  1. If i'm not mistaken, which I usually am, thumbs.db is actually a little file about thumbnails. I don't have a mac so i'm guesstilating but when you are viewing a directory on a mac any picture file may show an extremely small picture as it's icon, and the mac would make a little file to store these mini-pics. When I use to use PaintShopPro it would do something very similar. I'm probably wrong .. but hey .. that's normal. Wamphyri
  2. Hmm.. that's an interesting issue your getting. I guess one of the questions I would ask is does this only effect cmbb or do you get slowdown etc with every and any game you try? also do you get slow downs with running windows aplications. Either way i'd say make sure your device drivers for the wireless nic being the absolute latest ones.. there may have been some conflicting issue that the latest drivers can fix. It sounds like your issues are specifically due to the wireless side so I wouldn't bother trying to mess around with spyware and all that jazz.. If you can disable the NIC and everythign speeds up again maybe a quick fix would be to have windows show the little icon in the task bar so you can easily disable it and re-enable it as your needs see fit. Now .. if your using a mac .. umm .. ignore all the stuff about windows.. and .. umm .. yeh!! ps. Many smillies were eaten and devoured and otherwise mis-used during the making of this public broadcast .. death to smoochie.. err .. smiley. or sumfink
  3. Some very good post in responce to this question. And I don't realy have much to add to this topic but I remember seeing a history channel show on this exact same topic and decided to add what wasn't said already. Movement, someone mentioned in an earlier post about the trenchs in ww1, in ww2 the battles were always moving(not all obviously) so by the time you get gas setup and deployed your enemies aren't were they should be. The show also mentioned about a few time that gas was used during ww2. The one I remember was a battle that happened in Italy. The italians were defending a city were the advance had to come through a valley due to mountains. They had setup a trench like barricade and had been fighting behind it for a long time and had been very succesful in holding the germans off. The germans deployed gas against this trench killin the defenders. (perhaps a grog could help me with this story .. I don't remember the specifics and my info here could be wrong) wamphyri
  4. Winfield? Beiseker? Oyen? Hardisty? Balzac? Black Diamond? Turner Valley?</font>
  5. Hmm .. I got my copy in 2.5 weeks .. and i live in some little town in the middle of no-where here in Alberta. CMBB .. YaY ps. no customs for me
  6. In regards to your question about squads .. No. With the editor when you place a unit it's always at full strength. However, in CMBB you can have understrength units .. so technically you could do that with CMBB. But, I wouldn't recomend that approach .. as the game is setup to think of a unit as a squad and not a single soldier.
  7. Hey Rob, No it's not unfotunately. You'll only get snowy ground in a QB when you pick Snow as the weather. Wamphyri
  8. I just have a simple question that you kings, queens, knights, bishops, rooks, and SSN's (like myself) should be able to easily answer. What kind of tank is on the cover of the CMBO manual??(also the CMBO background for you unmodded folks out there) Is this an actual tank in a configuration that CMBO doesn't show or is this just an artist rendition. Wamphyri
  9. Not at all .. They just felt that someone was more deserving of the title.. someone who wasn't even able to post a complete set of Rules!! Gah .. even us SSN's know better than that.. you're letting mayhem spread .. {runs for cover} Wamphyri [ August 26, 2002, 11:51 PM: Message edited by: wamphyri ]
  10. Probly not but it's to keep SSN's like myself from posting and expecting a NON-PENGUINITE response! Wamphyri
  11. Hey, This is more of a topic for the GROGS out there. Basically, I was wondering if tanks are modeled the same way in the higher-end(CMBO,panzer elite(I think), steel panthers), as far as it's stength/weaknesses, armor, armor penetration, etc.. I downloaded the Panzer elite demo and after playin that it got me thinkin about all this. I was in a m4a3 and had to shoot at tanks many more times to achieve a kill than the same tank does in CMBO against the same tank. And this wasn't counting misses. Anyone have some insight about this?? Is CMBO the most accurate? Wamphyri
  12. Perhaps you could be of a little assistance. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by Sod Off, so could you perhaps Sod Off so as to give mean understanding of what your mean. Unless of course your speaking of Sod.. the grass equivilent of Sod Off. We derive with problems if that was your meaning, rarely do you take sod off, at least I have never heard of anyone taking sod off. Although, if you work for a sod farm then there's a 99% more chance of you taking sod off than putting sod on, I could be wrong on this as i have never worked at a sod farm. Speaking of sod, imagine if french ppl had been using sod back during WW2, they'd be might annoyed at having spent all that money just to have a few tanks roll over it. However, Speedy, if your Sod Off was directed towards me in the true CESSPOOL then I implore you to think of something a little more witty than that if you intend to shut me up. If your not up to that kind of challenge, as we all know that your a defective test-tube baby, then i'd be happy to show you the err' of your ways!!!!!! Wamphyri
