  1. Oh yes, the MCSE - I had to do it again for Win2K and I looked back on 10 years of IT work a couple of years ago. But I'm a CISSP in IT security now so perhaps I'm not so up-to-date Phil, I respect your opinions. Anyways, as I said I'm using FSAA 4XS, and IMHO CMBB never looked better, especially with the CMMOS mods. I'm PBEMing Der Manstein Kommt, and I've found no reason to go back to the previously released drivers. I don't really understand your woes since I'm not experiencing any of that at all, apart from a minor slowdown. Just my opinion, but I'd rather go hunting in the Ozarks in a tutti than buy an ATI card after getter burned with their, at the time, appalling driver support. From what I hear, things haven't changed much. I don't want to detract from anyones findings, especially if they're having trouble. Just as a sanity check - I'd be curious if anyone else is running with the 43.45 dets and not finding any major problems with CMBB. Or am I just an isolated case and a bit crazy? Regards
  2. Alright! I'm getting the impression from reading this thread that CMBB is running like a pig with newer dets and these problems are rendering it unplayable for Nvidia card users. Not for me! I'm using an Asus Ti 4200 with 4XS AA turned on, and my card overclocked to 275 x 550. I'm using the 43.45 dets. My CPU is a modest 1.4 MHz Athlon with 512 of RAM and I have an SB Live/value. I'm using Win XP Pro. I recently took a half houir to run a repair/install since XP tends to get porked once in a while when updating drivers, adding new packages and such. The new drivers have slowed the scrolling noticeably with large maps, but not enough to cause a problem for me, and I <CTL> <ESC> a couple of times so I can see text on white backgrounds properly. I don't mind doing this for runing CMBB, since my settings work really nicely with IL-2 FB, the only other game I bother with. If anyone is encountering major Nvidia det problems enough to stop them playing CMBB, then I'd suggest it's time to "refresh" your installation and have enough patience to apply the minor tweaks that I use, and certainly have no problem with. I'm sure, with enough time and patience, these issues will be sorted out by the respective parties, but there is presently no way that they can detract from the immense pleasure I derive from playing CMBB. In closing, I don't wish to sound like a sycophant, but just want to put things in perspective. Regards
  3. Thanks Kingfish, I've already more-or-less written off the housebound truck, although I still give it commands out of curiousity more than anything else. I've diverted another vehicle to come to the rescue, but resources are tight. What would a good battle be without the unexpected! Good point about the spotters. Can't check right now, but I very much doubt the '42 soviets carried around much wireless stuff. Thanks again! Regards
  4. Hi, I'm playing the above campaign PBEM as the soviets. From the onset of this scenarion I've encountered an unsettling problem. In case "the enemy is listening" - ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ There is a truck that was set up inside a single building, and I can't get the bloody thing out to tow an AT gun about 15m away no matter what movement order I try - reverse or move. Can anyone help with this, or explain why this was set up as such. I guess I should have tried to place it during the setup phase, but my opponent and I decided to stick with defaults. Also, there's a jeep that won't accept a spotter team of 2 men although it says it can carry a team. Should it be this way? Of course, this has forced me to improvise, but the more I thnk about it the less I sleep Any help appreciated. Regards
  5. When brewing the best, I alway add Irish moss in the last 10 minutes to settle out some of the stuff undesirable in the final product. This could loosely be referred to as "sea moss" since it is, in fact, a seaweed. Glad to be of help
  6. I believe that Becket is part of the new CMMOS team with MikeT. Please don't bite the hand that feeds. I couldn't care less if you p*** anyone else off with your "can't be bothered" attitide, but do yourself a favour leave the CMMOS guys alone! I'd be happy if you were forever sentenced to looking for mods from the first site you mentioned. Your thread indeed!
  7. Mike, This looks incredible! The mod work alone is excellent (and many, many thanks to the authors) but the way you've put it all together, and obviously the time and effort you've put in, is just amazing. CMMOS rules! Regards
  8. What's with this trolling!? Hasn't this issue been beaten to death - although I'm sure, not to your satisfaction. The only failure I see is in your lack of social skills - you seem to have the inability to get your point across without causing annoyance to others.
