  1. That's right, the IS1 should have its own model, and the IS3 too. Very disappointing.
  2. Most of the relevant books in my possession say how advanced, innovative and influential German WW2 camouflage schemes were (especially the late-war ones) and their faithful inclusion in CMBO and CMBB by the designers and modders provides much of the fun of the game for me. What puzzles me is that I can't remember seeing a military vehicle since WW2 (in TV news reports etc) in anything other than plain green or sand (for the desert). No doubt exceptions can be pointed out, but I think they are indeed exceptions; and one can see how some uniforms owe something to the ideas behind those of the Waffen SS for example, but in general and particularly as far as vehicles are concerned no-one seems to have developed what the Germans did in WW2. Why should this be so? It cannot be solely due to recent technological developments allowing vehicles to be detected whatever their colours, since it seems to have been the case ever since 1945. Can it be that the German schemes were adjudged less effective than one might think, or simply that the victorious powers did not have a tradition of such developed camouflage to build on? Any other explanations?
  3. Thanks for the response KnivBjorn: I've looked all through that useful site: I think Schoerner's 'anti-censorship' mod must be the one. Not clear whether it works with the English version of the game.
  4. Sorry, I have done a forum search and looked around the websites I know about, but I can't find the mod for those of us who don't want our SS troops labelled waffengrenadiere or whatever it is. I'm sure it was mentioned the other day. Any pointers appreciated.
  5. This will seem a terribly ignorant question to some, but on the other hand maybe it's too easy to think some things are obvious and that we know what's going on. So, my scenario is this: an enemy shell has hit your tank, penetrated the armour and its comparatively small amount of explosive has blown up in the confined interior (I think that's waht happens). The tank does not itself explode or catch fire, though the gun droops, and the crew bale out, all, or all but one, alive, and the tank is designated 'knocked out'. A common event in CM. My question is this: what exactly has happened inside the tank that renders it out of use at least for the time being? The crew may be afraid, shocked, wounded or (I imagine)temporarily deaf, but leaving those factors ruthlessly aside for now, what else is to stop them getting back in and, at the very least, driving off the battlefield in armour-protected comfort? Also, why does the gun droop? As they say, it's not asking that's stupid, rather than not knowing, or words to that effect!
  6. Thank you all for your interesting responses. I will read and think.
  7. I started off using them regularly because they seemed like a good unit to have hiding in a forward position ready to pick off enemies when the chance arose, and also I thought their abilities would usefully complement the regular infantry in combat. But I look at the info. after battles and it's always 'no kills', 'no kills', 'no kills'... Maybe they fulfil a useful suppression role, but I have read a bit about WW2 snipers recently and it seems that in fact they were very useful for actually killing enemies, so why don't they do so in CM? Is it for political correctness (like, I presume, the reason they're not called 'snipers') or should I use them in some particular way that hasn't yet occurred to me?
  8. Hi everyone. I only acquired CM early this year, but I've been playing it ever since, and I find that one of the pleasures of playing on the German side is the vast range of varying infantry to choose from. However, I don't really know what some of them are meant to represent, and wondered if the experts could explain. First, the Volksturm and Volksgrenadiers. Judging from the game, the Volksturm seems to be a separate organisation, with the Volksgren. integrated into the regular army, and they are differently armed, but since they are both called 'Volks-' is there some connection? What were the differences, in concept, recruitment, use on the battlefield, and so on? And is there any connection with the 'Volksdeutsche' I recently read about - poorly trained men from Romania, Hungary and Alsace, some of them POWs, used as replacements late in the war? Second, the Sicherung squads. Are these meant to be from the Sicherheitdienst (SD)? - I don't think I had realised they were organised into regular army-like platoons, companies etc and used in frontline combat. Finally, the Sturmkompanie. Perhaps given the meaning of 'sturm' these men are supposed to be a unit from one of the fairly rare assault divisions? Or are they something else, and why can I only select a whole company rather than a platoon (or, going the other way, a battalion)? Well maybe all this has been dealt with already, in which case apologies, but I have usually found forum searches distinctly unhelpful. What is more, if I search this forum I can't read the white text of the results! I'm sure someone out there knows all the answers though, so thanks in advance for any clarification. And now I see that my questions are partially answered in a topic just down the list - there's a coincidence considering that I only registered today and that was in part specifically to ask these questions! - but that still leaves the Sicherung and Sturmkompanie one s.
