1. I will propably like the Eastern Front more than Western one. Me being also a Finn might have something to do with it, but I think all the improvements in CMBB will make it impossible, atleast for me, to go back to CMBO. I prefer defending over attacking and I think the improvements on machine guns and dug-in trenches will favor defending so it will be realisticly hard to overcome well prepared defences. This is one reason why I would not imagine going back to Beyond Overlord after having a sweet taste of Barbarossa to Berlin. As I said me being a Finn might mean I view the game through blue-white eyeglasses. (I bet most of you didn't get that last one.) -TNT-
2. Good to hear from you Mattias! Now if we just could get Cogust on the line we'd be having quite rapid advancements. Well anyway I wasn't really serious about replacing anyone, that was just a joke. -TNT- btw. If either of you guys has sent me a turn I haven't received it! And no my quota isn't full (yet).
3. Feel free to send me mail. I can receive new mail now that is. Treeburst you are not going to replace our swedish friends are you? -TNT-
4. Quota on the news server? I wasn't aware that there was a quota on the news server. Actually which one of my many news servers are you refeerring to? For everyone else I have fixed my mail. No more like playing tennis with the garage door. -TNT- [Edited] because the keys on the keyboard are too small-- [ May 21, 2002, 07:14 PM: Message edited by: Tuomas ]
5. Weather is not as warm as it could be. But I thinks we are seeing progress here. Last week was very nice. Game information follows: Against Mattias turn 17 Against Conny turn 6 Against Ari turn 1 FYI I am going to Moscow Wednesday to scout the best routes of advance for my troops through the Gates of Moscow. After this journey I will be unbeatable so be quick with turnreturns if you want to beat me. I will return on Monday to finish the games still hanging. -TNT-
6. Finally I am waiting turns and not vice versa. Especcially Mattias made this difficult. I must also say that I find the scenarios too very intriguing. -TNT-
7. Hummm... Tero is strangely on the edge with this one. I voted for a Finnish manual, but I am beginning to think that maybe you should go all the way and translate the whole game. I think that every Finnish player who has bought CMBO will buy CMBB. But I also think that you get more sales if the game is in Finnish. There are many who can't buy it online. For example lack of a credit card, those aren't very common here in Finland, or for simply lack of trust to Internet commerce. So having the game available on store shells should increase sales significantly. There are also few big strategy fans writing to finnish game/computer magazines. I read about CMBO the first time in July 2000 from one of these mags and they were saying already that the next part is planned to include Finnish troops. That certainly got me interested. Could you imagine how much more attention would the game get if you could mention that it is also awailable in Finnish? This would be a great way to say "You are important to us". And a part of those who say "No Finnish translation" say that because they fear that it would be done poorly. Of course many people will be pissed if they buy the game and can't understand it, but as Steve pointed out BTS has a record of doing things right. And I suppose that the game would not be available on the stores at the same time as directly from Battlefront site so you could run the translated version through a few sensors before it hits the selves if you are conserned about the translation. And about the Finnish swastika. I don't see the relevance here. The swastika was used on tanks and on airplanes and they ofcourse are out of scope. I don't think that you could possibly confuse the Finnish tank version for the Nazi one, the arms are too short not to mention it stands upright. Anyway the box art will be important as Mattias pointed out. Maybe some Finns advancing in open formation or maybe a StuG with logs ambushing some T-34s. Some kind of national symbols should be visible also. In conclusion I think that there is a clear market for a totally Finnish game. There are many players who just want to play few remaches against the Russians every now and then, they just want to kick some Russian ass and the TacAI should suffice for that (maybe they try out a few PBEM but then they would notice that you can do something else than just run from an ambush to another). With a Finnish game and few good articles about the game in local mags I think the game would sell much better in the Finnish market, especially in this casual player group. Having said that I do not need a Finnish version (maybe as a gift for my friends but not for my own use) I am completely satisfied in the English version. -TNT- [ May 02, 2002, 06:50 PM: Message edited by: Tuomas ]
8. In any case pioneers had a vital role in both in Winter and in Continuation War, although they did consist only about five percent of all forces. In the wars pioneers were used not only for specialist duties but also as regular infrantry. In strike detachment duties jägerpioneers weapondry included for example such things as flamethrowers. ------ I might have gotten little too poetic in the end. Anyway the quote did only say that they were used in front lines, but to what extent and since when? The quote also suggests that pioneers were not used as whole squads but rather as teams in strike detatchements. Though the quote doesn't deny this possibility. -TNT-
9. # Fluid Tuomas v Cogust Ari v Mattias # Twin_Valleys Ari v Tuomas Cogust v Mattias # Scenario_3 Tuomas v Mattias Cogust v Ari There is something wrong with Nabla's side opitimization rutine. If you exchange Ari and Mattias you can clearly see, that then everyone plays twice the other side and once the other. Now Mattias plays the latter thrice. I think that there was a quirk like this even in the original sections. Somebody was sore about having to play the allies four times. (Ofcourse nobody would have complained if they had had the germans four times.) I seem to remember that if you would have exchanged sides in one of the scenarios then there would have been three players playing allies thrice and three playing germans thrice. Although I'm not certain about that one, but atleast in the finals the algorithm did'nt work as planned. From the modest input I have seen the algorithm seems to make certain that everyone plays the first side (number of scenarios)/2 rounded up so 3/2 = 2. When one player can't do this the algorithm leaves him on the second side one time too many. Well that's atleast what I have gathered. Any better ideas? -TNT-
10. Same as Cogust. My email adress shouldn't go bad until I graduate. And at this speed it's not going to happen soon. Hmmm interesting. I browsed through NWT-thread and found out that I should not have even qualified if that tourney had finished in time. Does this mean I will be the punchbag of these finals? Anyways we Finnish people (especially students) have this thing called Wappu (1st of May) so I might not be readily available during the next week. Just thought I let you know. -TNT-
11. Hi! Very interesting reasoning from you gyus. I think, as TB155 does, that the first rounds should be reward enough even for die Überspieler and the finals are only for the wine. If you are only in a tourney to get the wine not for having a good time, you are in the wrong place. Anyway if you are the second best player you would not get any better chance for the wine indipendent of which section you would be assigned to. This is because if you could not beat the best one in the same section you would meet him in the final (or before!) and lose anyway. Only chance you would get is that in the final game the best player stumbles somehow (RL problems perhaps). Now I call that a spoiled victory, you get the wine and he gets to whine. It would not bother me if I would be positioned even in über category though likely I would be the underdog in that one. At least I would appriciate the challange and try to do my best and not let my opponents get any easy victories. And I think I have done better if I am not the favor of a game but rather the one expected to lose. Maybe that has something to do me being Finnish and this thing called Reilu Meininki. Anyway I'm not even on the tourney yet so I'll go get my coat. -TNT- [Edited due RL] [ April 22, 2002, 08:43 PM: Message edited by: Tuomas ]
12. I was also sleeping or something. And as Ari pointed out there is no more room in the main event so I volunteer for reservist duty. With all the conditionals I might get to play even from the beginning!-) -TNT-
13. So it paid off writing those AARs! I hope Sesam isn't too pissed off now when I passed him. Well he could have stayed ahead if he had written even one report. -TNT-
14. I will be out of email reach until past easter. I leave tomorrow for Sweden and Kebnekaise and spend the next week flying there. So nothing is wrong when I can't respond to your querys about my game with Dragoon19. Maybe you should ask him for a change. -TNT-
15. I think that Dragoon19 and Brath are the same person. My game with him is two or three turns from completion although I haven't had a new turn from him for a while now. -TNT-
16. Well what about neutral flags? Will you continue to distribute neutral points? Ie. A 60 - B 30 C 65 - D 35 I could argue that C did better than A if the mission was to take ground and keep it. Well I am not certain about this but what do you think? -TNT-
17. Tere! Anyone know where Dragon has dissapeared? We were having nice progress in our Devils scenario and I was hoping to meet the original deadline (today) but I haven't heard from him since 5.2. Well I think we will be done before the FINAL deadline if only he would respond to my inquaries. Anyway who will advance from these first rounds and how will they play in the next round? -TNT-
18. I'll be gone for the weekend so don't be jumping to walls or go replasing me. If you replace me I will do the same for you. -TNT-
19.
quote:
Originally posted by Schrullenhaft: Tuomas - AGP texture storage in main memory is very slow compared to on-board video memory.

