1. Acutally Erwin, yours was irrelvant in our game in such that I never got LOS to it. So, had it been modeled exactly right, it wouldn't have mattered. I never saw it to get a shot off. However, it has turned the tide in several other battles that I think I would have won easily otherwise.
2. Originally emailed to BTS but came back undeliverable... I was playing a TCP/IP game the other day and was having a heck of a time getting any sort of LOS to the target area. I finally said something and my opponent mentioned it was due to the dense fog. I was like "what dense fog?" Sure enough, the status bar showed dense fog. I checked all my settings, I had everything set to full detail. But my screen showed no trace of the fog whatsoever. Here are my specs: Abit KT7A RAID motherboard AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO video card 256 MB RAM As you can see, I should have more than enough power to display any graphic in the game. Any idea what the problem may be? It shows smoke, rain and all the other types of things just fine.
3. Lately, I've been running in to more and more flak vehicles, mainly trucks. If I remember correctly, there have been various threads on the fact that they are modeled poorly in CM. Anyhow, they have been wreaking havoc with my armor when I play the American side. Stuarts, Greyhounds, M-8s, even Shermans fall to these things way to easily due to their high rate of fire and near indestructible nature. They seem especially unbalancing when playing short 75 rules or smaller value games where few armor pieces can be purchased. How do you folks destroy these things? I know people have mentioned Artillery, but I hate to waste a precious and limited resource like that. Not to mention, a good player isn't going to let them sit long enough to be bombarded. Tanks seem ill0suited in that they get off one shot at most before the flak gun tears them up. And they seem to devestate troop formations. What's the key against them, short of asking folks not to use them?
4. Actually no, I'm not talking about exit zones. I'm talking strictly units, in a QB ME, that are routed to the point that they run off the map and disappear. In the end, I ended up routing three squads off the SIDE of the map. Just wondering how they were scored.
5. I don't mean units that purposely exited. I have played a fella a few times. In one game, I had a squad routed by artillery run right off the map. In our current game, I routed two of his right off the map. In both cases, had the units not been able to exit, they would have taken severe casualties. When a unit exits the map, are they treated as kills, captured, or just gone? In other words, do you get any points as a reward for forcing them to exit?
6. Viceroy and Gyrene, thanks for the link. I emailed Abbot asking about the guide and received no response, so he may indeed be away on vacation, busy with real life issues, etc. Originally he had been sending me links to the page, looking for feedback, as I'm sure he solicited from many folks. Lately, I hadn't heard anything, which was why I wondered. Good to see it's alive and well. Soddball and Gemarnboy, I think you overestimate the impotance of yourselves and this forum. If you think I could care less about whether or not my posts meet your approval, well, continue by all means if it helps stroke your egos. And as for banishment, I would surely survive a banning, though apparently it would be crippling to yourselves. But, if you bother to actually read the threads to which you responded, you'll see in no way did I ever chide the original FAQ in any way, only those things that came after which added nothing to it. If indeed it is updated on a regular basis, then there would be no need to bump it with useless filler, correct?
7.
quote:
Uhhh...look at the first page of the FAQ (!). The latter pages of "drivel" are just there to keep the thread on the top page or two of the forum.

You can do the cute little rolly eyes all you want, but nothing in that thread had anything to do with the topic. Other than the first two posts, the thread has never been updated with anything useful. Yes, he mentioned it is replied to occassionally to move it to the top, but the fact is, that's the ONLY thing that's ever been added to it, drivel, as opposed to anything useful. Had he said "The FAQ has never been updated, only quips to move it to the top have been added since it's origination," then your comment would have been warranted. However, he didn't, so it's not. I expected that at least a FEW of the posts would have been additions to the FAQ itself. However, that's not the case. I'd have to say from the responses, or lack thereof, the Beginners Guide probably died a slow and quiet death.
8. Well Maximus, I glanced at the last two pages of the FAQ. Seems like about the most useless bunch of drivel I've seen in an open thread and certainly contained nothing useful. Abbot, you around?
9. I remember Abbott was working on a beginners guide. Did it ever come to fruition or did it just die off?
10. I know it can be done but not sure how exactly. If I want to host a TCP game that started as a PBEM game, how do I go about the switch?
11. Hey Joeski, I guess the question is, how do you know that the HQ is giving you LOS? Unlike an on board mortar, you can target an FO without LOS. Are you sure you aren't just plotting your FO without line of sight without realizing it? I know a mortar without LOS won't let you target, but that isn't true for an FO. (This is for everyone) Does the FO targetting line change dependant on whether you have line of sight or not? I believe it's always an orange line isn't it?
12. As a new CMer, I just want to thank you guys for your outstanding product. I have only completed SIX, yes six, PBEM games and have already learned to dislike the flag rush with a passion. I am going to use this proggy from here on out. I also added a link and a big kudo to you guys on my page. Not that it's large or anything, but I'll make sure all the BoB ladder players know about this fine product. Keep up the great work.
13. I use Wolf's high contrast mod myself. WHen it comes to CM, terrain elevation is what I need to see, not pretty green textures.
14. I was reading a thread on another board and someone made reference to using an HQ unit to spot for an FO so that the FO could remain out of the enemy LOS. Now, I know an HQ can spot for on board mortars, but can an FO be under the command radius of an HQ unit and use the HQ's LOS like an on board mortar can?
15. These were STUARTS guys. Unless I'm mistaken (which obviously wouldn't be a first), Stuarts are considered small and awfully hard to see, no?
16. Well wtf, now I am doubly confused. According to that chart, at worst I should have had a 33% exposure. How the hell do I got spotted and taken out with 33% exposure that quickly? Ugh, the answer makes less sense than ever.
17. I agree. But I think I've learned all I need to from this exercise. There's nothing else to be gained that I can see. Other than to confirm that infantry with no armor busting capability whatsoever will lose to a combined force of armor and infantry. I don't need to watch for another 24 turns to figure that one out. I'm thinking lesson learned, time to cut bait and run.
18.
quote:
But still, welcome to CM. All I can say is have fun. Its a great game and one that can be very very enjoyable when played in the right mood.

Thanks, and message received. However, right now, I'd have to say my mood is about as un-right as it can get.
19. Medium I think. Supposed to be moderate hills but it's very flat. I know the standard answer is "never give in, you can always pull it out," but my armor is gone, I have no bazooka teams and only a few infantry guns, one of which is about to be destroyed. Given a distinct lack of spare time, this will probably become the fastest surrender in the annals of CM.
20. Lesson learned, albeit harshly. No, they weren't spotted during movement because they never moved. They were placed there during setup as I said before. As for which side of the cover, I placed them about in the middle of the scattered trees. LOS, yes, I did check. I thought the Hide command would at least allow me to see them before they saw me. Guess I need to research the manual because I sure missed that one. I'm still pissed. So much for a fun game of CM.
21. I placed three tanks in scattered trees and put them in Hide status during the setup phase. At the end of turn one, they are all dead. Every single one was blasted in to oblivion without so much as a wimper. Is the "Hide" command on the armored units menu just some evil joke for us newbies to CM? What does it hide, the fact that they are about to die? Turn one and my chances of winning the QB are up in smoke along with all my armor.
22. I did a forum search but came up empty. Anyone have the URL to the prog that generates a random end turn for the game?