  13. Look on the bright side Dalem, he could be one of those freaks that has 150 cats in his house. Instead of a few choice words going back and forth you'd get a few choice words and a nice smell when the wind blew the wrong way. Wamphyri
  14. I feel that this is the perfect place to put my exprience with this game into perspective. Until about one montu ago I had never heard of this game in my life, until I was cruisin one of those gaming info sites that sent me to battlefront.com with info about strategic commands release. And that's when I saw it .. at first glance it looked like a ww2 RTS. Now I know that RTS isn't a term that ppl can use around here and live to talk about it.. especially in the Peng threads. But that's what we usually get these days.. RTS games that have units from specific era's(all rts games are the same .. it's just the units that are different.. PROVE ME WRONG =D ), and wargames/stragegy games that are more complex than tryin to code in C++. Then we have this wonderful forum. I had found the demo and started playin it. Now for someone who isn't familiar with the grogismâ„¢ of WW2 this game can seem like any other ww2 wargame, hard and complex. But after a few small post to this board, and reading that great anthology of posts I was finally able to beat the computer and now I have a hard time losing to it on QB's. To make a long story even longer!! I played the demo for 1 day.. 1 DAY. Then I quickly logged on and ordered the game off their website. Oh sure it takes 2-3 weeks to get here to good ol alberta, canada , but playin the demo over and over was a good way to get used to the interface, get to know the units and what their capable of, and just getting a feel for the game in general. So... to wrap it all up. I'm no Grog.. and don't think i'll ever be but this game is the best damn game in the world and i'll be playin it till the end of time along with CMBB!!! Stay cool everyone!! Wamphyri PS .. General Tacticus .. your tanks are mine!!!
  15. Hmm .. I remember reading something about this. Said something about how they have a new creditcard processing system now that can't handle pre-orders. Don't hold me up to that.. just thought I read it somewhere. Wamphyri [ August 12, 2002, 09:51 PM: Message edited by: wamphyri ]
  16. My brother has had DSL for about 3 years now and his IP has stayed the same the entire time. Which is good cause it'd realy screw up his website!!
  17. Those SS's are awesome. Great job on CMBB so far .. the wait will be worth it. The one thing I would like to see is a screenshot of a tank firing, the firing effect in CMBO just doesn't look that great. Also, while i'm wishing, i'd love to be able to hold down the middle mouse button and move the mouse to be able to rotate/pitch the camera, plus having the mouse wheel zoom in and out. Wamphyri ps. If there is a SS of that or info on the mouse thing elsewhere accept my appology.. I can't seen to be able to keep up with all the post in this place =)
  18. Hey all, I've only had CMBO for 4 days now, and this game is awesome. I've been playin the demo for the last 3 weeks while I waited for the game to come in the mail. And, I realize now just poor a substitute the demo was to the real game. Ive read a ton of post about tactics, i've read everypost in the anthology of useful posts, i've read the manual twice just in case I missed anything, heck .. I even read a few of the peng posts, and after a week of therapy i'm ready to continue my life!! The manual was able to answer all of my questions that i had before I got the game .. but now that i have the game and played a few scenarios I have a question or 3 million that I couldn't find an answer to anywhere else. Situation: I was playing "A walk in Paris" scenario. This scenario was realy good in teachin me just how fragile sherman tanks are(Till I got this game I had only played panzer general 3 : scorched earth. is it just me or are soviet tanks better than shermans?? any info for an aspiring general anyone?). The probelm I was facing is that if I move my main body of infantry along the big roadway(selected a platoon and gave a move order) they would end up moving from building to building. They'd go into a building, head in the direction I asked of them originally, and when they got to the wall between the building their in and the next they'd run outside the building and into the next one. All when I ordered them to run along the road. Makes for quite the time consuming advancement, especially when this scenario is geared more towards tank battles. Any suggestions on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Wamphyri
