  1. I have gathered from some threads that MG's can fire indirectly like MTR's? Does this mean they can shoot targets out of their LOS if directed by a leader with LOS? What about interdicting terrain? Can they somehow shoot over it as can MTR's? Can they be directed via radio over distance?

A clear explanation of this would be WONDERFUL...

    Thanks!

I don't think this is correct (99% sure). What you can do is area target certain location knowing that due to the spread of the bullets they will land somewhere where you don't have LOS.

  2. Sorry guys if this is stated somewhere, but searched a bit and could not readily find the answer. I was going to uninstall and reinstall the game on the same PC. Does this process use up an activation? Or no, because it is the same machine with the same hardware?

    Thanks!

If you kept the same hardware and operating system, you should not be asked for an activation.

  3. I was very surprised when I first played CMSF that BF had introduced a waypoint / target function allowing the accurate representation of the LOS from any point on the map, I thought this was extremely gamey and it added considerably to the labour intensiveness of the game, it was never an issue with the old version of CM so I was at a loss to understand why it was introduced, so I for one would not complain if it was removed altogether and we reverted back to making judgement calls on the LOS from positions other than the units themselves.

    Because

    a) The information isn't precise, i.e. it is dependent on the stance of your troops and if that changes LOS might change. Also unless you are very very diligent, the tool only gives you specific information. No-one is going to check ALL possible LOS for all his/her units.

The tool can in theory give you a full map of the LOS, but it is not the same thing as getting the full map of the LOS.

    B) When playing WEGO it is impossible to issue an order like "move there and stop until you can see that house", you can lose several minutes fine-tuning an order which is clear and simple. So until the AI gets smart enough, this will have to do

    c) LOS != LOF or spotting

  4. My lads heard sounds from over a slight rise. The enemy was advancing. Was it a foot patrol? Something else?

Imaging their surprise when a platoon of panzers came over the hill. Imagine the panzers surprise when they were seen by my Sherman overwatch.

But I'm surprised that my men couldn't recognize the advancing Germans by their engines. All I got were little "?" icons and no sounds.

The "?" represent everything that isn't positively identified, including sound contacts.

  5. 23) You're supposed to be able to set different targets for each waypoint. I'd think this also includes clearing targets. This clearing doesn't work.

If you have set a target in one waypoint and clear it for the next waypoint, the target is still there once your unit reaches waypoint2 and continues forward.

You can clear it by giving a face order.

  6. You're missing the point - when plotting a move in WEGO - you need to be able to use the LOS tool to see if it's worth unhiding your men or not. As it stands you can't do this. You can't spin this as a positive feature of the game.

In CM1 you could unhide a unit whilst plotting a move, and also choose to re-hide them. I may be wrong but I believe the reason you can't do this in CM2 is because WEGO is Realtime with pauses.... and as such can't be altered, perhaps the devs will comment on this.

A workaround to this is to simply select a unit that is not hiding plot a waypoint on the exact spot of the hiding unit and check the LOS. Unless you want to know what the hiding *knows* is there, in which case the <?> need to be more distinctive. By the way, there is no way I can be missing the point AND spinning things. It's one or the other ;).

  7. One could argue not usefully often. And, to my original point, I think this makes the point: the LOS tool should be indicating what they can see *when they peek*.

You've got to remember that hiding troops are virtually invisible to the enemy as well (in the right circumstance). It cuts both ways. Maybe it can be improved if the leader of the squad keeps on spotting continuously as the rest of the squad hides or something.

  8. akd: This was the post from Statisoris that confused me: "TRP's do not allow mortars and other on map artillery pieces to direct fire into the TRP area without LOS to the target spot. HQ units will still need to plot artillery missions into no LOS/LOF TRP areas."

As you can see from several of the following posts, the feeling is that someone who can communicate to the arty MUST have LOS to the TRP to know there is a target there to shoot at.

I continue to be confused as to which it is...

You don't need LOS to the TRP. Say you want to call a circular fire mission, as long as the TRP is 50m from the centre of the target the TRP will have an effect. You can see this when looking at the details of the fire mission. TRP don't change any "rules" about the fire mission regarding LOS, they only enhance the accuracy and I believe also eliminates the need for spotting rounds.

  9. What's the best way of infantry taking out a wooden pillbox? I sneaked up behind one with three guys carrying two demo charges but was unable to throw one in, like in the old days. I ordered it to land as close as I could but of course it had no effect. Then to make things worse the three guys charged after it, out into the open presumably as if they had made a breach in a wall/hedge. Somehow they managed to dive back into cover unharmed, under a hail of bullets from the four occupants of the pillbox!

I've had success just by keeping firing machine guns at them. This takes a lot of time though.

  10. Thanks for your reply. I have tried it with teams. On the battle I am playing at the moment I have a team of four men and a group of four vacant foxholes. One man has occupied one foxhole and the other three are lying prone behind it. The troops are not under fire or even observed by enemy forces. It is a bit frustrating and looks vaguely ridiculous. I also have a feeling those guys not in the foxholes are going to be in trouble when the enemy eventually comes round the corner!

Although not 100% surefire you can try to help them a bit by setting a face order.

  11. I refer you to page 26 of your own link.

Backblast dampening measures to modern heavy projectors are quite useful if you don't want to damage your position too much. Collateral damage has become much more of an issue since WWII. It also means that you have less to worry about if there are friendly troops moving about. So there is an advantage to backblast amelioration, but that does not indicate that the use of the weapons without this is impossible indoors.

What you mean with page 26? All I see is that the RPG-7 can be fired from buildings.