Yes I understood that when I re-read Dan's original post.
quote:
It's possible that BTS will put the hooks in for several things to allow for numerous additional bitmaps, but with certain VRAM memory sizes there may be very large slow downs as textures are called from the AGP memory pool in main memory.

Screen resolution also affects available memory for textures, right? For example if I play 1600*1200*32 I have 32 MB-7,5 MB=24,5 MB left for textures or if I play at 1024*768*16 I have 32 MB-2 MB=30 MB. Are you saying that CMBB will automatically detect available texture memory? -TNT- [ 01-03-2002: Message edited by: Tuomas ]

20. Maybe there is a workaround to this VRAM thing. Every damagelevel could have a .bmp number adressed to it, but unless the bmp would be found the game would use the stock bmp (the undamaged one). Same solution could be used for helmets so that every nation had their own bmp for their national helmet but they would use stock geman or stock russian helmet depending on the side. Besides I don't think you usually have many nationalities on the same side. If you would program the game this way we atleast should have much room for improvements when our computers get better. I don't know how easy or hard this would be to implement, but judgigng from CMBO it should be doable because atleast the winter bmps were added this way. And BTW. is VRAM a suchs limiting factor after all? I think nowadays AGP display cards use computers RAM to store these textures. I don't know about macs though. -TNT-
21. I just need to vent... You know I was playing aginst anonymous. I thought everything was going well I blew up his xxxxx building, got a lucky shot on his BLEEEEEEP and took care of his zzzzzzz flank. Now you say: "Everything is going well, what is he complaining about." Well after that I glanced how my BLEEP was doing. It was dead! Quick reverse to see what happened. Yes... Nice... Hey! where did that come from? I saw ?????? coming as fast as it could around the BLEEEP. No BLEEEP from the BLEEP and his BLEEP BLEEPed my BLEEP! As if that wasn't enough my BLEEP turned to BLEEP his BLEEP. A BLEEEP, nothing. Another BLEEEP, again and again! Aaaargh the BLEEP! -TNT-
22.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: Also, do you really think that a Finn should give a German lessons about how to spell a German word (ignoring for the moment that I do that all the time with English native speakers)? And BTW what makes me a Finn?
quote:
Fallschirmjaeger is a noun, hence capital letter at the start. Fallschirmjaegersturmgeschuetzabteilung (yes, that is one word) is also a noun, hence also capital letter at the start. Allthough you could say "Das Geld ist gefälscht". BTW "fake" also implies an action. It is a verb.
23.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: One does.

Actually two, but let's not get in to that.
quote:
Your spelling is the German word for 'wrong'.

YM 'fake' HTH. HAND -TNT-
