New WWII RTS game Theatre of War announced
Nick Schieben replied to Madmatt's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Gee willikers! How HUGE this is! I'm gonna upgrade my system and quit my job just so I can spend every waking moment building up my reflexes. Weren't you guys so bummed out with WW II recently? What changed? -
I'm just waiting for an intro screen on the web page ala the late Talonsoft ...

Battlefront's CMSF T34/85 will look nicer than these!
Nick Schieben replied to Efraim's topic in Combat Mission Shock Force 1
At a 1km/hex strategic level I've been playing Highway to the Reich lately, which is RTS-based, exremely playable and it put me off Panzer Campaigns series for good. I may be banished to hell for saying this, but I'm a lot more interested in the WWII game illustrated above than.... clank! Arghh! It's getting awfully hot around here. Bail out!!! -
Yet even more mods in the works (updated!)
Nick Schieben replied to AndrewTF's topic in Combat Mission: Afrika Korps
You roxx0rs AndrewTF! -
In Otto Carius' "Tigers in the Mud" he mentions many instances of soviets letting loose with ATR (in abundance), particulary aimed at the command cupola. They might not kill but they could really hurt...

Movie about Kursk?
Nick Schieben replied to legend42's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
I saw a bit of a Russian movie on Dutch or Belgian TV in the late 70s. I amost looked like it was filmed on the battle site using actual wrecks. There were lots of authentic-looking vehicles, including Elefants. I wish I could find the name of it. The Battlefield series on Discovery also has an excellent 2 part documentary on Kursk. Regards -
Holy crap! I have 2 of Carrel's books: Hitler moves East and Scorched Earth. THey're not all that bad as an overview, as understood from the German point of view. I enjoyed reading them, and they pointed me in the right diection to other books that provided further details and depth, for instance Buchner's Ostfront '44. There again, <sarcasm on> my mother was in the Hitler Jugend and this has probably influenced my warped opinions <sarcasm off>. I don't find that political correctness and East Front history really tie in all that well. Take your pick, put it in your pipe, and smoke it. Regards

Any Canadians get CMAK yet?
Nick Schieben replied to Shadow 1st Hussars's topic in Combat Mission: Afrika Korps
Just got it today in Ottawa, Ontario. It went straight to my communal mailbox, hence no ripoff by customs or the post office. It's nice to see some sensibility and creativity from companies shipping from the US. Thanks! -
Well now, that must be the first British (?) comment I've heard defending the prowess of the Eyties (If you want polical correctness, wargaming may not be a suitable hobby). I think the Germans may have had some less flattering remarks. Perhaps I'll eat my words, when I get trounced playing the Commonwealth, by the blackshirts in a QB Thereagain, I was brought up on the Hotspur and Victor, which were boys' magazines back in England, and they portrayed the Spaghettis in North Africa in a very derogatory, but funny, light. Think of opera, buffoonery, and extreme cowardice. I believe these publications were even more cruel in their portrayal of the Japanese soldier(or Nips as they called them). Their rifles were always twice as tall as the soldier. John Lennon glasses and buckteeth always completed the picture. Surprisingly, morals aside, I don't give a toss about their uniforms, stains or not. I don't typically zoom in when in retrograde movement, especially if they're my troops. Worth a chuckle indead. Haw haw! <G> note smilicon

lost Direct3D somehow, can anyone help??
Nick Schieben replied to MikeT's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
MikeT, Try this: Run DXdiag.exe. Go to the Display Tab and disable DirectDraw and DirectX accleration. Reboot Go back to DXdiag->Display and re-enable those 2 settings Reboot Test those settings to confirm they work The reboots are critical. Sometimes it takes more than one try at this, but this has gotten me back in action after the few times this has happened to me. Regards -
Mr Noobie mods at cmmods?
Nick Schieben replied to carlrender's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
I believe you can still get the CMMOS'd versions from a link at CMHQ. I have all the CMMOS sets and the program. Mr. Noobie's stuff is a big feature in it. It's a shame that CMMOS has kind of died out - for the moment at least. Regards -
Still no new cmmos!
Nick Schieben replied to massimorocca's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
You're right! I read something a few weeks ago that something was in the works so nothing like a nudge or a BUMP to keep this one up on the list. Regards -
I met Dick back in the Steel Panthers days, under a different alias of course. My best wishes go out to him, via this NG. Regards