  19. allo all, I'd thought i'd give my 2cents on this issue. Im from the camp that believes that using a no-cd crack/patch, for personal use, is OK. Now I know many of you completely dissagree with this, and I don't blame you, but I have a few reason for my view. First, almost all cd burners you can buy these days are capable of doing an exact copy of any game, these copies have all the info on the cd intact that makes the game think it's an original cd, thus ruling out the need for even a no-cd crack for piracy purposes. Second, I HATE CD's =). I get annoyed realy easily when I wana play a game and I gota remove a cd .. find a place for it .. put the new cd in. Then in .5 hour i'm all done playing and wana play something else .. I gota rinse and repeat. kind of a pet peeve for me. I have no-cd cracks for every game I own (all 40+ of them). Now, I fully understand that the copy protections are on there to help protect a companies product from potential piracy, and I am in no way condoning(sp?) the use of cracks for piracy purposes. However, for a power computer user like me swaping cd's in and out all the time is a real thorn in my side. Anyhoo .. that's my 2cents on the subject. And from someone who got CMBO 2 days ago .. this game rocks. Wamphyri
  20. Thanks for all the posts guys!! I'm still eagerly awaiting my copy of CM:BO .. I think another week and I'll have it in hand. There's been a few questions that i've had but i'll wait till I have the manual to ask them .. the answer's most likely in the manual. As far as mods .. I've been downloading like mad. over the last 4 days i've downloaded 1 gig of stuff .. not too shabby for my 28.8 modem. Don't tell MadMatt tho .. i've been leaching the combatmission.com ftp.. didn't think it'd be too big a problem since my transfer's so darn slow. With luck i'll have everything by the time I have the game. I've also been reading a ton of posts here .. soo much info to read .. so little time. But I gota admit, the info has helped alot, i've finally been able to win in the demo without giving myself an advantage. Do some killin for me!! wamphyri
  21. Gonzo .. BWT: I don't have any Girlfriend or wife yet so i'm free from that kinda harassment. Suggest away
  22. Gonzo: Thanks for the post .. if you have any suggestions about what books I should read i'll follow them. I've played soo many wargames/RTS games that I feel ready but we all know that RTS knowledge leads you down a false road .. i'd be beat so fast if I used my kung-fu against any of you guys.. even if I played agianst the computer(as the demo shows). I don't have any knowledge about proper infantry tactics (cover etc), or about how best to utilize Armor/non-armor units. So anything you guys have to suggest would be greatly appreciated. Wamphyri!!
  23. LOL .. hehe .. i'm not from edmonton.. i'm not an oil worker .. I lived in calgary for a few years... but i'm about 10 minutes south of lethbridge.. been almost most places in my province but prefere the small town/ rural life to any big city! =) Wamphyri
  24. OMG .. I place a post on a forum for a 2 year old game and I have 3 replies within 15 minutes . . thats amazing. I now feel that I picked the right game to purchase, i know i won't be disappointed if it has this kind of support from it's players. I hope to play a few of you in MP games even if I know it's a lost cause. What better way to learn then by losing. (maybe that was hitler's reasoning behind the blitzkrieg( he didn't want gas attacks halting his advance), he was in the infantry(in think!) during WW1)(any errors in my info can be blamed on the discovery channel.. ) Hope to lose to you soon .. 25. Hello, I'm completely new to CM and all I can say is WoW!!!!!! I'm only 24 years old (my understanding is that most WW2 sim adicts are older, older than me =) anyways) and love playing WW2 sims. I just recently found the CM website and after playing the demo ordered it online. I live in Alberta, Canada so a Web/Europe only sold game doesn't get much attention here. But like I said i'm an avid WW2 game player. You name it i've played it, although only a few games appealed to me. And i'm interested by all facets of the WW2 era ( air, land, Sea). And after playing the demo and reading reviews I had to order it online. This is the kind of game that panzer General 3 wishes it could be(my prev. fav.). And I hate to see how great it is after i'm done leaching the whole Combat Mission FTP site.. and i don't even have the game yet. I'm surprised I haven't been banned yet. me and my 28.8 modem (damn the contry and it's million dollar high speed internet(I live in the country so I can only get dial-up(28.8) for $20 or satelite(40k/s) for $70 plus a $300 setup fee) However, I'm not very skilled at the arts of war. I blame this on all the RTS games that are out there . It's sad when I can only win on the demo when I set my side to have a 200% advantage . So any tutorials, kicks in the ass, etc... would realy help. Especially after reading a few AAF's my WW2 Kung-Fu is realy weak. No wonder I keep loosing most WW2 games I play (SH1/2 not incuded .. my sub ninja's rule). So, I hope I've fully introduced myself As the newest member to play CM.. and I hope that I can live up to your examples for when CMBB comes out(can't wait.. wamphyri <--- is an eye candy freak). Wamphyri BTW .. Stay Cool [ July 20, 2002, 01:16 AM: Message edited by: wamphyri ]
