, they were all basically the same game. Steel Panthers and Steel Panthers 2 Modern Battles and Steel Panthers 3 Brigade Combat were all basically the same game (for purposes of argument). You had to get SP2 to play modern battles maybe, but it was still the same game (essentially). All three Combat Missions are basically the same game. This list can go on. Making extensions of games is nothing new. But it always helps when all the releases were stable usable workable playable releases on the day they were released. Or at least with only a very few wake up gltches easily solved. If you have to wait a year to actually finally be able to install a game just to play it at all, then it ain't in the same category as games I like to pay good money for. Those that think Paradox's releases are "not the same game" are likely just being defensive because some of the titles have a LOT of baggage to hide from. And their titles suffer a lot of guilt by association burden.
  9. Other option, find friend with credit card, say hey I want this game, it will cost this much , here is the money, can I use your card. A lot of people won't mind. I have done this before.
  10. It's a flag image. As long as I know who is german and who isn't, I guess I could care less. I want my German formations modelled with correct stats, but again, I reeeeeeally don't care if the units names are anal accurate. I mean, there has to be a limit guys. And wanting a swastika flag instead of an iron cross flag, has to be one of the greatest energy waster arguments out there hehe. So lets get back to arguing about something useful. Like hexes vs squares hehe.
  11. If HC makes it capable of being a 6 player hotseat game as well, I will likely buy more than one copy just to drag friends into the game Ok reality check, I would never have that sort of cash. But I will sure nag them to buy it something fierce heheh My biggest beef is almost always, want to play a game, but I have 3 friends visiting, and we can't play nearly every good wargame ever made.
  12. Obnoxious post deleted. When I get scolded by Kuni, I have gone to far. [ May 07, 2004, 01:20 PM: Message edited by: Les the Sarge 9-1 ]
  13. EU might have been an ok (I don't know, and frankly don't care). EU2 might have been better. Likely was better. Still don't care. But Glez hit the nail riiiiiiight on the head. It is bad enough when someone makes a decent game, and then everyone and their uncle copies it to death instead of creating their own &%$^#@%$# wargame. But Paradox, and whomever is inherently directly responsible for actually crafting their games, is apparently cutting out the middleman and just copying to death their own game themselves. If EU2 was ok, fine, leave it at that. But isn't it time they demonstrated they know how to do something other than make money? How about demonstrating they can do something other than make the same game in several different graphics sets.
  14. Well actually HTTR is not teeeeeeechnically a turn using game. But it has a pause function, and any game that can be halted, is at least managable in some manner. It has 3 speed settings, which means you can modify how fast the game resolves the action. Similar to SC though? hmmm I assume that implies simple, and or grand strategy. Which makes it hard to offer some choices, as they tend to be something other than "simple". Most games have two problems when considering them. They are either operational designs, or they are off the market and thus it is a matter of ya gotta find them to get them. Few are actually ON SALE NOW. HPS is probably the best place to look if you want something you can actually buy new. [link deleted by admin] And John Tiller is a wargamers wargame designer too. If you want a great game to sink your teeth into, try getting yourself a copy of Operational Art of War Century of Warfare. Supplies are often erratic these days though. Better chance of arranging a trade/purchase from a member at Warfare HQ http://www.warfarehq.com/forums/index.php?s= The Panzer General series have always been my favs for lightweight gaming before SC arrived. You can even get it for free through a combination of Hotu or JPs Panzers. 15. I do one of two things with Allied navy normally. Sell french boats turn one and start praying for a lame German offensive. And send Royal Navy to trash UBoats ASAP. Or I send French into Atlantic to trash UBoats ASAP, because I don't want to damage the Royal Navy because I want the money for something else. But either way, with me, its turn one find em sink em. Because once they are gone, they are gone. Makes shipping a lot easier when you just don't have to care.
  16. Call me arrogant, but damnit all, I never cheat, because damnit all, I AM going to win when I win. And I could care less what you guys think of me, because it's MY opinion of me that counts. Cheaters have weak minds.
