  1. Why does nothing happen as far as destoyed vehicles continuing to be active as far as secondary explosions,or lingering explosions.I guess what I am trying to say is why do rounds in a destroyed vehicle not continue to go off several minutes after the vehicle has been taken out?I just think it would be kinda cool to have a vehicle burning for 4 or 5 minutes, then "WHOOOOOOMP" another explosion. That would add alot of flavor to the battlefield :D.Is there a mod for this or are any Mod masters planning on this?;) And yes,WHOOOOOOOMP is the best I could do about putting a big ass explosion into text.lol.

    They already do.

  2. Gents,

While we are waiting for 1.32 and the better goodness it will shower upon us, I thought I'd share a thought. Or two.

My men, in a playtest battle, have to assault into a building complex. The building is made up of several 8 level building tiles adjoining each other. The outer walls are solid. No LOS in or out. The inner walls are a nightmare. All the adjoining walls have many windows and doors. Some have the big window. You know, the bad one. :) So, I can anticipate being fired upon by the adjoining buildings.

BOOM! I blew the demo charges, busted into the ground floor simultaneously in several adjoining locations, and got wiped out. Not by guys IN the ground floor. Not by guys ADJACENT to where I'd entered. Some of the enemy were in the floor above. Okay, cool. Stairwells, firing holes, air ducts, spraying guns through the floor like they do in movies, whatever. It's abstracted.

What is, um, ABSURD, was getting effectively fired on by ALL THE OTHER GUYS. You know, like the ones UP ON THE 6TH LEVEL!! WITH RPGS!!! FROM THE NEXT ADJOINING BUILDING!!!!

    C'mon man.

How can you DREAM of having an LOS or LOF from a 6 floor difference, from an adjoining building location. They had a shared wall. This is not firing at a nearby building; this is firing at a building you are part of.

Is this simulating sending RPG rounds through the little air tubes you can send messages through, like at the bank? Laundry chutes? RC cars with rockets duct taped to them careening through the hallways?

I don't have an 8 floor building, but looking around my house, I am unable to see through the floors, the ceilings, or the walls. Sure, I could knock a hole or two around the place, but then I wouldn't be able to see beyond the very next room or floor. How can my pixeltruppen SEE that far, and then EFFECTIVELY place rounds and ordnance there?

BF.C, is there ANY hope of tweaking this multi-floor LOS/LOF?

    Thanks,

    Ken

I have noticed this as well. It's crazy.

  3. Excellent. Will check it out shortly.

I also like to do what you do regarding BLUEFOR. There is a very challenging and excellent British scenario called 'Cain and Abel'. After starting with the Brits, getting absolutely trashed, I decided to change the scenario with the equivalent US Army units. Made quite a difference. :D

I'm playing this scenario right now against in a PBEM, hope my opponent doesn't get any tips :)

  4. There was a thread here not that long ago re snipers and I had the impression that guys who had sniper experience were saying that due to the massive amount of extra training snipers get, there would be a lot more effect in a realistic simulation, than simply making their experience level higher in a game like CMSF.

Yes, but how much of that extra training is of use in a shooting scenario. Most of it is "extra" stuff like navigating, being able to identify enemy formations, working with sophisticated equipment, etc... Engineers units are a perfect example of this, in real life some tasks are only able to be performed by them. And they get tons of specialized training, but no-one expects them to fight better. If you want a unit to fight better you have to change it appropriately. And since CMSF only deals with the shooting part, that's going to be the most important factor.

The other thing is having realistic expectations, even the most experienced recon soldiers in real life will take more a than a couple of minutes to spot every enemy unit on the map, even in the best circumstances and in the game it is no difference.

  5. I don't know no. If don't if it's the case, but if recon units are better at spotting in real life it is probably because they received specific training to do this. This should be reflected in their experience level. Same for snipers.

It's not because you join a sniper team or recon team that you somehow get better eyes or anything. Better training -> better performance and in the game this mean higher experience level.

Sniper teams or recon teams are just a way in which the pixelsoldiers are organised.

Also you have to remember that a four man recon team only has 4 pair of eyes, whereas a regular squad has at least twice that much. So even if they are individually worse, they make up for by being with more. On the other because they are with less, they have lower chance of being spotted.

  6. I have just played with the Marines and i noticed that the rate of fire of the M 32 grenade launcher is slower than before.

From what i remember, Marines used to shoot a lot of grenades and now it seems they use less this weapon ( just like the m 203 grenade laucher on rifles).

Am i wrong ? Did someone noticed that ?

Last question, if it was modified is it more realistic ?

I've noticed that it depends on the distance to the target. Closer target really get lit up.

  7. Thanks for the test Stikkypixie. Infantry should be easier to spot with the LRAS3 (mounted on the M707) than with naked eyes, but it should still be really situationally dependent. As an aside, I've been meaning to compliment the weapons/profile mod you're using. Very nice.

