  1. Something I have been trying out lately and in theory it sounds great is having a kubelwagen carry a sharpshooter out as far as is practicable and dropping the sharpshooter off, leaving him to get in hiding and then (hopefully) wait for the enemy to pass by. My kubelwagen has done it's job and has returned to my lines and into safety. if the kubelwagen spots anything on the way, I consider whether it's worth having a further look or not by scouting on at a fast pace. But the primary objective is to leave a sharpshooter in my opponents rear. I got the idea from a book I read "Hilters Mountain Troops" were the 6th SS "Nord" division perfected this tactic against the russians in the finnish forests and later used it with great success againt the US troops back on mainland europe. my own attempts have met with less success but it's still early days yet.
  2. do a search in tips & tricks for "bunkers", plenty of into there. However you already know that as I see you have posted in some of them, can you bypass this bunker? leave it behind you? Coldmeter
  3. see this post from december jonp. Panzerfaust 30K? Coldmeter [ April 20, 2003, 11:30 AM: Message edited by: coldmeter ]
  4. The M22 was never used in combat with the Americans, the only combat they saw was with the British 6th Airborne Division on March 24th 1945.

  6. Just to point out that there is always the exception to the normal, I had a 251/22 (which is longer barrelled than the two halftracks mentioned above) and this guy took out a T-34/85 and a IS-2 at ranges of 480 and 290 respectively. The IS-2 took front turret and upper hull penatrations from the 75/46mm hollow charge rounds. So if the conditions are right for you and you think you can jump the big guy, go for it. It's a sweet thing to see that huge tank knocked out by your countryside runaround!!
  7. The PAK 36 ceased production in 1942, however there were such large quantities of this gun produced (over 5300)that large numbers were kept in service and to give them a better anti tank performance the "Steilgranate41" or stick bomb was introduced. it was a hollow charge bomb, weighing 19lbs mounted on a stick, with a perforated tail boom carrying fins. the stick was loded into the muzzle so that the tail boom and the fins surrounded the gun barrel. A special blank cartridge was then loaded and used to fire the stick bomb to a max range of 800m. Due to it's low velocity, normal engagement range was 300m with a penetration of 180mm. They were certainly used in France '44 were the close country would have favoured the short engagement range, so yes you did see it in band of Brothers.
  8. Does anybody know of any documented engagements that took place between German armour and Russian lend lease Shermans. I have come across one, it involved the 5th SS "Wiking" division near Kowel in march 1944. The details are pretty thin but there could be enough info to maybe try and get a scenario designed out of it. It is stated that Pz IV's were engaged against lend lease Shermans. The 5th SS "Wiking" division were in a pretty sorry state after escaping from the Cherkassy pocket and had been resting in Poland. Has anybody else any more info on this action or other actions involving Panzers and lend lease equipment/Shermans? [ January 13, 2003, 11:35 PM: Message edited by: coldmeter ]
  9. I might be repeating myself here through this post, but did Napoleon not ask when a new general was brought before him for the first time after reading his credentials " yes yes, but is he lucky". you may frown upon your unlucky or lucky scores/hits but I'm sure the man in the field sixty years ago would much rather prefer any source of welcome relief... be it lucky or unlucky. I'm no brainy box know it all, I'm just saying it as it seems to an ordinary irish joe... After all it's only a game lads.
  10. Andreas, what did you have in mind for saturday afternoon? I might consider dropping over for the weekend ( I'm in cork but hey it's only an hour and a half away, plus plenty of irish folk in london to keep me occupied for the rest of the weekend.) Is already a planned group going?
  11. I had a situation in a scenario where a platoon of pioneers held a small village. I had them all hid in buildings and instead of assulting the attacking T-34's as they came into range I waited for them to get as close as possible. To make sure none of the squads opened fire too hastily I put their cover arcs pointing in the opposite direction to that of the approaching T-34's. After waiting through some very tense moves I let the pioneers squads loose. I had all my target tanks ranged between 15-30 meters. The end result was five knocked out T-34's. This approach although very successful is dependent on the tank platoons maneouvring close to your squads and your squads having the good sense to keep their heads down until the right moment. In the same scenario earlier on I did try to sneak one squad around and behind a T-34 that was passing by, but despite sneaking and being in scattered trees the squad was discovered and eliminated. I would not be so keen on any sort of assault/flanking attack on any tank that was to be carried out by infantry alone. I 'd much rather play the waiting game and hope for a good ambush.. Just the reflections of a naive irish lad.....
  12. I'm a big fan of the German 81mm motar spotter with radio and the rounds are falling after only 2 minutes, so that's pretty good for time.
  13. Yes I have also heard about this on a TV docu. Apparently the tank hunter squad first threw a special grenade infront of the tank to blind everyone inside that may be looking outside. This then gave them the chance to get up close and throw in this disc like charge to knock off the tank crew.
  14. If you have a sharpshooter and you have him in position, when he is not hiding is he in a camouflaged and well concealed state, or is he just as likely to be spotted as your infantry squad. I would assume that he would natuarally get under cover. My reason for asking is that i have just started to use them, but I have kept them in hiding and you don't get much action out of a man hiding...
  15. After reading the very helpful strategy guide and picking up on the very good tip about ambushes when hiding in buildings I decided to give it a go. Well it was more than impressive to watch the poor buggers entering the factory floor only to be met with a hail of lead from my hiding boys!! Reminded me of the factory scene from the film "Cross Of Iron". Anyways just dropping the info off after being thoroughly satified with a top tip from the start guide.
  16. Just wondering what happens to a tank when it's commander gets killed by say a sharpshooter or motar? I would assume that it would lose a good deal of it's effectiveness, but has anybody had any first hand expeirence with this happening to them? What happened and couuld you tell if your commander was bumped off by a sharpshooter?
  17. just remembered another one, the Germans used to call the M4 Sherman the "Tommy Cooker" because of it's tendancy to go up in flames alot with some poor lads stuck inside them.
  18. Just wondering what type of scenario you be likely to find these units in and against what type of oppisition. Mountain troops up mountains fightiing simialar units i can see, what did the security units get up to? Luftwaffe infantry, where these guys just luftwaffe personnel that made went into making up battalions in order to replace infantry losses. What type of actions would they have been involved in? looking forward to your replies....
  19. Not much else to add to what has already been posted but jsut to say that the germans also had a couple of B-1's on the channnel islands aswell. of the conversions about 60 were flamethowers and 16 were SP howitzers. The SP guns did not actually see any action, unlike the flamethrowers.
  20. I read somewhere that the german soldiers nicknamed the T-34 "Mickey Mouse" because when both hatches were open on the turret the silhoutte looked similar to that of the Mickeys head and big ears!
  21. I eventually decided to play the russain side in CMBB just to saee what it was like. I picked both sides units just for the fun of it. I gave myself 5 T-34(late) up against 4 Tigers along with the usual support elements. The terrain was fairly hilly and I used it well to sneak up behind 2 tigers and it seemed like my ambush was going to work. I sent 2 T-34's in directly behind 2 tigers from a distance of 70 metres thinking this must be a kill, but once the tigers spotted me my tank commanders got jumpy and started to reverse out of there. Anyone have any ways of making sure your commanders follow the job through? (Tank Commanders were regular)