  17. Well lets compare games. Hubert gives us SC, and it has subs that suck (they function correctly, they merely suck from a practical sense). He gives us a game where those that visit Ireland are never seen again (blasted leprecauns). He has a game where air power can reeeeeeeally ruin your allied game plan. But over all, his game is stable reliable functional easy to learn easy to play. And it's likely the lowest priced wargame I can think of (going on original price basis that is). Paradox releases HoI, and basically, the original release was likely to crash and sit inert more than anything else. Played lousy if at all. And several patches later, is still only considered great by the guy that made it and their PR department (amazing what being paid does to an opinion eh). And at 50 bucks, was twice the cost of SC, and you can bet, even if HoI was at least not a buggy unreliable piece of crud, it was certainly not twice the game SC is. So now they are releasing HoI2 and likely for 50 bucks. HC will likely sell his game for under 40 bucks, and you can bet HoI2 will NOT be worth more than SC2. So what it all comes down to is this in my opinion. Paradox has NOT established they can make good games (or even games that run) and certainly has not earned enough respect from me, that I am willing to pay top dollar for a game I would resist playing if I could get it as a scammed download. Yeah you heard that right people, I wouldn't want it for free. the ultimate test of a product, is when even free no one could care less. And remember the old expression people, "there's a sucker born every minute". So please don't quote sales figures, it only means Paradox might be good at running a con game.
  18. Very impressive sounding. Surely there has to be some manner of encypting that data or making it so each time it is saved, the act of reloading is made known so that a person could see that a game is always being multiple saved and blow the whistle. Because let's face it, a game that is known to be near cheat proof, is going to sell FASTER. And while errors might account for 1 or two reloads in the course of a full playing of a game, it should not be something that shows up at all in some games, if not most. In all my PBEM games, I have never had any trouble with playing a full turn, and sending the turn, and having any trouble. I have asked that a person resend me a turn before, but then, I actually asked for that. Personally, I think who ever really and truely cracks the security issue, might be deserving of a complimentary copy of the game
  19. I once had them in for like dozens of turns. Problem is, my opponent was merely ignoring them, his navy had something else to do, and the subs just didn't figure in his plans. The only way they survive, is if the allied player just desn't care if they are out there.
  20. Remember, they sell a lot of Big Macs, but save your breath trying to tell me that means they taste good hehe. HoI had one thing going for it, which sadly was unfortunate. I don't really think it had any competition on the shelf. I think a lot of people did what I did on hearing of it. Hey cool global grand strategy. But, I think if they had been given a chance of it or Gary's game, a whole lot of sales would never have happened. Wodin, I WANT World in Flames for the computer, but, regardless of what I want, I know the board game to much to think it's going to work. If Matrix Games announced they were doing a faithful recreation of ASL, I would be happy for that too. But I would have trouble accepting they would actually be able to pull it off. cWiF has been a "wish" for several years now. Generally speaking, when a game languishes for several years unrealised, it's because it juuuuuust wasn't possible. But hey, I am not going to be grumpy if they prove me wrong Can't think of a better time to be completely in error hehe. [ May 06, 2004, 01:12 PM: Message edited by: Les the Sarge 9-1 ]
  21. You know, to read the stuff coming out of Paradox, they actually "believe", I mean really BELIEVE we loved HoI. They actually don't seem to think there was ANYTHING wrong with it. They actually are so sure, they are actually promoting this HoI2 like it was something loved like SC. It is incredible. Can't tell if it's propoganda, or if the reason their games are so buggy, is because the people in charge are crazy.
  22. Only way to play a game competitively and make a real spectacle out of it, is for two machines Lanned with a referee in the room who did the clean installs himself. Then get the game played live on web cam so all of us can watch it live I think it would be a scream. Now THAT would be epic. Otherwise, I really haven't the slightest interest in competitive games, because there will always be that nagging suspicion that it just wasn't done fully fairly honestly above board all the way. And unless there is a real prize to win, what's the point anyways. Although, after the last TCP/IP game I played, I think I find I like it better enjoyment wise. Was more fun to nag my opponent while we played
