Arty: Less Accurate Now? Whos the King?
Tigrii replied to Patton21's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Mortars are usually inaccurate, much more so than normal arty. I'd say that large-caliber spotters with TRPs still dominate. -
The unbeliveable has happened: I lost a Veteran Jgdpz IV to rockets! A Yak 9-T got it, while my AA halftrak refused to engage and sat twiddling it's thumbs (or it would have been if it had any).

I've noticed that when you have a platoon hiding and the enemy infantry draws near, the platoon HQ always opens up first. Why is that? Also, I've noticed that when a tank shoots at an enemy AFV and it ricochets, the shooters becomes cautious or shaken. Is this because they're afraid that the enemy is invincible or something?

I've heard that you can add to the ETA of arty spotters in CMBB. How do you do this?

How to advance over fairly open ground
Tigrii replied to BotD's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Smoke is the most useful thing, IMHO, for advancing inf. over open terrain. If you can pick troops, get lots of radio light arty spotters. They're great for smoke barrages. Also, remember that WWII battles are won with the gun, not the bayonet. If you can locate your foe, you don't always have to assualt, just stand off and use superior firepower, especially mortars and MGs, to rout and kill them. Suicide scouts work well with this technique. -
How do you FTP it onto the web?

Efficiency in flamethrowing
Tigrii replied to Dr. Rosenrosen's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
surely you meant 180° ?? othwerwise, I sure would like to know how you do a complete 360° with the rotate command. seriously, a PAUSE function pertaining to the firing of mortars, AT gun pieces, AA gun and assorted other equipment would be rather useful. There are workarounds for some, but not for allpossible applications of such a command/feature.</font> -
I have a good Flammpanzer vs. Bunker MG screenshot, but since I have no clue how to post it, it isn't avaliable (see my post: Screenshot help (2))

How do you get the paint file onto a post? And how do you get movies of Action Phases?

If you want to kill tanks, get planes with big bombs. For the rusians, get PE-2s. For the Germans, get whatever Stuka variant has the best bombload. My favorite is the PE-2 FT, whcih has 8 550 pound bombs! It is a dive bomber, so it's pretty accurate. It's very expensive, though.

Often I find that giving it a rotate order to make it do a 360 before firing delays it considerably. -
Sturmtigers vs. Tanks-wscreenshot (maybe)
Tigrii replied to Tigrii's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Sorry the pic didn't work! -
The sturmtiger shell landed a fair distance away and yet it still managed to damage the gun of a Jagdtiger and reduce morale to shaken.

assaulting tanks (what movement to use)?
Tigrii replied to Biff's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
If you were within 50m of the vehicle you should have used Follow Vehicle. If not, move or MTC, since it's night so it's less likely you'll be spotted. -
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you take screenshots? (I have a Windows ME if that makes any difference. I still have it even if it doesn't make a difference).

Two things: one, the amazingly survivng FT had a yellow line, a casualty, and was shaken. 2: Imagine a FT-armed plane.

Shock results and crew elimination?
Tigrii replied to John O'Reilly's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
If they take another casualty they bail out, so an AT rifle can't kill the whole crew. -
Very poetic, I'm sure.

These seems to me to be quite impossible, especially with CMBB's highly sensitive infantry. Trenches work in theory but when I try them my guys just get pinned. The Germans had lots of devilish tactics in WWII that I want to try to replicate, which involve withdrawing infantry. One example is: You have some inf. The enemy attacks. You fight for a minute or two, and then retreat. The enemy occupies your position. You call down presighted arty on them. You counterattack the panicked troops and reclaim your position, enhanced by craters. This would work really well in CM with TRPs, trenches, and fallback foxholes, but I just can't extricate infantry under fire. How do you do this?

TRPs, defensive arty, and the Inf-HE defense
Tigrii replied to JasonC's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I tried a QB using two TRPs and a Conscript 210mm arty spotter. There were two flags that I was defending. I put a TRP on each flag, both of which were in sizeable patches of woods, and set up my MLR behind the flags. It was a slaughter. I took out an entire company with the 210 at each flag, which broke the back of the battalion-sized attack. I then counterattacked and annihilated the last company. It was a total victory. There are two interesting things I noticed. One, the non-TRP barrages had a time of 43 min.! Second, the first time I called in arty on a TRP, it took 1 minute, but the next time it took 3. Why is that? -
P.S. Too bad they don't have onboard Katyushas. And yes I KNOW it would be unrealistic, but it certainly would be cool.
-
If a rocket spotter fires on a TRP, what happens? Are they extremely accurate like with artillery? I hope so. Imagine 144 300mm rockets hitting the same place at the same time!
-
I am wondering what the downside of mortar spotters is. They are cheap, have adequate ammo, and can have some pretty respectable calibers (like 160mm). Also, the same thing applies to rockets, and they shoot off a ton of large caliber missiles at once. So what's the catch?
-
The major problem with this strategy is that if you increase the numbers to actual battle scale, say, two Cat platoons and six T-34 platoons, it's a lot harder because the ratio of force to space goes way up and you can't zoom around very well without being confronted toe-to-toe by the Cats. Also, they can cover each others flanks.

M17s get possessed/suicidal
Tigrii replied to Dr. Rosenrosen's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I had an ISU-122 hull-down behind a ridgeline that was searching for targets. But when it sees a Tiger, what does it do? It charges! The Tiger traversed and knocked it out with one shot.
