  1. redwolf is correct. If you're on a PC and use any Microsoft mailprogram it's fairly easy to see. Just include size as one of the columns in your inbox view. That is the actual size of the mail after the mailtool has done its thing. Compare it with the size of the zipped file or text file on the disk. Zipped files adds roughly 30% overhead data, which disappears when you save the attachment on the HD. [ June 07, 2002, 06:03 PM: Message edited by: Visom ]
  2. I too would like a keyboard shortcut for the Yes/No choices.
  3. Forgetting about the Normandy Invasion is one thing, blessing american soldiers is another. I don't want to take anything away from the soldiers who charged the beaches, but I would appreciate if you americans could pay more respect to your allies. I honestly think the term 'God bless America' is misplaced on an international forum like this. Sorry for making this general comments about americans, I know there are good ones and bad ones as with all other nationalities.
  4. TB, I'm sure you intend to do this anyway, but please state a deadline with a date for these five games when you have one.
  5. So, can anyone enlighten me on which the most competitive setting is? If I set computer troops quality to high and give it a +3 bonus, will that accomplish anything except giving it more expensive troops or will it actually have quality 1 or 2 levels above elite? I'd say the best setting is low quality troops and a +3 bonus. That'll give it cheap troops but the +3 bonus will have a much bigger impact (Conscript-> Veteran vs Regular-> Elite).
  6. Thought it was a bit too much contrast first. When leaving the forum and the text was still flickering before my eyes I'm sure. It puts too much strain on my eyes, it's not very comfortable at all. I will spend a lot less time here if it's not changed.
  7. I think it is described in Tank aces (Panzer Aces?) about a gunner in a PzIII or PzIV that aims at the gun on a Kv-I after failing to penetrate it from the side at point blank range (30 meters?). I don't have the book, so pls don't ask for more specific references. I might be wrong on this, but in several discussions I've heard that the germans aimed for the weak spots on the side of Shermans. (Not exactly weak spots, but the places for the fuel tank and ammo storage, which caused the Shermans to brew up in case of a penetration.) Again, I can't back it up with any references, but I think it makes sense.
  8. Sorry for bumping, but I want to know if the CPU usage will be 100% in CMBB. (Not asking for explanation or anything, it's just that I need to put some more investigations on my next laptop purchase if this is the case.) A simple yes or no is all I want.
  9. Another idea for future CM releases. I guess it's too much to ask for it in CMBB. Not sure if it belongs to this thread, but at least it's related. It would be nice to have the possibility to specify a video for a scenario, which would be played before purchase, setup or first plot. It would be a good tool to put the players into the right mood for the scenario. It's up to the designer if he wants to include a video or not. It could be a summary of the historic battle, a briefing of events that has lead up to the battle or it could be just as the written briefings, but read by a narrator, it's up to the scenario designer.
  10. Isn't the one turn per mail already said to be included in CMBB? Something along the lines 1) P1: Plots turn 1 2) P2: Plots turn 1 3) P1: Movie turn 1, plot turn 2 4) P2: Movie turn 1, plot turn 2 Repeat step 3 and 4 until end.
  11. Oooh, do you mean first week in June actually means June 1? I was betting on June 7 and then getting the scenarios June 8-10. I need to start preparing the bunker...
  12. I suspect the CPU goes to 100% when I enter the password screen. I'm rather sure it's up before I press play and I know for sure that it's 100% without touching the mouse/keyboard while plotting. Before I press Done after the movie, after I press done and so on. Only time CPU should be 100% is while the turn is processed. I could accept if it was 100% while dragging the lines during plotting as well, but it is all the time. Probably true. My point is that the 100% CPU usage causes problems for laptops because they're more vulnerable to heat. Or is it just HP laptops? Anyway, my question is if it's the same in CMBB, as it'll have some impact on my next PC purchase. [ May 27, 2002, 11:42 AM: Message edited by: Visom ]
  13. Why? CPU usage is what, 5% when I plot my moves, do I need 980 MHz to keep the camera steady? (Oups, sorry, forgot to turn whine mode off.) I don't know much about 3D engines, so you might very well be correct. I just don't see why it should use up all available cycles when it just needs a few. I don't play many games, but CMBO is one of two that has this feature. (The other one is TAO2, an old 2D game). Can't recall problems with MOH or Dungeon Siege. It must be possible to solve it another way, question is if it's worth the hours for BTS? Sorry, the purpose of my post was to ask if the same concept is used in CMBB as in CMBO. If it sounded as an accusation I apologise. I'm not referring to it as a bug or a fault, I would just prefer an alternative way of handling the stuff that eats up all the free cycles if possible. I've tried a few different ones, mostly HP and Toshiba. None can handle 100% for a couple of hours without having their fans working overtime. I'm sure there are exceptions, but my experience is that 100% for an hour will get the temperature up above the recommended max temparature. And even without the heat issue we have the battery issue. Can't play more than 90-120 minutes before they're empty. Thanks for the tip, will try it.
