  1. Sort of a bit of off topic, but don't you think it's wonderful that we, the following generations, can sit together on a forum, descendants of former adversaries, and share our memories and love for a game in peace and harmony? *gets suddenly all mushy* [EDIT: Difficult time typing. ] [ October 15, 2002, 12:18 PM: Message edited by: Sytass ]
  2. As for the girls, just speak for yourself, there are plenty of pretty ladies around. I'm from Itzehoe which should, after all, ring at least a slight bell for every Holsteinian (human, not animal).
  3. Ok, it has been an issue before that when players with the German and the US version want to set up a PBEM game the US player has to start, because if the German player starts the game, the US version cannot load it. And so I played a happy game via PBEM, and when it was over we started another one. We could buy units, get our first move done, and with the 2nd turn, when I (German version) want to load the PBEM file the game freezes opn the load screen. To make sure, my opponent zipped the PBEM file which I unpacked this morning. Trying to load it gives this message in a small window: "Unhandled exception: c0000005 At address: 004304e9" And then the game crashes (abnormal program termination).
  4. Blackhorse, my mother was four at the time of the flight from Pommerania, and she had little memory about it. But from my late grandma I know how perilous that flight was. My father's family was from Braunsberg, Eastern Prussia, and as I said, I know nothing about their flight. My father as well as his parents are dead, and his step-siblings no nothing, either, so no chance of asking.
  5. Personally I'm waiting for Paradox' Hearts of Iron. No I'm not really waiting, because I'm one of the lucky ones in the beta test. Here's a link to their forum. I played the demo of Strategic Command, though, but I found it a bit lacking in depth, sort of like a slimmed down version of 360s High Command.
  6. One of my grandfathers died on the Eastern Front. My grandmother wouldn't say on which, she wouldn't speak of the time or of her flight from Eastern Prussia to Holstein. My other grandfather ran away from any kind of work all his life, and so he escaped serving on the front, too. He became a chauffeur for SS brass, and so he ended up coming to Holstein among the entourage of the last government of the Reich under Adm. Dönitz. His family (my mom and her mother) fled before the Red Army from Pommerania reunited with him in Holstein.
  7. Well, CDV has not only made bad games (like Lula...). Cossacks is one of the better and more realistic (sic) RTS games, Sudden Strike wasn't bad, either, if you didn't fall for the claimed historical correctness, American Conquest and Blitzkrieg which are coming up, don't look that bad, either, and I am cheerfully waiting for Cossacks 2 - Napoleonic Wars. I admit that they do have a lot of medicrity in their ranks, too, like Divine Divinity and a number of other games.
  8. Horses? Bah! You can't get good cheese out of a horse! Take pride in those black and white cows, lad!</font>
  9. The German lad from cow-land is right!
  10. Have you ever thought that English is not red fox' first language which is why he types that way? I think it takes courage to do so in a language that one doesn't master fully. Remember me to mock you all whenever I catch you typing/talking German.
  11. The troops advancing further than they should, are they in the line of enemy fire? Then they could be seeking cover...
  12. I have played Sudden Strike 1 and 2. In fact, I did a review for Wargamer for the second part. http://www.wargamer.com/reviews/sudden_strike_2/
  13. Also, the selection box around the dug in unit gets smaller, I noticed. I use that for reference from afar, hitting the digging in hotkey a few times to see if a unit is dug in or not.
  14. Great BMP, but I am not sure if it applies itself to the odd "roof"-shape that the barbed wire obstacles have in CM.
  15. My point. I hope that someone who has the mod passes it on to one of the mod sites, or that Tiger does so himself.
  16. Heavy fog, you say? That may be it. Crews sometimes have trouble even on a bright day. When a shell hits your tank, or makes a near miss, you don't always see where it came from. So you'll often button up (reducing sight even more) and scan around. In thck fog it's even more difficult, and eventually, you might see a gun flash, look closer and - voilà, there's a shadow in the fog - "T-34?". Then your StuG maybe has to adjust position as it as no turret to turn... that all takes its time.
  17. I seem to recall from somewhere in the manual that if a unit covers an arc and an enemy threat comes within close range the unit will fire at that unit. However, in that example, the panicked (?) opponents, maybe they were no threat? Or maybe even captured?
  18. Hm, did the Soviets call us Krauts, too? I seem to recall from War and Peace that a popular term at that time (still 140 years later?) was "sausage makers".
  19. Well, my machine runs the UT2003 demo, GTA3, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein at max detail flawlessly, whereas the Stalingrad scenario bogs my system (P-IV 1.8 GHz, 512 MB DDR RAM, GF4 Ti4600) down. However, it has been stated elsewhere that the CM engine was designed so that it would show good performance on older PCs as well, as strategy gamers often don't fight the upgrade war as 3D game enthusiasts do.
  20. Yepp, the links seem to be down. Ah, well, I'm sure they'll be on the usual mod sites soon.
  21. Hm. I've seen that discussion a number of times, so I'll return to the original topic. I've always been more interested in the Eastern Front than in the North Africa or Western Front campaigns, so CMBB is heavensent as there are few good tactical games on the topic (Eastern Front 2 comes to mind). I think I will go back to CMBO now and then, but for the time being I will remain in the East.
  22. I also saw the game on Ebay Germany... listed as a Tactical Shooter/3D Shooter... if someone goes with that expectation into the game it's no wonder they sell it. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2058777670 [EDIT: meant "3D shooter", not "2D".... ] [ October 07, 2002, 02:25 AM: Message edited by: Sytass ]
  23. Keeping distances between the vehicles, e.g. having the ones further behind wait 10 seconds is something I never even thought of. Good hint! What I find a bit more annoying is when you plot, say, 15 vehicles to move, and have all their movement paths displayed - I often times forget one which blocks all the others when they try moving past. (I go to overhead view as it's easiers to follow the road line in bird's eye.)I've taken to disable the display of all move lines and then select every single vehicle twice to make sure I haven't forgotten one.
