I have had a lot of utility with snipers against the AI. However against human players I would be more cautious as any player can use area fire with heavy weapons upon your sniper position, after they have a hint of it's position.

You can also use that to your advantage, given the enemy attention paid to your sniper team is not being paid to something else.

^ See my example above, against a human opponent. Trying to kill my sniper team cost him several valuable resources.

  2. In very rare cases, you can even use snipers at the sharp end.

Time-stamped below is an example of such:

Their position on the third roof of a multi-building complex kept them relatively safe from enemy fire, and aside from cowering a few times, they were free to fire upon the enemy for the duration of the battle. Their position and fire stopped an enemy attack long enough for me to divert additional assets to deal with it.

The Board officially lists me as registering as of Feb. 9, 1999, but I was registered on the BTS board sometime in 1997, so I think I predate everybody here now. Maybe. Except Steve and Charles of course.

Mr. Emrys, you were already an old man when I got here, and I got here 15 years ago.

Oh god, I think I'm getting old!

Anyways that was probably a very boring post to read sorry - I do miss some of the old timers and I wonder what became of them like Fionn Kelly or JasonC for example.

I do too, but apparently Steve has a long memory too.

I wasn't present for the Fionn Kelley fiasco, (not having internet access at the time) but from the few scattered tidbits I pulled together, it was a veritable storm of invective.

I forget where I heard about it but I read an AAR and I was utterly fascinated. I immediately was disappointed the infantry was abstracted, I do remember that, but during the AAR at one point a rivers crossed because it was frozen over and I was hooked.

For me, all it took was a picture of a platoon of halftracks, driving towards a patch of woods. Only having experience with 2D and Isometric strategy games made me look upon some true 3D halftracks with something approaching a religious experience. I came straight over to the site and bought CMBB, didn't even think about it. I don't regret it either.

The most memorable and best CMx1 release in my opinion was CMBB.

Did you ever finish 'To The Volga'? I gave it a real go once, but after about 4 days of plugging away at it I had to quit.

I will admit though that join date is so old now I keep this account I made when i was friggin 15 (lol) and named after my favorite band. I wish Id had the good taste and epic handle of Gen Ripper with that pic, I forget if its from his 'fluoridation of water speech' or when he was on the base PA system..

You can always change in in your user cp. I did.

I used to be called SLIM, after an old childhood nickname.

Nice poem 😂  I've got nothing better to do so here's another one 😂 :

There is a game by Battlefront, that rules the gaming league

Combat Mission owns this title, and none other can compete.

But sadly the game never released, and stayed in development mode,

And even after thirty years, people still wait for it to go.

    I like you.

    Welcome to the forums.

Am not sure I should vote for Gen Ripper as he's starting to get close to my number of upvotes and that will affect my status.

Oh, to hell with it.  I will give Ripper's last post (only) an upvote as well!

(But, nothing for Sgt. Squirrel as am trying to catch up!)

To my mind, the only thing important about someone is the date they joined the forums.

That's all that really matters, were you here long enough to know what the heck you're talking about... ;)

Anyone have any tips for these pests?  I was playing a game against the cpu where I had a TON of King Tigers vs various soviet afvs and at guns.  The guns weren't much of a threat to the king tigers but they would fire for massive amounts of turns and never be spotted by the tank.  My arty observers could see them and I dropped "cease and desist" hints on them but I couldn't believe how my tigers could never find them after 9-10 turns of constant pings off their armor.  Same thing happened a few turns later with some hidden JS tanks in the woods.  Not complaining at all, just wondering how to spot them without my TC losing his head after a turn or if the Kings visibility is that bad?  Actually had some Panzer IVs and Panthers with them as well and they couldn't find the threats, however they weren't getting any ap rounds off their main guns and optics.

Area fire is your friend. [Target Briefly] any place you suspect of having a gun.

Am waiting for someone to decide that these scores are meaningless and not such a great idea after all.

Remember when the reputation system was turned off entirely because people were mass-downvoting other members they didn't like?

It should have died then, and stayed dead.

On to the first part of the tactical conundrum: how do you spend firepower efficiently so you gain superiority?

There is no kill like overkill. Forget efficiency, use your ammunition at prodigious rates until the bad guys stop shooting so much, then you can turn it down a notch. The ONLY ammunition I try to conserve is submachinegun ammunition. Everything else gets spent like a spoiled teenager with a platinum credit card.

So, to elaborate on what I mean a little, let's start with "spending firepower. The reason I call it spending firepower is because everything you do in combat has the opportunity of making you weaker. Moving your units around the map, shooting at a target, firing artillery, all has a chance to limit or reduce your firepower, or reduce your resources. So, the question becomes how can you do this to your opponent, before they do it to you? How can you control the loss of your military to your advantage?

As far as I'm concerned, ammunition IS currency, but what you purchase with it is the prevention of casualties. You expend your ammunition with the idea that preventing the enemy from shooting back at you effectively, you will receive fewer casualties, and thus suffer lower attrition than the enemy. This keeps your force in shape for longer, and gives you more meat for the grinder during those critical moments.

The next part of my question applies to when you are already licking your wounds. How do you regain fire superiority once it is already lost? Now, I don't mean necromancy, bringing forces back from the dead, but instead how do you deal more damage with less firepower in order to turn the tides of battle?

Find a flank, or withdraw. If you've gotten your butt kicked, sitting down and continuing to shoot it out with the enemy is the LAST thing you want to do. This is also a prime time to use whatever arty you have available in a Heavy/Maximum strike against the enemy lead positions. That will enable you to break contact.

Oddly enough, I did much the same thing in a recent quick battle. It worked like a charm.
