  1. I have the feeling that once you tell your guys to stand/crouch they will be shot by the enemy pretty quickly or at least suppressed. If moving closer to the enemy position lost you a lot of men, you pretty be sure that standing and shooting at the enemy will also lose you a lot of men. Was it some sort of reverse slope defence?

In those situations there are two possibilities either take a different approach route or accept the casualties.

  2. I recently played a few scenarios on Iron, but it can also be a help to see what every unit is aware of.

I don't find it much of a hassle, when you plan in general view, and only select your unit when plotting orders.

Are you talking about being aware of other friendly units? For me it doesn't add much as for me maintaining C2 is quite intuitive.

  3. Thanks to all for the answers, now things are more clear.

This applies also to my unit when i play Iron mode?

I try to explain better :

Unit A (blue force) start moving to x location, the unit has a good communication with Platoon HQ(radio + FPDA).

From the point of view of Platoon HQ after a while the unit A disappear, after which it reappear but i can see only the symbol "?", and never more the exact symbol of unit type.

    Is this correct?

I don't play Iron, but as far as I understand the only difference with iron and elite is that when you click a unit of your own, you see all the units that it can see (enemy and friendly). So what you're seeing, I guess is normal. If you don't have any unit selected you should be able to see all troops.

Iron just makes playing more of a hassle, as in my opinion it doesn't add more to the challenge.

  4. I play with restricted suppressive fire. I let my guys shoot at buildings where I suspect enemy units may be. But if one of my squads get ambushed by an enemy unit in a building, I will try to resist the temptation to have all my other guys spam that building until they get a contact marker.

But why on earth would you want to play with an gamepad? It's great for some games, but for CM??

  5. Yes this is how it is supposed to work. The markers can be bright or faded indicating how recent the information is. The HQ unit will then pass the information to its HQ and to its subordinates (so platoon HQ to its own squads and to its Company HQ) if they are in contact. These units will also "see" the ?, even if there is no LOS.

If the ? is bright for a particular unit, that unit will have a small spotting bonus. Having a good C2 also eliminates false contacts, where one unit is reported many times which gives you a better overview of the battlefield.

And finally units with good C2 will fight better.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Well surprisingly the 1.30 stand alone patch is still not out yet. But I'd be willing to bet the save game compatibility will be similar if not identical with the previous patch notes. But yes there are occasions that it does work, but not all the time and weird things can happen. So the official word from the readme is what follows:

This is for CMA, but it's the same engine as CMSF so it should work.

    http://www.battlefront.com/community/showthread.php?t=93650

And here's an excerpt from the NATO module 1.30 readme

    "PREVIOUS SAVE GAME COMPATIBILITY NOTE:

NOTE: Save games from v1.21 ARE COMPATIBLE with v1.30, provided that you save your turn-based games in the COMMAND phase (not the replay phase) before upgrading to v1.30. If you are upgrading from an earlier version than 1.21, e.g. 1.10 or 1.11, then save games from these versions are NOT compatible with 1.30. In this case, we recommend you backup your existing "CM Shock Force.exe" file before continuing with this install by renaming the file to something like "CM Shock Force old.exe". You can still launch the game with that renamed exe and finish your previous in-progress battles. Using that old exe however, you will not have access to all the new features of v1.30. Once you have finished your old games, you should delete that old exe file."

    Trust me, it works.

  7. Could anyone write a AAR, or even better record one for the mission 'British Mettle'?

I've tried allsorts, but am getting nowhere. My dismounted recon troops and snipers/spotters can't spot anything. Even the static tanks only get spotted when I bring the Challengers up! Despite good line of site to where the enemy is, there are shots coming in left right and centre and no one sees a thing :(

I'm playing on the second hardest dificulty level (the one before 'Iron'?), sorry I'm at work and not sat in front of the game.

The enemy in that scenario are VERY well hidden. The distances are also quite long over 1-2km and it is also pitch dark. How long do you let you units spot? If you have to give them quite some time (10-15 turns). Spotting also gets better as the scenario progresses because of the rising sun.

  8. IIRC the rain setting in CMx1 did not only effect LOS and spotting but the ground condition as well. If they implemented this in CMx2 as well it would have quite an impact on tactics. Oh those sweet memories of my Tigers bogging down .

IIRC bogging is increased if you set ground conditions to wet both in CMx1 and CMx2.

