  1. One thing I found, if you use the terrain graphics mod, the red arrow jump points for the Suez Canal loop do not show up....best to keep it with original terrain for now.... I'm referring to the mod which gives the texured look to the countries, not the symbol or unit graphics [ December 06, 2002, 07:57 PM: Message edited by: J Wagner ]
  2. Thanks...now I have some new challenges for the weekend!
  3. viper, HOI misses a wargame feel because it uses the EU2 game engine...EU2 was not a wargame but a game of expansion, colinization, ect. with a combat feature...I look at HOI the same way....when Brazil can overrun all of South America and Mexico can make inroads into the U.S., what else am I to think? I like the game, but I do not believe it's a WWII sim...
  4. I guess no one thought someone would want to keep Poland active because of the need for the plunder...
  5. General Billote, did you by chance post this on the Paradox message board?...this is such a common complaint there that you would be viewed as a live saver among the masses!
  6. I've said this before...put Hubert's SC components onto the World in Flames map, and many of us will be in heaven!
  7. I notice that you were able to insert the Garibaldi HQ unit in the 1/2 hex south of Tobruk, even though normal movement is prohibited in that hex... interesting anamoly...too bad the map restricts movement there...as mentioned a million times here, this needs to be fixed....
  8. I don't mean to offend anyone, but there are simply too many non SC topics popping up here lately...that is what the General Discussion Board is for, so how about we all start using it....I make this an issue for a very simple reason, valid SC topics are quickly being pushed off the front page and buried because of the influx of these non SC topics..if I want to know people's favorite movies, games, shoe size ect, I'll troll along the GD forum...I have been guilty of responding to these topics here on the SC board so I'm a contributor to the problem therefore this will be my last non SC post on this board..I hope others follow suit...thank you for your attention to this matter...flame away if you feel the need! 9. If it plays like EU, you will only be playing one country so it is not as daunting as it sounds. For example, as Germany, you may form alliances with Italy and Japan but that does not mean you need to flit all over the map managing these countries as well as your own. They will go about their AI business as you go about yours, offering assistance when there is common need. At least, I hope this is how the game will be. If I in fact have to manage all the countries I have formed alliances with, then I may take a pass on the game. As far as the time scale, EU covers centuries and it really does not take that long to play a scenario out. You pause the game, issue all your orders, then let the game speed ahead as you watch your orders play out. There are various speeds you can choose from which can allow you to watch events unfold at a crawling or quicksilver pace. Even though it is in real time, there is an ability to manage all your orders in pause mode, before you execute them, similar to Combat Mission, though you do have the ability to make changes while the time is running. 10. Thanks for the info. [ October 31, 2002, 07:44 PM: Message edited by: J Wagner ]
  11. I just wonder, if realistically, all these options we discuss can be "toggleable". I would think that programming such diverse options would be tantamount to designing two completlely different game engines and that switching only certain facets of it on and off would be difficult. Perhaps someone more learned than myself can provide more information as to the feasibility of actually having these suggestions as options and not hard programmed into the game. It seems to me, that whenever a heated debate developes over a specific feature request, we all tend to fall back on the "let's make it toggleable" party line, in order to appease all parties. I wonder however if throwing that option out there amounts to nothing more than spitting into the wind. [ October 31, 2002, 04:51 PM: Message edited by: J Wagner ]
  12. Here is a thread where this is discussed and Hubert provided a reply: http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=000966
  13. I would like to know an effective strategy for the two U boats in the North Atlantic in the '39 campaign. I'm forever losing them to the British fleet after only a few turns. Do you keep them out of harms way for a period of time before using them to disrupt trade? It seems the earlier I use them, the quicker they are wiped out....any suggestions?
  14. This once again brings up the oft discussed topics of complexity and game scale...If you were to use the Operational Art of War game scale for SC, it would be quite a mammoth map indeed...check out the France 1940 OAW scenario and you will swear you are playing AH's board game....though I would like to see the map made a bit larger, I'm not certain I would want it on a OAW scale....that may make the game a bit too daunting to complete...while I want to see a bit more complexity and detail in the game, I don't think I want to go that far...give me a few more hex rows in North Africa and Scandinavia, weekly or bi weekly turns with regional weather effects, and I will be satisfied with that for now..
