Top Ten Reasons Artillery is Poorly Modelled
Lumbergh replied to X-00's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Well, although I would welcome more realism in any aspect of the game, I have to say that perhaps there could be such a thing as "too much" detail in the artillery model. If it got to the point of everyone needing a slide rule to play a QB we might as well throw our copies of CM in the trash and go join the Army. I jest, but you get my point. -
Aimed Fire Issues (Perceived Target Height)
Lumbergh replied to rexford's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
So, if I can follow up to your post, how does the amount of ambient light affect what you see through the gunsight? Does a higher-magnification gunsight require relatively more or less light to function? Reeeally interestion post, thanks. Should be titled " Fun With Gunsights " -

How do you get the preplanned fire-missions to be delayed? That is really nifty! -

Feel the LOVE of the Sturmtiger.
Lumbergh replied to MAsta_KFC's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Come to think of it, I am surprised that the Sturmtiger never made it into a Python episode. There is something Pythonesque about it, no? -

I chose the wording with purpose. The ST does nothing slightly. </font> -

This has all been discussed to death before. The sturmtiger shell has a much higher explosive filler/casing ratio than a bomb. Hence its obscene blast. As for the reload time, I think a number of people have asserted that BFC put this thing in the game with a tad bit of irony, kinda like, "You want an unbertank, ok--here's an UBER tank, now go play with it and stop bugging us". -
I think the demo scenarios are a little, erm, unbalanced. Making it difficult to use tank hunters to their best effect. But, yes, if you leave them with a 30m cover armor arc, they will engage any tanks that come within range. Take a peek at the "MasterGoodale vs Parabellum AAR" thread for a nice example of early war tank hunter teams in action. Not to mention that it is a good/interesting/funny read. Also, take a look at the FAQ thread, in this forum, and at the "Tips and Tricks" forum. Finally, always try using the search function. Nearly every question has been asked before, and it is much faster to find an answer this way than to wait for people to post!

American view of the Eastern Front
Lumbergh replied to Hans's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Actually - I never said anything of the sort, I actually was pointing out that corporate America has turned to the rest of the world as it's slave labor market now that it can no longer find enough cheap labor here in the US. There seems to be alot of economics professors in here that are dying to tell us all why America is much better off by exporting its' manufacturing jobs, personally I don't see it, and don't agree with them. But then again it's America - and I have the right to disagree with them. To them I seem uniformed and uneducated - to me they sound like politicians spewing rhetoric of how they are making a better world for us whether we can see it or not.</font> -

Accuracy of thrown AT weapons
Lumbergh replied to Tigrii's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
But keep in mind that the throwing animation is an abstraction of your guys running out and close-assaulting the tank. They're not just sitting there and lobbing molotovs 30m! -
American view of the Eastern Front
Lumbergh replied to Hans's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
On a strictly macro level, an economist would say that yes, in general, workers in more developed countries have much higher developed levels of human capital. One of the big mysteries of macroeconomics is why capital does not flow from rich countries to poor countries, since, on paper, poor countries should grow faster than rich countries. Human capital is one small part of the answer. However, don't let this fool ourselves as to what service industry jobs are. Think AOL tech support, or bank teller, etc--these are the vast majority of "service" jobs. Edit: Oh, and I think it's important to add that manufacturing is already a very small part of the US economy. [ January 19, 2003, 08:12 PM: Message edited by: Lumbergh ] -
American view of the Eastern Front
Lumbergh replied to Hans's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
The image of the US as a self contained, prosperous economic entity is ridiculous. The US is so prosperous because of it's involvement in other countries, economically and culturally. Those '2%' (which of course in reality is far larger) allow you to sustain your standard of living. For example, where exactly do you think the majority of your oil comes from? Texas?</font> -

Dude, leave the Simpsons alone, ok man? Pointless??? Banal?????? What do you watch for fun, "Yes Minister"? I think it can be argued successfully that, for those who reall love it, the Simpsons represents a pastime that is at least as intellectually nuanced as CMBB, let alone has much wider appeal and certainly has more cultural significance. Perhaps I just belong to a younger generation, but I think that love of witty, cynical television and slightly-strange-definitely-ubernerdy military history can exist together. Dude. -
Whats next under garments of the Waffen SS ?
Lumbergh replied to Hannibal's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Perhaps. But since most of these books, models, toys, etc etc are sold to German fetishists in the US, I think the German-Soviet confrontation is not the driving force, rather the US-German confrontation. At the end of the day, most of this german-love comes not from something nefarious but more from the fact that their army looked so darn cool. Cool looking tanks, snappy uniforms, heck, they even have zimmerit. Compare with the clunky US Army (and notice how the modern US Army looks more like WWII Germans than Americans). With air forces, we have the opposite. American/British planes were just so darn sexy that these guys can't resist them. Nothing will ever outsell a model of or book on P-51s, just like nothing will outsell a model of or a book on Tigers. -
So will and IS-2 retreat when confronted with a gamey truck rush????