  14. Anyone know if CMBB will use 100% of the CPU power just as CMBO? I'm having problems with my HP laptop, it gets overheated. CMBO is killing the fan and draining the batteries. I've replaced one fan and the second is getting worse. I can play roughly 30 minutes before I must let it cool down. I'd be interested to hear something from BTS regarding if they run any betatests on laptops to find out how long you can play on a laptop before it gets overheated.
  15. CM is not the only application that does this, lots of developers think thay can use the unused CPU cycles without any negative impacts. I wasn't indicating that there is a bug, but it is a killer for laptops because they get overheated.
  16. I rented a car and travelled in Normandy for a week. If you know WWII it's no problem. Don't know anything about the tours, I'm sure they're fine as well. Myself I felt I didn't want to rush my visit. I walked the beaches and felt the sand between my toes. Saving Private Ryan was in my mind when I looked upon the ridge, imagining a firing MG in the remaining nests. It was an overwhelming feeling, I had to sit down. My respect for those who charged the beach grew considerably, what a nightmare. Some nice musuems in the area. At Utah Beach there's one in an old bunker (W5). A few of the roads the engineers built to get off the beach are still there. They carry the name of soldiers who didn't make it off the beach. In St Mere-Eglise there's a museum dedicated to 82nd airborne. The Memorial in Caen is worth a visit as well. If you have the time spend a few days along the beaches, there's a lot of small places dedicated to the beach landings.
  17. I guess I was expecting that but was hoping I had screwed it up. Anyone know if CMBB will be the same?
  18. It seems like CM is using 100% of the CPU when I play it on my laptop. It's a 1 GHz HP with 256 Mb RAM. Don't know the brand of the video card, it's probably lowend but I have no problems playing CM. It's killing my fan and draining the batteries. Seems like it's 100% both during plotting and watching movies (not sure during movies). Any idea what to start looking for or is it normal that CM takes whatever is available in the CPU?
  19. MrSpkr, the tournament starts early June and will last for three months. You play five games at once. You'll still be on the RoW veterans list if you skip this one. Btw, everything you need to know is on the top and the bottom of the first page.
  20. Treeburst, just want to say that you understood my point, which was to avoid the worst case scenarios. Nobody would want to try and fix the schedules to avoid a few 5 day delays, that can't be avoided. As stated before, those minor delays should be taken care of by building a buffer. I think it'll be hard for some persons to build a buffer to cover a 10-12 day delay. Those delays are probably one of the reasons some games will take 120 days, if we can eliminate those the longest games will be reduced (in theory) with 10-12 days.
  21. Regarding vacations, maybe it's possible to specify one or two weeks when we expect to have problems playing CM and then arrange the sections after that? Just to make sure that after we get back from 10 days in the sun all our opponents leave to do the same, creating a 20 day period with no progress. 22. Just for the record in order to clarify things. CM was in retail stores long before CDV came into the picture. Several independant retail stores ordered CM directly from BTS and sells it in their stores. I'm talking about the original 'only on internet' version. It's been available in Sweden for more than a year, but the price tag is hugh (around $100). So, please don't assume that retail version equals CDV version. Edit: An example, a shop in Stockholm which also sells it over the net: http://www.softwareexpress.se/prd1828.htm [ March 19, 2002, 03:35 AM: Message edited by: Visom ]
