CM Gamers with Military BackGrounds
GenSplatton replied to SapperLight69's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I hear you Teamski. I leave Friday for my 4th deployment to the SWA since 9/11. That's why I haven't joined myself. -
CM Gamers with Military BackGrounds

A distinct lack of Air Force types from the looks of the member pics. -
You may have problems backing up the CD since it is a hybrid, i.e. made to work with both the Mac and the PC. I know I did. I just had to use off the shelf software to make a copy and that was that. MadMatt himself told me how to do it, so obviusly making a copy of your own personal, fully paid for CD is totally fine.

tactics against German Guns
GenSplatton replied to lavgunner's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Otherwise known as "most of the time." Sorry, not trying to pick, but that phrase just sounded really odd. -
Either I'm really missing the point, or not. What you are saying is you can't figure out where to aim the mortar based on the A-O unit's line of sight? If so, this shouldn't be a problem. Just highlight A-0 AND the mortar(s) and do your targetting (you'll get the blue line where you can target, black where you can't). Then, when your done, go back to A-0 and hit X to cancel his targetting line. The mortar's line will still stick regardless of whether the A-0 still targets the area or not. Doing this, you can quickly target 6 or 7 mortars on one space all at once, or 7 mortars on 7 targets one at a time, whatever you want. Just be sure you only pair the mortars you want to fire with the A-0 unit when you set the target.

The Wrong Hill has an AVRE in it. It is a heavily wooded armor battle, so you will have to fight armor with it. Mine killed two Panthers before it couldn't back away/reload fast enough to survive. It also missed twice at very short range. So it's kill percentage against a Panther at less than 50m is about 50%.

Mortars fire from buildings
GenSplatton replied to foamy's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Yes, but subsequent rounds would have to be fired by the now dead mortar team. Not bloody likely! -
Mortars fire from buildings
GenSplatton replied to foamy's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I don't suppose it was intentional, and I don't mean to be mean, but that was one of the funniest posts I have ever read. You do realize that a building has a roof right? How do you think the mortar round would get through the roof if the thing is inside the building? Remember, this game is designed to be REALISTIC. Would you expect a mortar round to warp through your roof if you launched one inside your home? Probably not, hence it won't work in CM either. But seriously, thanks for the laff! -
Players who only play PBEMs, QBs, scenarios, etc.
GenSplatton replied to dalem's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)

quote:
I only play PBEM because I'm meticulous about finding the perfect spot for my men and tanks when I deploy them. I spend hours looking for the best LOS on the map, the best areas to bait and trap an opponent, and when the film arrives I spend a good half hour watching that over and over and over again.

Are you single? I would be if I spent that kind of time on CM! You must be, or have a very understanding spouse (or a spuse that really doesn't like you and is glad you shut yourself up in the den for hours at a time ). Seriously, there's just no way I could justify that much time on a game while the wife and kids are around. But that's also why I seldom do TCP, I can't justify two or three hours parked in front of the comp to play one. So I play PBEM almost exclusively, but not for the same reason as you. -
City movement: newbie questions
GenSplatton replied to GenSplatton's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Thanks... -
Inexperinced in city fighting. Things I don't get/understand: When can you and when can you not move from one building to the next when the buildings are "connected" in a city scenario, without having to actually "go outside?" Why can you put troops in a single building and they can fire no problem, but in a city, they can't fire from one building in to the next? Why can you enter a single building through any wall, no door required, but in a city fight all the sudden there has to be a door on that wall? My beliefs, right or worng: You can't fire from one building to the next when they are connected because it considers this two walls side by side, hence, to thick. Yes, no? Also, the only way to pass from building to buidling without going outside is if BOTH buildings have a door represented on that common wall, yes or no? You need a door to enter a city building because BTS said so. Yes, no?

Combat Mission Modeling Contest!!
GenSplatton replied to Diceman's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
My gawd, the models on that Missing-Lynx site are unreal! These guys are artists, not just modelers. Thanks for the link. I'm posting it up everywhere I can think of. -
Awesome CMBO! (large pictures inside)
GenSplatton replied to Porajkl's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I've never used a sound mod. Maybe I need to try that. Where are they found? I saw someone mention Scipio's page is gone now? -
I also did a table that lists unit prices and firepower at the platoon level. It may be what you are looking for. Go here and click on the Firepower Tables link. http://members.home.com/loketar/

Not Buying CM2 because .....
GenSplatton replied to Linda WarChest's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Interesting arguments all around. First off, I must say I see no need to upgrade to XP. I use 98SE and have ZERO problems with it. I never get blue screens, my games all work, and I'm happy. Secondly, will this problem cost BTS? I doubt it. Most of us will be the ones purchasing CM2. Wargamers are a small community, I doubt to many "new" gamers will be waiting with baited breath to jump on the CM bandwagon. We CM players will be the CM2 players. We all know the issues with XP, so I doubt it is going to have much of an effect, if any, on sales. Thirdly, NVidia may be aware of the problem but, like I said, the CM community is relatively small in the grand scheme of things. So I don't expect them to spend much time fixing the problem as they have bigger fish to fry. As for BTS fixing the problem, can they? Is this even something they could address? Sounds to me like the problem will have to be addressed by NVidia, but I may be wrong. I'm no graphics guru. Finally, yes, Linda is a troll. The message remains the same with no effort whatsoever to provide valid or even well thought out arguments one way or another. Who knows, maybe Derek SMart got tired of fighting with Homeworld fanatics and wanted to try another crowd out for size. -
DON'T HIDE ARMOR. That's the one piece of advice I can give any player. Man, did I learn it the hard way. 5 pieces of armor lost on turn one. Still managed a draw, but wasn't happy about it.

Combat Mission 2: The Game that Followed Combat Mission 1. Or, easier yet, CM2, the sequel.

I find Hetzers are usually identified as "SP Guns" more than anything. In fact, whenever I see SP Gun?, I just assume it's a Hetzer.

QB suggestion for the future
GenSplatton replied to Wilhammer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Ah Subvet, I see what you're saying. Kind of throws the whole VP thing out though. There really are no VPs till the game is over.