    Steve

The mod is Scipio's, you should talk to him. The one thing I find weird the M707, is that it is not able to spot infantry in the open during daylight (2km) away. The infantry was stationary though. It's hard to judge what to expect from the capabilities from some of these pieces of equipment.

  8. At least with Normandy we can pretty much forget about all this high tech gear "not working correctly". Spotting will be spotting. Although I am sure there will be German optics threads.

That's the thing, it IS working properly.

This is the map I used. The M707 humvees are HIDING and BUTTONED up. The humvee with the .50 cal is unbuttoned and not hiding.

    m7071.jpg

10 Minutes later, still no contact:

    m7072.jpg

I then button up the .50 cal humvee and unhide at 20:00 (timer time) and unbutton the M707, first contact (note the time):

    m7073.jpg

And at the end of the turn:

    m7074.jpg

This only works for the truck. The M707 cannot spot infantry at that distance.

  9. The question is, does the 707 remain unspotted whilst being able to spot? '

How much of an advantage does the 707 have over, say an Abrams, or an officer in the open with binoculars?

Can the 707 be in a hull down position while spotting with this ability, n?

This last question is the biggest one, because of the necessary 'simplification' of BFTs LOS calculations - having three levels, was it? Maybe in RL the 707 could be parked so that only the tower scans the terrain and would be virtually invisible to the enemy it spots. But in the game, such a position may be impossible.

Yes, I had a regular humvee parked next to it. And it couldn't see a thing. It night though and the distances was about 2km. In daylight, the advantage will be less. It would be logical that it has about the same capabilities as an M1, because they would probably put the best and latest in the tank as well. Definitely better than regular binoculars.

Don't know about hull down though.

  10. It can't be both? Sometimes when you can't spot the enemy its because they can't be spotted. That big box on the roof isn't magic, it can't view around corners and through walls.

But they were wide in the open. On flat terrain. You say it's designed for maps over 4km, then why can't it spot infantry only 2km? Or does it apply only to bigger things like vehicles? Just wondering how to best use these suckers :)

Ok. I just checked. Put some trucks on the map and then you really see the advantage of the M707, cool :D. They were spotted almost instantaneously, whereas the humvees without the optics had a harder time.

  11. Its not so much BFC's fault that they field a Humvee varient that's useless, its more the DoD's fault. ;)

Look I am not familiar with the capabilities of the M707 so that's why I'm asking. Unfortunately this answer is not very helpful.

If the main advantage of the M707 is that it can determine distance and record positions with extreme accuracy, then the game is fine.

If on the other hand it improves the spotting ability of whoever is looking through the optics, then something needs to be changed because there is no effect whatsoever.

    So which one is it?

  12. Ok, so I'm sorta new here, came across what seemed to be an excellent game online reading through AAR. Poking around, I discovered I actually had a copy (lost to the great depths that is my games shelf). So I install it, give it a whizz, naturally doesn't work on win7.

So I log on here, take a poke, and notice the company wants a fee for their compatibility patch. Now I know I know, you guys got some other guy to do it, and he charged you, and the software business is hard, yaddda yadda ydaa.

Personally I think it's the DUTY of a software developer to continue to support their product for FREE until they discontinue it. You guys still sell Afrika Korps on your store, so in my eyes you should still support it.

I know there are plenty of companies that don't. There are also gaming developers releasing games with such stupidity as 'Constant Internet Connection Required To Play" and suchness, far worse than charging for a patch. My point isn't tit-for-tat. My point is be the best, friendliest company you can be and in the gaming world people will always come crawling back for more.

    BUT

My major question, shortfrom my customer service complaint, is this.

Wouldn't an XP/98/95 EMULATOR or a Virtual PC, work just as well for 1.03?

I mean, on a modern gaming rig running win xp in the background won't take up a lot of resources? If anyone's tried it, let me know...

I'm off to find an emulator...

You should not underestimate how change there is between Windows Xp and Win7. Also CM was written before Windows Xp was rolled out. It can be quite hard to make things compatible again. It's just the reality of software.

  13. Yes, the M707 needs to be unbuttoned to take advantage.

I suspect M707 would do a superior job at spotting on maps that far exceed CMSF map sizes. Like 4km or something. On CM size maps they can see stuff pretty much like everyone else can see stuff. I recall there being tests awhile ago on M707 spotting and there is a difference for a stationary unbuttoned vehicle. But on standard size maps its a subtle difference. M707 wasn't meant to take part in knife-fight close combat.

It was 2km away, not exactly knife edge distance, don't tell me it can see stuff 4km away but not 2. The vehicles were stationary and unbuttoned. I'll put it on higher elevation with a cover arc, to see what happens. But as it is now, either it's not working properly or I do not understand what it is suppose to be better at.

  14. ..faster? I made a flat map of about 2km long. Put some enemy infantry in the open. Had some M707 at the other side, and let the spot for 30 min. Not a single contact. It didn't matter whether it was night or day. I changed the temperature to cold in case the temperature contrast would increase the thermal capabilities.

    Can someone answer this definitively?