  15. I just want to add my two cents here by saying that I did indeed hope to find Strategic Command filling my A3R board game needs and found that it came up a bit short. But then I looked anew at the actual pc version of Third Reich and, realizing just how bad it is, appreciated SC more than I initially did. Since I concentrate with games against the AI, I need to realize that there are still some limitations to what it can do. Hopefully SCII will take us one step closer towards reliving are A3R board gaming days but this then brings up the old debate of whether or not you want to increase the complexity of SC. Many are happy with seeing it remain a "beer and pretzels" game while others ( including myself) want more complexity added. [ October 19, 2002, 01:48 PM: Message edited by: J Wagner ]
  16. You ever go to chat rooms? What Immer said is 100% correct. Without the ability to hear and sense inflections, you may end up putting your foot (or keyboard) in your mouth without fully understanding why.
  17. A common mistake whan launching a Russian Offensive is to attack simultaneously all along the front. You usually will not have enough units to cover any effective breakthroughs so you will indeed face a WWI type slugfest. The key is to develope a strategy where you mass units in one or two fronts, whether it be north, center, or south, and punch a hole in the Russian line, then flood your reserve units through, flanking and encircling along the way. You simply launch minor attacks along the static portion of your line, making smaller advances and draining Russian MMP's. I have seen many Russian units retreat during these attacks, giving up real estate for time so this strategy does happen in the game. Having said this however, I do support the idea of movement after combat to occupy the hex after a unit is eliminated, and movement after combat if the unit had not previously moved. 18. Out of the Park...it's a very good baseball management sim....if you want to check it out, here is the link: http://www.ootp4.com/
  19. That's a good point sogard...there was an earlier thread wondering about the quality of the boards lately and I brought up how the mood tends to change in the forums after a game has been out for some time....hell, I'm even guilty of posting a rather overlong and old joke in a recent topic thread...there are always good posts and posters which increase the enjoyment of the game, but since Malleus bought the game now, many of the good topics are buried in pages past...he has an attitude that he does not suffer fools lightly, but unfortunately, he never applies this to himself...had he the patience to search these boards for the informative posts (something he always accuses OOTP newbies of not doing) he would have been supplied with enough information to make his gaming experience more pleasurable... Oh...and if there is the oft chance that this Malleus is not the OOTP Malleus, then, though I have erred, I feel the points still apply. [ October 17, 2002, 02:22 PM: Message edited by: J Wagner ]
  20. Ahhh...Malleus....nice to see you..ironically, the reasons you state are exactly why I left your beloved OOTP boards and haven't returned all these many months..... so I can't argue your beliefs since I feel the same way about the OOTP community...though there was a time when those forums were great too.....
  21. Frank Sinatra is in Vatican City. He tells his agent that he wants to go visit the Pope. His agent says: "It's not easy to meet the Pope. You need to make an appointment way in advance." Sinatra replies: "Hey, I Frank friggin' Sinatra and I want to see the Pope!" His agent, exasperated says: "Look, every morning after Mass, the Pope comes out to the square and visits with the people. Go to the square, stand in front, and when the Pope sees you, he'll greet you and most likely invite you in." Sinatra likes the idea. The next morning, Sinatra is out in the square, and standing next to him is a filthy, smelly, hobo. The Pope comes out ot meet the people and immediatley sees Sinatra. He walks up and as he approaches, Sinatra offers his hand. But suddenly, the Pope walks right past Sinatra, goes up to the Hobo, puts his arm around the bum and whispers softly in his ear. He then moves on. Sinatra is emabarrased and pissed. He sees his agent later in the day and says: "How do you like that! Me, Frank Sinatra, ignored by the Pope so he can talk to some stinking Bum!" His agent pleads: "You have to understand the situation Frank. How would it look for the Pope talking to someone as rich and famous as you, and ignoring a member of the downtrodden. He has sympathy for the poor, you know that. Look, for tomorrow, why don't you dress in dirty rags, don't shave, and look your worse. Stand in the square looking that way. When the Pope sees you, he'll come to you. You tell him who you are, and he'll then invite you into the Vatican." Sinatra likes the idea. The next day, Sinatra looking his absolute worse is standing in the square. The Pope comes out and imediately sees him. The Pope, without hesitation walks up to Sinatra and puts his arm around him. He then whispers in his ear: "Hey! I thought I told you yesterday to get your smelly ass outta here!"
  22. For World War I, check out the game on this site... http://www.adanaccommandstudies.com/IntroTrench.html I'll be purchasing it although I'm not certain when it will be released...........
  23. mwenek: I don't believe the games I mentioned above suffer from the type of paranoia that you are advocating...If it was so easy to do as you say, then high profile and extremely popular games, such as Championship Manager, would never consider such an option. With the use of e- license controls, this fear is not a problem.
  24. Don't know what all the fuss is about here...I downloaded Steel Panthers, Championship Manager, OOTP, PureSim Baseball. It is a viable form of commerce and shouldn't be disregarded so quickly.
