  1. I dont think anyone is arguing that the side that has complete air superiority shouldn't run wild. My problem is that the Germans can run wild with only a moderate supperiority in the air. At L1 jets, the German Luftwaffe completely outclasses other airforces that only lag by one level. The worst example is the American airforce that seems to take a beating from the Germans even with equal numbers and tech level. Maybe I have had a very unlucky string of roles but I do sense a pattern. This is all probably just a matter of degrees and can never be perfectly equalized with a patch; suffice it to say that the current system is workable in the abstract.
  2. I was so impressed I had to say it twice. DOH!
  3. Exceptionally articulated. [ September 10, 2002, 11:31 PM: Message edited by: Sol Invictus ]
  4. Agreed, the Russians always melt in the withering furnace of the Luftwaffe jet assault. The only thing they can do with their airforce is hide it in the rear to use against the Finns later or sell it for scrap so as to by more fodder for the Luftwaffe. I wish the Russians had some hope of having a fairly good airforce around mid '43 but it usually doesnt work out that way. They are usually just cranking out corps for self preservasion. 5. Jeff, just make sure you invest in reallllly long range rocketry and you will be fine.
  6. I can live with the whole Tech system without to much heartburn except for the damn German Luftwaffe. Airpower is so devastating and it is very easy for the German to get jets early if he so desires. The best course for the poor Russian is simply to cash out his entire airforce before the German eats it up or to hide it all to use later on the Finns. I dont do this as a personal rule because it is gamey, but I couldnt blame someone else who did. Same thing for the French; I have sold off the airforce so as to get an HQ but this too is gamey. Maybe there should be some limit as to how many air units can attack a single unit in a turn. Being able to use 6 airfleets on a unit in a single turn just doesnt seem right. I realize that what may seem like a minor change can have a major impact on other aspects of the game balance, so I just hope that over time the game slowly evolves toward a more realistic representation of WW2 and some of the abstraction goes by the wayside. As for me, I can only think of a few things I would like changed; weather added, some type of Tech limitations, Med Theatre enhancement, refining amphibious invasions, and a more abstract Naval Strategic Warfare system. I'm sure I'm forgeting something and everyone else has their own ideas but I am encouraged that Hubert has made such a gem of a game and has shown a great willingness to listen to others ideas and as far as is possible, implement them. Thanks again Hubert.
  7. Had to put my son to bed and couldnt finish my thoughts. The main problem with amphibious invasions as I see it are twofold. First, there is no way to achieve suprise since you have to park the landing craft off the coast for one turn before they can land. This is all the time needed for the German to throw a few corps onto the beaches and at a minimum, split your invasion force into separate sections. Second, there is an absolute need to capture a port very soon after the invasion and this is very hard to do. Should be impossible in the first couple of turns unless the German is sleeping. I think 1.4 might partially fix this if I'm reading it right. Otherwise, the Allies need some way to supply the invasion minus a port, i.e. a Mulberry, after the first turn of the landing. Add this and a few hexes in N. Africa and we're on our way to making this great game better. Not saying an amphibious invasion should be a cakewalk but it needs some streamlining.
  8. I'm going through the hell of a D-Day landing at the moment in a PBEM game. I tried to do a quickie mid '42 sneak attack and am in the process of losing what was a very tight game. Poor execution; I accidently attacked with an army before I moved it off the beach thereby not leaving my HQ any room to land and leaving my whole force out of supply the next turn, DOH, and minimal air cover. Hoped that the element of surprise would tip the balance; it didnt. Thats all my fault but I do think that a 3rd Reich type of beach assault would be much better and realistic and solve the problems that have been mentioned. As it is the game does an exceptable job of it but I feel it could do better. Quit laughing Titan; I hear you.
  9. Possibly allowing the operational deployment of land units from England to Egypt might somewhat solve the problem, that and adding a row of hexes in the desert. As it is now, N. Africa just doesnt get any respect, between two humans at least.
  10. My spies see everything you are doing Titan.
  11. The only pattern I have noticed is that if Germany attacks Sweden then America will almost immediately declare war. Russia is a little more difficult and the randomness can swing qite a bit.
  12. Excellent save Hubert. Keep up the great work; after a little sleep of course.
  13. I played one turn of a PBEM game with 1.3 and it went fine. It wasnt a very intensive turn but there was some slight combat. I guess I will know after a few more turns.
  14. The art of communication is a very difficult one indeed. Hell, your not older than me by much I'm guessing. I like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the Sex Pistols as well, but using common courtesy never goes out of style. Post calmly and you will get a calm response.
  15. mincks, I think you are manic depressive. Just post calmly and reasonably and you will find that everyone will play nice. I also agree with your post; gasp.
  16. I'm just glad I'm not you since I'm having a ripping good time with the game. I'm using I'm alot in this post. If you have a legitimate complaint I'm sure it will be taken care of if that is what you desire.
  17. Titan, I asked Hubert about that and he said that it wasnt required for both players to have 1.3 but it was preferable. I have already DLed 1.3 so it would be best if you did it as well. I am sure it will improve the fighting performance of the Royal Navy. Hopefully we can get several turns in tonight, we were rocking a few nights ago and it was great.
  18. I am in the middle of a PBEM game and I need to know whether both of us need to patch to 1.3 to continue or if only one of us has patched can we still play?
  19. Welsh, I'd have to say Russian blood and American treasure won the war.
  20. First point; CAPS LOCK; know it, use it. Second point, I'm guessing your trying to rush things a bit and not pacing yourself, but it's just a guess. Set specific goals and concentrate on those goals without getting distracted. Keep playing and you will do fine.
  21. Wagner, sounds like our wishlists are identical. I pre-ordered ACW4 as well and I'm closely watching for Napoleonic Wars. Medieval Total war went Gold today and all these other great military games either out, or soon to be; it's a great time to be a wargammer.