  9. correct , didnt install 1.2.1 as site claims you dont need too if you purchase a module. Planning to purchase NATO (preferable as a bundle as i dont own any other modules) so didnt think i needed to install 1.2.1 at all , i.e the 1.2.1 mods are installed with any module ... is what i took from the below phrase .... am i missing something here ? a brain perhaps :)

"Combat Mission: Shock Force - Paradox Version

These patches are applicable ONLY for the retail version distributed by Paradox Interactive. If you have ANY other Module installed, then you DO NOT NEED this patch."

    http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_versions&Itemid=317#Combat Mission: Shock Force

It means that once you've purchased and installed a module, your game automatically becomes a "Battlefront version" instead of a "Paradox version" and therefore you should from then on only install patches intended for the "Battlefront version", so for example the 1.21 patch intended for the "Battlefront version".

If you have not installed a module, then you should download and install the Paradox 1.21. The "YOU DO NOT NEED this patch phrase" basically means don't get this version of the 1.21 patch, but the other version (Battlefront) of the 1.21 patch.

So in your case, you can go ahead and install the 1.21 Paradox version.

  10. Question - when in a Warrior and you have a spotter in there...and presumably he's using the warrior periscope thingy - do you select the warrior or the spotter for directing? Just wondering if the spotter (from inside the vehicle) is able to get eyes on target? I haven't tried it yet so don't know....

I'm thinking specifically if the Warrior is in the hull down position - your spotter is going to be even lower than the rise - so I was wondering if the spotter had the same LOS as the warrior?

I think it doesn't matter. You can easily see this by looking at the time it takes to call in the strike. Also in some vehicles you need to UNBUTTON the spotter before he can use the optics. This depends on the specific vehicle, so you'll need to experiment with this.

A last point, the mast on the warrior is an antenna, but spotting is NOT calculated from the highest point (game engine limitation).

    Good luck!

  11. Was the damage very recent, and is the command status just not yet updated?

No, took the screenshot at the end of the game. The damage happened a couple of minutes before, and any case it shouldn't take this long to update.

I remember having a T-72 with destroyed autoloader still shooting once.

  12. @stikkypixie of course I don't expect it to make it so "I don't take casualties anymore". I just don't like having my ginormous Marine squad gun downed by a few guys with AKs in the corner because they have to all gallop in and then turn at what seems like an excruciatingly slow speed looking for targets.

My point is that reaction speed for the guys with the AKs are equally as excruciatingly slow so in the end it doesn't matter.

  13. Cause urban combat is only "adequate" as Elmar said... he's being a lot kinder than I would be ;). Non urban combat is great, looks great, sounds great etc... but not having a storm room command really makes urban combat a pain, especially in real time. Sure you can use suppressing fire right before they go in, but IMO the inclusion of one great feature (the option of light suppressing and heavy suppressing fire) should not have to be used as a "stopgap" because the game's lacking something it needs. But I posted a thread about it a while ago and apparently everyone disagrees with me except the dude above :D.

I know it's a tiny dev team. But it's a crucial feature IMO, in fact I'd rather have that and have the game ship without any scenarios/campaigns at all, than the reverse.

I can only hope BFC sees the wisdom in putting something like that in ;). If not in CM:N than in the Ostfront game I hope... (the one I'm really looking forward to)

It would take some of the chore out of urban fighting I agree, but sometimes I get the impression that people think this order will somehow magically allow them to clear rooms without casualties. I agree that troops walking in, stopping and then looking for enemies is real slow. But playing as a defender seeing your troops SLOWLY turning around to face the door where the whole US army just barged and then SLOWLy aiming is just as frustrating.

  14. Yeah, the inaccurate claims made by the pilots are notorious.Heh, I read somewere(don't remember where now) they even pretended to sink a carrier when the ship mentioned wasn't even hit,and it wasn't even a carrier but a cruiser. If that kind of error was possible, the correct estimation of an air strike against much smaller targets as tanks could seldom be done.

But it was an entire another matter when the story was narrated by the ground troops who called the air strike, they could see better the impact and afterward, resuming advance, encountered no opposition from the burning skeletons of what previously was holding them back. This kind of testimony from the ground is much reliable than the one from the sky,in my opinion.

Your first example is of a pre-planned air raid and doesn't count as CAS. The second (the Kharkov one) is more convincing but is vague in terms of time span. In a matter of moments can mean a lot things depending on the situation.
