  1. When I think on the subject it really is interesting what we know now vs back during the war. The common ground pounder or tank commander didn't know how badly the german tanks were versus the soviet heavies. I don't know how much info was shared back then but I doubt anything got down to the fighting troops, certainly not in the way we know it now. Thinking of it like that, it's only word of mouth and personal experience that defines a troopers reaction to any target. They were just men reacting to something that wanted to kill them, and fear is the biggest reactionary of them all. I'm sure command tried to belay their fears with information and rationaliztion but even in this "modern" world, sensationalization is just as bad now and nothing I hear or read about is trying to kill me. So I can understand why many fighting men thought the tiger was the worst. It's what they knew and they only heard the bad about it, not the good. Just my 2 cents
  2. I've been wondering about this for some time since I started playing CMBN and CMBS. The question is quite simple really, would small arms from todays armies have an easier time penetrating something that took a HMG or more to penetrate?
  3. I didn't quite do it right.. but what a nice picture that is!
  4. Just finished watching all 12 episodes. Not a bad anime. The surprising thing is that my wife was big time into it. When the Maus shows itself she clutched my arm and said "what are they going to do, that things too big. Where is it's weak spot". Perhaps phase one of operation "get the wife into my games" has just won a small victory.
  5. I could sure use them right now. I'm really enjoying Montebourg, only on mission 3. I'm not very good tho lol.
  6. I'm not even sure how I heard of it. At the time that I found it and checked out the demo I was huge into the MMO Dark Age of Camelot. CMBO was unlike anything I had ever heard of and has kept my interest ever since. I tried to sell my friends on CMBO but they were much too twitchy and couldn't handle how in depth CMBO was at that time compared to anything else.
  7. Thanks slim, I'll check them out when I have a free second. I took some of the advice on here and played a number of QB's, these proved successful with giving me the experience when it came to dealing with unexpected surprises. One QB had me going over the crest of a hill without any cover right from the start point, and due to an error on my part the enemy had 3 flakverlings and I only had infantry. Minor victory for me, didn't think I'd pull it off since the first 10 minutes were not in my favor. I've also been watching some videos by armchairgeneral(.com?). These have been a good help in trying to better understand the bigger picture and thinking of where I should place guys to be most effective. I still may not be very good but I'm getting better. I did start the campaign over again, just finished the second mission with a total victory both the first and second. Nice thing is that the units on the second mission were in different spots so it plays nothing like the first time and gave me a whole new challenge. Having fun, just never have enough time to play.. crazy ol' life gets in the way.
  8. edited as issue has been solved.. YAY!
  9. does it happen with either alt keys? I've found that the windows key + T does something but not anything for alt+t
  10. I agree with all of this. I'd just add that graphically CoH is really good looking and that might sway some people.
  11. You won't technically need to reinstall it again. In the directory that z-bee's mod manager gets installed (C:\Program Files (x86)\zBee14 on my machine) will be a file called "z-Bee 1.4 CMSF Mod Manager.accdr". The mod manager is just a microsoft access database, so if you make a copy of this file you can set the second copy up for CMBN, each file is a completely separate database(making each file a completely separate mod manager). This can be done as many times as you want, one for each CM game. I just renamed the copies to what game I was going to use that file for then setup an icon for it. Edit- forgot to add that the copy will have the settings saved from the original file as well as the mods installed. The directories you will need to change first, then for the mods you can deactivate them each, then remove them from the mod list. Without changing the directories first you'll deactivate the mods in CMSF, if you change the directories first then deactivate a mod it'll say that the mod wasn't found in the z folder(this is what we want to see) advanced computer user - you can open z-Bee14CMSFModManager.msi (the install file for the mod manager) using 7-zip and it'll have the original database file, which can then be extracted where you want