Cannot initialize 3D graphics! (Help)
Nick Schieben replied to rlh1138's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
That's quite a nasty problem, and I was surprised at how many emails there were out there about it. THe DXDiag messages led me to suspect a hardware problem. I removed the troublesome card and I put in an old Geforce card which worked perfecty, but when I put back my Ti-4200 the problem returned. I sent the card to the manufacture and they told me there was nothing wrong with it about 3 days later. Luckily I could use the old card in the meantime, and did some research. There also an article with about 10 poosible fixes on M$ Technet, but try this one first. Since I was at work when I sent my previous message, to clarify, the 2 things to look at under "Video" are 1) DirectDraw 2) Direct 3D You would see the errors when running the Direct 3D tests. Good luck! Regards -
Cannot initialize 3D graphics! (Help)
Nick Schieben replied to rlh1138's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
Oh Oh! I had something similar happen to me recently. Run DXDiag (I think it's around windows\system, but run "find" to make sure) , open the video tab and run the Direct3D and Hardware Accleration tests. It will probably go through the Direct3D test OK but will bomb during the hardware tests, telling you that there is no memory and such. Here is the important part: 1) Disable both of these buttons - shut down the computer 2) Re-enable both of these buttons - immediately shut down the computer 3) Run the tests again - feel good if you see a 3d cube rolling around during the hardware tests! No guarantee - but this worked for me. -
Sorry, not quite clear here, but did you resent the visit or was it a recent visit. Reason I ask .. last time I was there everyone with a tan was referred to as a schwartzer! Wow! I think if you go further up north they're a bit stricter on this. However even I was out in the sun today too, and I don't feel guilty at all. Regards

New Nvidia drivers out that seem to work.
Nick Schieben replied to Schonhult's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
I can also confirm that these drivers run nicely indeed. No slowdown at all. I have no problem <ALT> <TAB>ing to see black text on white backgrounds when using 4xS AA (which I can't live wihtout!). Regards -
Next release of new CMMOS mods ?
Nick Schieben replied to Thin Red Line's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
It's been awfully quiet on that front for about a month. Some new CMMOS mods were about to be posted, then silence. Meanwhile all these new mods keep flooding in... Regards -
Anyone tried the 43.51s detonators yet?
Nick Schieben replied to RSColonel_131st's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
I just had to RMA my Ti-4200 since it lost its hardware acceleration functionality (something fried I guess), and slapped in an older Geforce 2 GTX with a whopping 32 Mb of video ram (joke) in the meantime. On my Athlon XP 2000+ I'm using the 43.51 dets with XP Pro. CMBB is a bit slower, probably more due to the older vidcard. I'm running with 4x AA on and VSych disabled. I <alt> <tab> when I start and before I finish CMBB to take care of the text issue, and it causes me no problems. CMBB still looks great, and it will take a lot more than a tolerable performance hit to keep me away from it! Regards -
43.45s still don't work
Nick Schieben replied to offtaskagain's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
Just a quick update - I picked up the 43.45a dets from the ASUS site, since I've got an ASUS Ti-4200. Apart from the need to <ALT> <TAB> in CMBB when I need to see black-on-white text, I find everything works fine, including FSAA. With the previous 43.45 drivers, the only other issue was the noticeable drop in frame rates, but this no longer seems to be the case. Works for me! ...and they also work great with IL2 FB. Regards -
CMHQ Update - CMMOS!!!
Nick Schieben replied to jwxspoon's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Yes MikeT, that would be a great idea for some of us temporally challenged would be CMMOS'ers. Now, I had to go to page 2 to find out that we had some new CMMOS additions - so a quick BUMP before I go check 'em out. Regards Edited to remind me to update my sig [ April 24, 2003, 08:41 AM: Message edited by: Nick Schieben ] -
That sounds awesome! My winter PBEMs are looking just incredible, what with the quilted uniforms and snowy boots, and the next one may just have to take place further north. There's always something to look forward to here. Regards

... and I'll raise your bump with another one. "Hi mom!" Regards

Anything new for CMMOS coming?
Nick Schieben replied to cpierce19's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Your (meaning the CMMOS team, the web work, and of course the modders) work, and the time your putting into sharing this great stuff is really appreciated, but you get yourself better MikeT! There are many fantastic mods out there, but I prefer waiting to see them packaged into CMMOS. It really adds to the whole thing. Regards
