  1. Weeellll - grids help _predict_ LOS. With a grid you can see folds in the terrain that you otherwise might not spot. Your next question would likely be "but there are so many gridded terrain variants, which should I use? Browsing the previews will give you some idea. However, I would recommend you try the RM-GAJ series. Unfortunately, there aren't so many nice previews of these uploaded, so they don't stand out in the list. The "special" thing about these is the diagonal lines that RocketMan added: Although this preview isn't exciting, maybe it gives you the idea that these show the folds well. I also see that some of these are yet to be uploaded to the new site: I'll get on and do those myself soon! GaJ PS - some RM-GAJ mods have "thick" in their name. These are 5m interval grids, which are not to everyone's taste (IE Rocketman liked them, but I don't know who else )
  2. Wow - something really broke there eh? I'm really suspecting cookies at this point - if you can get firefox to clear all it's cookies this might help. The only other way to try to solve it would be to get on line at the same time as me, try it out, and I can look for error messages in the logs (has to be done together because the logs don't last long). Or we could just shrug our shoulders! GaJ
  3. I also thought: get your browser to delete/clear all it's cookies. GaJ
  4. I had some trouble with the service provider overnight - I wonder if that caused this (though I'm not sure how!) The site seems to be working right now - you could try again. You also could press control and shift while you press reload, which I _think_ causes it to reload everything (including the flash plugin it uses). Let me know how you go...
  5. As I mentioned over in CMAK forum, you can link to your preview pictures in annoucements of the mods here. So for example, angryson just uploaded this one: And if want to display your work in more glory, point to the full preview pic: As you can see (by mousing over above) you can make these link to the mod download page... GaJ
  6. Sure. If we look at this from the perspective of "these are mods", then I was expecting you to use the search function for this. Suppose you want to browse "PzIV" mods. Then you type in PzIV into the search and you get to browse through all mods with PzIV in their title or description etc. So it isn't an exact term. In the case of looking for a marines scenario, my first thought is that you would search for "marines". This wouldn't fully meet your request for two reasons: 1) Size isn't taken into account 2) You would get both marines mods and marines scenarios I wonder if this is telling us that really, a custom made warehouse for scenarios is what's needed (instead of wacking scenarios in a warehouse that's set up for storing mods)? GaJ
  7. Yes - someone else uploaded a map, and gave it a "type" of "map". This seems to work So - you will need to first register/log in, obviously. Then go to "Your Stuff" tab and click on "Add New CMSF Mod" Here you will find that the choice of country probably doesn't suit too well, since they are all CMx1 countries. Pick the closest Upload the Mod, and ideally a preview picture with it. Then go back to click on "Your Mods" and edit the country. Now you will be able to type in whatever is most appropriate, and people who follow you will get whatever it is you typed as a choice at the beginning as well Any probs, don't hesitate to holler! If it turns out that there's something not quite right (can't set some parameter the way it needs to be for CMSF, just get as close as you can and we'll fix after you let me know ) GaJ
  8. Hi All, I was focussing on getting all the CMx1 material into the replacemend CMMODs site before popping in here and mentioning that CMSF is most welcome too So ... CMSF Mods are most welcome at GreenAsJade's CM Mods Warehouse. Hopefully, easy navigation, low number of clicks to get what you want, and decent search will be some of the reasons this site will have been worth the effort. Also, the ability to browse previews of your favourite mods - for example by the unit type or for example by your favourite author - or anything else you can search for - seems to have worked out quite nicely. Right now there's a grand total of one (1) CMSF map on the site (compared to 2400 CMx1 mods). If you're going to be the adventurous first person to start with putting a CMSF Mod up, drop me a line because there are a few "pump priming" things needed (how to get the right country type etc for a brand new mod of a brand new game type). Or just try it out, do your best, then let me know if there's something I need to fix GaJ
  9. I see that the fantastic uploading volunteers have done yours already Take a look! GaJ
  10. Heh - I haven't touched McMMM code for at least 4 years. I suppose I have the code somewhere The new CMMODS is taking my time at the moment... GaJ
  11. In the case of CMMOS, this nice "organisation" put great demands on the mod authors to enable it. McMMM took an opposite approach: make life easy for mod authors as well Creating a mod that works with McMMM requires precisely zero effort on behalf of the mod author McMMM has a feature - "Mod Sets" - that not only enables good organisation of groups of mods, it also lets you specify where to download them all from and will actually download them for you!. You can read about it here Unfortunately this feature was never really picked up by the community - I'm not really sure why not. Maybe I didn't publicise it well, or maybe it's too much work creating mod packs (like it was too much work creating CMMOS mods... hence the reason that ran out of steam). GaJ
  12. Yes - I have a standing offer out there to port it to a Mac if someone gets me a Mac to use for the job. It's been a long wait (2003 I think I offered!)
