"The Luga Breakthrough" Tourney Now COMPLETE
SGT_Gold replied to Holien's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
I lost very very few vehicles in the final scenario while killing almost all of the Russian armor including the T-34's. What I didn't have time to do was roll up through the middle of the town and reduce the isolated Russian infantry. If it weren't for what was possibly the worst streak of bad luck I've ever had in a game, I would have come out of the thrid scenario with a better point total and a solid second place in my division. Seeing as I inflicted more damage but got a lower percentage, I'm guessing that Messrs. Sgt Gold & Walpurgis did not send an entire Pz 38 platoon, one StuG and part of an infantry platoon to their death like I did ] -
I'll play test if you need another player.

Grog question about 'zooks and 'shrecks
SGT_Gold replied to THumpre's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The actual number isn't as easy to come up with as realizing that almost every company of infantry had a heavy weapons platoon. The US ratio was one 'zook per platoon of infantry, the German slightly higher due to the 'disposable' nature of the 'faust. -
Medal of Honour or Iron Cross
SGT_Gold replied to SuperSulo's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
That's one old Medal of Honor, WW I at the latest. Also, the ribbon above the medal is upside down. The stars form an 'M' when the ribbon is worn correctly. -
Nordic Wannabee Tourney - finals
SGT_Gold replied to imported_WARHAMMER's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I've got one game still out there and haven't sent in any AAR's because I thought I was going to finish the last game quickly. My opponent has dropped off again. -
ModSlut special: Small arms preview! Hot Pix Inside!!
SGT_Gold replied to Juju's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Not only that, but the M-1 in the picture has the stamped trigger guard. All Winchesters used the milled unit. The safety is wrong, and the finnish is way too coarse for WW II Winchester parkerization. Probably an 'import'. [ March 19, 2002, 11:08 PM: Message edited by: SGT_Gold ] -

One of the things SLAM pointed out was that better training got better results in terms of rounds down range. Two very good books on the general subject of the psychology of killing are: On Killing Lt. Col. Dave Grossman Back Bay Books IBSN 0-316-33000-0 An Intimate History of Killing Joanna Bourke Basic Books ISBN 0-465-00737-6 -
Spotting Small Arms Fire: Too Easy?
SGT_Gold replied to Determinant's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The US went to smokeless powder after the Spanish Mausers caused them so much trouble in Cuba. Any large volume of fire using 'smokeless' powder will leave a discolored cloud hanging around the fighting position. The further away you are the easier it is to see it. -
Best Axis tank for the buck in CM
SGT_Gold replied to DaveN's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I'd answer this one in two parts. Static Any SP without a turretr Hetzer or Stug. As long as you can plan your fields of fire you won't get flanked unless your opponent really works on it. Manuver PZ IV in the front, Panther in overwatch. Once you open the range up over 500m, the Panther is very hard to kill from the front. PZ IV's carry a large enough HE load that if they out advance their infantry they stand a chance of staying alive. Gamey Any King or Super thing. -
Back when I was a grunt, we didn't want to be anywhere near tanks, firing or not. The muzzle blast alone is enough to make you stay away, never mind the sabot parts. If your fighting position is correctly built, you have protection from the rear against small arms and other 'light' weapons. I got out before the sabot round became wide spread so I don't know how they handle it now.

Artillery and Fog of War......Bug?!?!?
SGT_Gold replied to Urban Shocker's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
what in the 9 heavens is a ack-ack? I heard this in Hostile Waters (a solid underdog action game) and I thought it was something the pilot who spoke it made up. Now, it could mean a AA gun or a howitzer, or, I could be completely off the mark.</font> -

I've finished one game and am recieving turns from Cooper. The Aussie is no where in site and I've forgotten who the last player is because I haven't seen a turn this year. -
I have found that if you use one of the grass mods that has grid lines it makes it easier to get the lay of the land.

Troops singing for morale pts?
SGT_Gold replied to NWashbourn's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Part of the problem with doing waaaaay too much research on any subject is you can't quite recall where you read something. Anyway, I did read somewhere that the the French attacked singing, the English shouting, but the Americans in silence. It was the silence that bothered the Germans most.