  9. Reading all this talk about beer this early in the morning is making me awfully thirsty! This coffee just ain't cutting it.
  10. What, not even a link to Charlie Pappazian's stuff? Homebrewing rules! Regards
  11. Hi, <Edit> Oops - I should have read the first message properly -you've already fixed this so I won't also send the fix and cause possible confusion Part of my message - I've repackaged this and got it working. Just so you know, all I did was change diirt to dirt in the bmp files. Regards [ January 27, 2003, 11:08 PM: Message edited by: Nick Schieben ]
  12. Hi Gordon, A quick note of appreciation from me for all of your excellent work. Warmest thanks to all the CMMOS team! CMMOS has come a long way and has added a lot to my, and many others, enjoyment of CM. All the best with your "real life", and hope you can still drop in from time to time. Regards
  13. Any scenario worthy of a review will get one from me. I've also been going through the included scenarios (which I don't, and perhaps should, comment on)and generated pbem ones. Early in the Steel Panthers says, when I thought (for a couple of months) that I finally was going to get my long lost SL jollies, I converted a few (A)SL scenarios and posted them. A few months later, thanks to a few watchful wargamers, I discovered that a few loathsome individuals had hijacked them and put their names on them. Yes, there are bas$%^ds out there who will actually do that! Too bad, because I really appreciated the feedback I received from these efforts. People do actually take the time to let you know when you've done a good scenario. I believe that the authors' wishes should be respected. They put some time and effort into this, mainly for their and others' enjoyment, and if they want to monitor downloads and comments that's the least we can do for them. I think it unfortunate that the fellow in question walked into the crossfire, because I'm sure he meant well, but perhaps should have tested the water around here before jumping in. Regards
  14. Hmmm, I've been seeing a bit too much of this male sensitivity nonsense on this forum lately. Gentlemen, this is the Ostfront! Now get out there and kick some a#$e. If you want a pillow fight go over to the Barbie site (no, not Klaus!) Regards
  15. I just had a look a my copy of Hitler's Last Bastion again, and it's got about 15 pages on the fall of Koenigsberg. Units mentioned include the 511th Heavy Panzer Btn, 58th ID, 548th ID, 5th PD, 561st VG. The action on 20 Feb is farly scenario-inspiring. BTW Michael, I'd only been to your GD site for CM things, but I had to take a visit after reading your posting. I must say you done some outstanding work on the Grossdeutscland info, and I will heartily recommend your site for anyone seeking information about this unit. Regards
  16. There are some good books out there on Panzer Grenadier Division Grossdeutschland, who fought in this area in the last autumn/winter of the war. Helmuth Spaeter does a several-book history, which I got from Fedorowicz Publishing. Squadron/Signal has a pictorial history with plenty of pictures and maps, by Horst Scheibert. THere is some good coverage of the fighting around Memel in these books. I have a personal interest in the fighting around Koenigsburg, but alas have not found much detailed material due to the stage of the war at that time. There is a book called Hitler's Last Bastion by Kurovitsy (very much the German sideb of things) which describes the final buttles, but unfortunately suffers somewhat in the translation. Hope that helps. Regards
  17. Hi Badger, >>I'm using your current buildings in CMMOS... How do I get the new ones in there, or do I have to wait until thet post a CMMOS compatible version?>> I couldn't wait! Nice work Juju! Use CMMOS to put the default factory back. Make a copy of Juju's original factory file "just in case" Basically, all you need to do is rename the new bmp files as in the old CMMOS file and replace them. Here's what I did: Use CMMOS to put the default factory back. Make a copy of Juju's original factory file "just in case". Unzip the new bmp files into a temp directory and copy/rename them the same as the old ones - copy *???.bmp *_juju.bmp from the command prompt. Go back to eplorer and select your renamed bmps with and <ALT> right click and hit add to zip, selecting the orginal juju_factory_cmmos file and it will update the bmp files. THis works fine in Breakout from Borrisov, which I'm currently playing. My comment - CMMOS is fantastic and the only way to go for me. I'd love to get all those great new mods out there, but I'm waiting until they're converted into CMMOS format, and I've only been using CMMOS so I'm missing out a bit. This was an easy one since it's already in the set, but does anyone know if there's a list of the numbers (I understand Gordon issues these) for future CMMOS mods out there? Is there a need for some help in CMMOS'ing mods? I don't mind pitching in. Regards