  13. Fantastic! It's definitely best if you can upload a preview picture along with the mod, separately from inside the zip file. For the ones I've uploaded, there's been a preview inside the zip, and I've just pulled it out onto my desktop and uploaded it along with the zip. Then the catalog can show the preview, which is nice. In some cases, it's not convenient to put up a preview, and people have not done so. That's OK. A preview can also be added later. Whoa! Soap and water! (*) There's a windows mod manager that's the most elegant piece of software under the sun, I'm sure of it: McMMM ... "Martin's Combat Mission Mod Manager". Who is that Martin bloke anyhow? Someone should give him a medal GaJ *: "Soap and Water" ... I realised this may be Australian slang. It is short for "Wash your mouth out with soap and water, how did you get those nasty dirty words in there"
  14. Or if you're feeling proud, you can link to the full-size preview
  15. Right now volunteers are slaving away reposting everything that was at CMMODs. Please join in if you can - either click on the link that takes you to a particular game type, then choose an author who's mods aren't all uploaded, and upload some by getting them from CMMODS while you can... or, go through your existing collection and upload ones that you have that other people haven't done yet! The search feature is handy for this - just paste the zip name in there, and it will tell you if that one's done or not. The new CMMODS site is ready for new mods too, now - you go to the "Your Stuff" page and select the "Add New Mod" link. You can link to your mods from here, like this: ... Dave Inglett's Tricamo Snow Tiger I, recently uploaded. The only big thing I'm still working on is enabling uploads of mods bigger than 10Mb: that's work in progress. Oh - that and getting the CMBO and CMSF descriptions of the CMMODs mods uploaded. GaJ
  16. Sorry for the slow reply - I'm not at BFC so often. I think you are right that the checking of the file name is perhaps too strict, and it should ignore case. I will fix that as soon as I can.
  17. Thanks - yes, it seems the community will be well looked after. I have kept this in mind with my site, as well. The mods are stored in a commercial data repository (Amazon S3), so if I need to disappear or can't afford to support it, someone else can pick it up without the need for download/upload. Similarly, I plan to make the source code for the site available, both for people to help add features and also again in case I can't carry it on, then it's there. Downloads of the database backup will also be available. (I did all this stuff for the WeBandOfBrothers club database, it works out well: I had to write that one because the previous implementor disappeared, and there was no way to pick up his site because none of it was available :S At least now it is.). GaJ
  18. Signup: the usual basic deal for a website - click on "Log In", click on "Register", and register. Login: type in your username and password. The buttons for register and login are at the bottom right. This may be a design flaw, possibly they should be at the top right ... but why do I have to log in? GaJ
  19. Hi All, If you read the CMAK forum as well, you can see (here) that a replacement CMMODs site is now available. Probably easiest if discussion is one one thread - that other one seems as good as any? See you over there? GaJ. Text from the other thread: Hi All, The first phase of a "replacement CMMODs" is now available. You can take a look here The "first phase" is one where the site is accepting pre-existing CMMODs mods. This is happening now, and upload is commencing. As soon as each mod is uploaded it's available. All the basic CMAK and CMBB mod data from CMMODs is loaded, so we can see what remains to be uploaded. CMBO and CMSF mod data, and also more details about all the mods (especially the "description" from the original author" - yay!) are on their way. The next phase will be enabling uploading of new mods. After that come feature's that you might want to suggest - seaching mods, arranging them, whatever else. Most important point right now: this is early days, so if something looks like it might be broken, please let me know ASAP. With respect to the "look" of the site, I just grabbed a basic framework that was easy, I'm totally open to making it look better if someone has concrete suggestions and can help with the CSS for it.
  20. Oh - everyone is encouraged, welcome, appreciated, if they can help with the uploading existing CMMODs mods. A few enthusiastic volunteers have either their own collections from CMMODs, or the DVDs that are circulating, and are getting going with that. The more the better. One note on this: if you can upload the preview picture as well as the mod itself, we will all thank you so much more. You _can_ upload just the mod zip, but the site is much more effective with the preview present. (Just compare the page listing CMBB mods for "pat" compared to "MikeyD". One has previews, the other doesn't....) Thanks! GaJ PS: it is recorded who uploads each mod, separate from who the author is. As soon as I can, I will put up a page recognising the great efforts of the uploaders - listing who has uploaded how much.

  22. Is CMMODS still around? My browser is currently hanging trying to go there... GaJ
  23. It seems obvious that BTS are in a quandary with CMC 'cause if they kill it there will be an outcry but if it comes out there will be an outcry (about Vista support for CMBB). So they do nothing: what else can they do? I reckon you won't see CMC. Those 2000+ posts? It's just people shooting the breeze. How many in this thread alone? _boring_ people. The only interesting thing (I read them all, and liked them at the time) was the ideas - the "data" in the conversations. The people were cardboard. Have you noticed that Azimov's primary charaterisation method for men is to describe how they smoke? ROFL. GaJ
  24. Out of interest, why are you asking about Port 7023? You usually find it in your router setup... GaJ