  12. Good idea. Doing some practice QB's in bocage assaulting a town would be a good way to get everything figured out.
  13. Right you are, didn't have any off map artillery left for this one. I finished it second time through with only 5 men killed, not bad. I had finished it once before as I said but the town fight was a mess and my second time through would have been a mess if it wasn't for the advice here. I went about it a little bit different this time. I studied the terrain and window placement of the buildings, as well as the doors. This helped me determine what attack angles the germans had from the buildings, this made me realize that I could get a machine gun up the small strip along the one side then I could park my HMG on the road and none of the buildings would have LOS to him. I used a platoon as support and got it where it needed to be, now anyone running across the road was getting cut down as my main force advanced. I used lots of suppression like everyone said and it worked well. I found that the heavy fire would often cause them to break and run (to be cut down by my HMG). I just slowly advanced one building at a time and used this as a learning exercise. Only issue is I probably used a little more ammo then I should have which will make the next mission interesting.
  14. That was a good article. I had been using suppression at most points during the attack but for the house to house fighting I surely wasn't doing it properly or often enough. Add that to the fact I was doing russian wave style attacks on the houses thinking the greater firepower up close would be better, but that just creates more targets. Next try I'm going to use more scouting elements while having a suppression force covering their movement.
  15. hey all, I'm fairly new to CMBN and am going through the campaign "The Road to Montebourg". I'm currently on the third mission, the first 2 gave me no end of trouble. I'm not proud of it but I restarted from a save midway through on each when things went south. Now on the third mission, although it's small and I have a fairly sizable force I'm having issues when I get to the town. I can get to it without any casualties but once there it ends up being a gong show. I'll be taking fire from somewhere, don't know where, my guys are dying and I haven't spotted anything. Near as I could figure out is having to go house to house and clearing them out one by one. But I can't figure out any way to lower my casualties since the only way to get anyone into a position to fire on any of the houses with enemies is to put them in a position where they would get fired on.. thus enhancing the blood shed. Plus, you never really know where they are until someone gets shot at, keeping me guessing as to safe avenues of approach. I did finish it once already but only got a draw.. I had too many casualties. What am I missing in my tactics that would have allowed me to capture this little town? For those wondering, this is an infantry only map, 3 onboard 60mm mortars, no artillery, 4 HMG.
  16. this may be a bit drastic.. but can you replace the stock ones? unpack the brz's that came with the game, replace, then repack. Or does the game fail to load if you mess with the main brz files?
  17. In waiting for the next iteration of this XAR I'll chime in quickly on the subject that seems to have cropped up. There has been a bit of talk recently about how lead from gasoline had caused crime rates to rise. Accourding to the study done, the rise and fall of crime rates has followed lead exposure with a 20 year lag, so now that lead has been removed from gasoline many years ago the crime rate has been declining. Here is a report on the whole thing. The graph near the end is interesting. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27067615
  18. I've decided to go big and get the "BIG Complete Edition Bundle" of CMBN, we're just going to keep this little expense from the wife. One way or another I'd end up wanting to get it and in a month or 2 I'll end up getting RT anyways. Time to get my PBEM on!
  19. You all make very compelling arguments. I have a few more days yet until I get paid so I'll be playing CMBN and italy demo's to at least get a little bit of CM in while I weigh my options.
  20. Hey all, Used to play CMBO and CMBB. Now after many years I'm rediscovering my love for the games and want to get one of the CMx2 games. I've been reading over the forums and website about the difference between the 3 games and their expansions. I just can't decide which way is the better way to go. I do prefer the western front so have been looking at CMBN, if I wanted all the bells and whistles then I'd want to get the 2.0 upgrade and the expansions, which would be a little heavy on my pocket book. Or I could get the latest and greatest with CMRT and not have to worry about upgrading etc and it would be easier on my bank roll, just not huge into the eastern front or italy. (did italy get a 2.0 upgrade?) Is there as huge a difference between the 3 games as there was between BO,BB,AK? I downloaded the CMBN and CMFI demo's and have been enjoying myself. CMTouch gave me the fever to play again, it's fun to have a good tactical touch game. Personal opinions and advice welcome
