New Scenario - Expert Attackers Only
jwxspoon replied to jwxspoon's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Coming shortly Ugbash - a quick note for you: 1. Everybody gets creamed the first time they play. The next time you play the AI will have moved the forces around but your tactic will be better. 2. You will be in contact almost immediately. Don't start advancing until you know what you're into. 3. If you go left you'll run into part of the defense. If you go right you'll run into part of the defense. If you go straight you'll run into all of the defense, which is built around stopping you on the road. Why then does eneryone ignore me and go down the road.... heheh Enjoy! Jeff -

On the way -
Just finished playtesting of a new scenario called "If a Frog Had Wings". It is March, 1945. Elements of the 3rd Armored are advancing in Germany, and have been given orders to secure an old military school and what they believe to be a veritable treasure trove of German government documents. Startled by the speed of the Allied advance, the Germans are frantically trying to load the building's contents into trucks and dispose of them...the local Volksturm, augmented by a few anti-tank assets are determined to hold the Americans off for long enough to get rid of the documents. To this end a defense in depth has been emplaced on the approach to the old school. While Allied aircraft have mercilessly punished the area, the Germans believe they can hold off up to twice their strength of infantry and a large number of enemy armor. This belief is going to be put to the test. This is a scenario for experienced attackers only and will REQUIRE tactics beyond that of simply driving down the road. This is a scenario that will test even a high level player against the AI...if you think you have what it takes, go to the Scenario Depot (www.dragonlair.net/combatmission/ ) or email me and I will send you the file. Expect to be in contact immediately and be prepared to use your engineers to clear mines! Good Luck! jwxspoon [ 10-07-2001: Message edited by: jwxspoon ]

Where to send my scenerio?
jwxspoon replied to SgtSweatHog's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I'll try that one. Please send to jweatherspoon@sc.rr.com jw -
Hi Guys, Just finished a new scenario that I'm really proud of. It's a large battle (so bring your heavy duty computers) that is broken down into 3 phases; called "Fun" and hosted at Admiral Keith's site. The first 15 turns feature a Heer Recon Force engaging an American Recon force for control of critical terrain. Speed and audacity are the watchword here, as the three major terrain features (2 small villages and a ridgeline) will become hotly contested very quickly. Reinforcements arrive to both sides fifteen minutes into the game and are mostly comprised of medium armor, anti aircraft and infantry. Airstrikes are possible for both sides...the Americans are clearly superior in Artillery. As the battle develops the heavy reinforcements will arrive fifteen minutes later (turn 30) and will bring heavy armor and infantry. We playtested this game five times with different player sets and had a blast, resulting in two draws, a allied tactical and two axis minors. This game does not play well against the AI because the AI cannot seem to get moving until about turn 10. I used a variable force placement (you can move the forces around in the beginning along the map edge to suit your tactics) and the AI is just stumped with that. Hope you all enjoy, I can honestly say that this scenario is one of my all time favorites to play, even though I had a major hand in developing it. jw

Yes I mean the PAW. Had never seen it before because it is only available late in the game and I normally play Oct 44 time frame.

OK. Just curious. Exactly what IS ths panzerabwherthingie. Looks the size of a regular 75mm AT gun. Seems to be 80mm. Evidently fires hollow charge rounds and has some HE capability. Can anybody enlighten me? jw

Hi Guys, Question - is it possible to add bomb or artillery craters and burned out vehicles to a scenario map? Also, when placing the initial vehicles for a scenario onto the map can you have them dig in during the scenario design portion? Thanks jw [ 09-28-2001: Message edited by: jwxspoon ]

MAP/PBEM how-to question...need help.
jwxspoon replied to buddy's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Hi buddy, What I and one of my regular pbem guys do is agree on the size and # of turns for the game. Then we take turns developing a map, and we create a scenario file using that map. I choose my forces and then email him the scenario file. He doesn't look at mine (or vice versa) and chooses his forces. Then we start the game as a saved scenario. Works great and we get the custom map options we want. Jeff -
Scenario Depot Top 10 over 3 9/19/01
jwxspoon replied to Bigdog's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I won it as allies but had nothing in the way of an effective fighting force left. I had 1 tank surviving, 1 priest surviving, a Greyhound and a few HT's, along with fragmented squads. BTW, there is a cool new scenario in the DB by a top author, similar in size to "Big Valley", called "Fun". hehe [ 09-25-2001: Message edited by: jwxspoon ] -

MG Jeeps. Is there best way to use them?
jwxspoon replied to Louie the Toad's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I like to use the MG Jeeps as towed gun killers. I have had success using the jeep to scoot around to the flank of the gun and knock it out. The guns have a hard time turning and tracking the jeep and I have had some success with this (not enough that i would buy the MG jeep on purpose, but if I was stuck with one in a scenario?). -
I'll take the Hetzer over the Marder every time due to the low profile and front armor.

One Machine Gun burst equals how many bullets?
jwxspoon replied to mg42 gunner's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I agree...if you've ever tried to change the barrel on an M60 while that sucker is red hot you haven't had any fun. I've also seen an M16 barrel get so hot that it turned the barrel white, the flash hider unscrewed itself and the handguards melted up front. -
My understanding is that it starts on September 9th with a 2 hour premiere.

Does anybody know if this site is still being supported? This is one of my favorite sites along with Admiral Keith's Scenario Depot.

CM still$45 with CM2 comming out???
jwxspoon replied to IronClad's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I think CM is worth double the $$. I have not found another game that I am willing to play, day after day, and leave hundreds of dollars worth of other programs sitting in their cases. I play the other games, enjoy them, get bored and then end up playing only CM consistently. jwxspoon -
I love these gamey threads! I think we each have our own definition of "gamey". The key is to set the ground rules BEFORE you play your opponent. Some people are ticked off by the flak wagons; some don't like the wasp flamethrowers, some don't like fighting 19 HMC's in a QB, some don't like untowed guns in an ME...just clear it with your opponent and you're fine. Each time I play someone new I ask him what his requested restrictions are, and I may or may not have some of my own. If the restrictions are too stringent, then I don't play that opponent. If at the end of the game he is a sore loser or an ass___, I just don't play him again. There is no shortage of potential opponents for this game. [ 08-28-2001: Message edited by: jwxspoon ]