  18. Nice one! It's already enhanced my "Breakout at Borrisov" experience. Those old flags were way too big and just stinkin' of PC. Man, I don't know how many different wargames I've done this one on (SL, SP, ToP etc), but this has to be the best!!! Regards
  19. Hey Dingo, Just a suggestion, but copy your cmbb\bmp directory to a cmbb\bmpbak directory. That's what I do, and then it doesn't matter if you overwrite the files cos you can always restore. Next, wander over to the CMHQ site and check out the CMMOS area. This is the way mods should be handled, and I'm really hoping it catches on a bit more than I've recently seen. I'm only using CMMOS mods, which is paining me a bit, since all the recent, and very excellent mods, have yet to get the CMMOS treatment. Regards
  20. I enjoyed both of those books on Stalingrad, but definitely enjoyed Craig's more. I think it was that he focussed on a group of people and wove it well into the historical background. Beevor's effort was more of a chronicle, and didn't seem to have much new info to offer, but was a good read nonetheless. OTOH War of the Rats (it wasn't an history, but was sold as a novel) was quite horrible, focussing on a couple of pages from Enemy at the Gates and adding an American heroine into the Streets of Stalingrad to boot. I think if I wanted to slam an author, and discourage people "with lesser moral values and sense than I" I would say don't read this book, and if it's on your shelf destroy it immediately. Tongue firmly in cheek here. Paul Carell's books were pretty good too IMHO. They just turned me onto other books to get more details and more info and perspectives from other writers as well as the other side. And the reading sure as hell wasn't as dry and dull as the military history books by Glantz or Erickson. No harm in that! Regards [ January 01, 2003, 09:35 PM: Message edited by: Nick Schieben ]
  21. That's when you need to swap CDs and quickly fire-up IL-2 Regards
  22. I found the Battle for Moscow and excellent book. Watch it though - some of those with a hard-on for Carell may also take offence with Col. Seaton (ret) as he continually refers to Hitler as the Fuehrer! I managed to wade through Erickson's Road to Stalingrad by interspersing bouts of watching Scorched Earth (I think), taped from the History Channel. Erickson narrates and it covers both his books. Recommended! Regards
  23. Here are a couple I didn't see mentioned in this thread: Red Storm on the Reich by Duffy This describes the final battles from both perspectives, but with a heavier emphasis than usual from more recent soviet docments. Ostfront 44 by Buchner From the German perspective, a chronicle of the bitter defeats suffered during 1944. Incidentally, I have both of Carell's books Hitler Moves East, and Scorched Earth. I don't have a problem with the author, and the books are pretty good from a German "big picture" perspective. Details can be found in works by other authors. For example, while "Scorched Earth" finishes after Bagration, Buchner's book covers that battle and others of that year in greater depth and detail. Both books actually refer to some similar sources, and believe me, there doesn't seem to be much "Nazi trumpet blowing" as he honestly describes the grim struggles. Regards
  24. >>Russian Tanks of WWII Bean & Fowler ISBN 0760313024>> That is an excellent one! It came out in 2002. Published by MBI.
  25. That was some great detective work! Mazin' ennit! how we have to continually trade off with Windows functionality and security. I'm very wary of the constant XP updates, as they sometimes fix and break things at the same time. Fortunately I've not updated since SP1, and I'm using the 41.07 drivers (which are dynamite with Il-2!). However I've not bothered with AA effects since AF looks very nice on its own, and there's always the chance that one ALT TAB too many can send that CMBx turn into the bit bucket! At least that sometimes happened when I was using Win2kPro. Regards
