1. Well, you know how it is, Terence. Both you and I have played better people, but you can count on them to break the newer players in gently.
2. Since my suggestion didn't make it into the shortlist, I'm going to demand a recount and a removal of all votes that didn't arrive before 3 weeks ago and I'm going to discount the votes of anyone who isn't white. This is "Democracy Corner" isn't it?
3. Louie, why don't you load your engineers onto your tanks, saturate the area with smoke using your 81mm mortar, rush the tanks across under cover of the smoke, and get the engineers to jump off as soon as they reach the other side. That way, after 3 turns, the smoke clears and your opponent finds himself up to his elbows in fresh, combat ready infantry supported by tanks. You could even use the 105mm to bombard the area some distance in front of your arrival point, to get the enemy units to seek cover - would give you an added advantage.
4. Shame you're not in the UK - I could have built you a top PC (shameless plug for people who want a new PC and are UK based (I can't do transatlantic JUST yet ))
5.
quote:
Just don't be upset when I route you.

It's the first time I have uncovered the finer points of DNS and Cisco routers discovered on this forum. Unless he meant rout which would be spelling and everything. Can I suggest that if you consider yourself a good player, you ask Claymore or Fionn for a game. They're both competent combatants and should give you a run for your money.
6. That was the one. I laughed so hard I had to stuff my internal organs back in afterwards. Let's just hope that she doesn't become depressed by his flanking actions and lower hull penetration.
7. I won't say you'll never buy another game - I'm going to. I won't say you'll never PLAY another game - because I do. I'm not a grog but I like the strategy and the way things can go from perfection to tits-up in 15 seconds. Graphics are crap on the original game but mods make it look good. So. Don't buy it if you're not sure. Play the demo until you turn purple if you're not sure.
8. I bought this around the same time as Black and White. Black and White had been hyped as the mutt's nuts, it was by the holy master of all god sims Peter Molyneux (oh wum oh wum), nobody had a bad word to say about it. I saw this game when an evil friend (who shall remain nameless) said "Hey, check this game out, it's really cool." End result: Some months on, Black and White has gathered dust and is no longer on my hard disk. It's dull and I expected more than being able to spank my monkey and watch it crap and eat people. I am still playing CM - I have several PBEM games going on (human vs. human combat is, in my eyes, the best way to play this) and I love it. But, it's not for everyone. If it doesn't appeal to you, best not to buy it. That way you won't be disappointed - and this is HARDLY the place to get a balanced opinion of the game now, is it?
9. You missed the first bit - the fellah posted a link to a website showing a russian APC being rocketed and bodies flying everywhere with the caption 'this is very funny'. Hence our reaction.
10. What about F-86s? You could have an awful lot of fun with a few of those - or maybe a Vulcan on a bombing run? [ 07-13-2001: Message edited by: Soddball ]
11. What about a scenario where the Germans have just looted a town and are trying to get all their stolen paintings/gold/whatever out of there before the allies over-run it? You could have half a dozen trucks worth a whole load of exit points, and could have a long map with the town about 1/3 of the way along the map. The town could be linked by a poor quality road, which wound circuitously through forests and stuff before reaching the axis end of the board. The terrain would be wet, and some with some substantial forests but limited hills, leaving the axis player two choices. Does he race the trucks along the winding road and hope he can outrun the overwhelming allied forces,or does he chance racing them through scattered woods in the wet as a shortcut? Could be a good place to use allied paras with jeeps and trucks, and light guns, aswell as dug in german forces. I'd do it myself, but I'm no artist.
12. Perhaps he should change his name to Major Sicko?
13. I think the newbie guide should be a permanent fixture with links on battlefront's website and the forum, and should include gems such as "Damn fool questions to avoid when first joining the forum" and "Words NOT to use unless you want to be banned within three days".
14. LOL! Hey, take some Ritalin and relax. You've got plenty of time to lose your life. For now, pop outside and breathe some air and look at the sunshine, because it'll be your last chance once the game arrives. 6 Months down the line, you'll surface, haggard, single, broke, smelly, with a phone and electricity bill the size of an African country's national debt, but able to debate with 2 people the modelling accuracy of the Panther 75mm against sharply sloped armour, and able to carry out a successful assault against a pixellated village. PS - Mine took nearly six weeks. But then, I'm in the UK, and I ordered it when they were out of stock for the second time.
15. This is all a bit vague. Bear in mind that different processors are affected by their amount of onboard cache, their onboard bus speed AND their onboard clock speed. Therefore, an AMD 850 Duron will NEVER be as fast as an 850 Athlon because the former has no primary cache, only secondary(I think that's the right way round). Similarly, an AMD K6/2 366 may run slower than a K6/2 350, because the 366 has a 66Mhz bus multiplied at 5.5, whilst the K6/2 350 has a 100Mhz bus multiplied at 3.5. It also depends on your OS. Windows 95/98 are notoriously bad at making use of memory over 128MB - remember, the standard when '95 was released was something silly like 16 or 32. Nobody ever envisioned PCs with 256 or 512MB of RAM in as standard (which is what I build for my customers). Windows ME, and 2000, by contrast, can make use of this memory. Windows ME needs over 128MB of RAM to run really smoothly - and that's without any programs running. Incidentally, if someone tries to flog you a Celeron, push it where the sun doesn't shine. For less money you can have a Duron - and it's just as reliable, faster, and cuter. My home PC has 512MB of RAM. I found the big gain was not turn processing but the ability to do a number of things at once. Winamp, in particular, is a real memory hog, and if you do what I do, which is play music whilst playing CM, that slows everything down. Having extra RAM meant that the music was stored there rather than on the hard disk, so no disk access and thus faster response time. I've also upgraded my processor to an 850 thunderbird from a 600 Duron. The fundamental change whilst playing CM was the speed at which turns were calculated. This seems to have been cut at least in half by getting a better processor. I can't speak about Macs, because I don't know anything about them. I'm sure there's a Mac expert out there who can advise you if that's what you've got. Hope some of this was useful
16. ROTFLMAO! I live for comedy moments like that. I think that you should change your name to retarded_keydet.
17. I have a rather fetching JPEG of a single arty round blowing a pair of them to kingdom come in the St Pierre Eglise airfield scenario (think that's the one). Still, it gave me a couple of nice barbies to roast an ox over once I took the airfield.
18. I'm surprised so many people have had problems with their Nvidias. Which models does it affect? I have a Creative GEForce with 32MB DDR and am using the standard ME drivers. No complaints - even Quake III runs quite happily, and CM is wonderfully smooth. Maybe using standard drivers will help. *shrug*
19. Just as an aside - my office PC is the new Asus 266Mhz with DDR. Running win98 with 1x256MB DIMM. It sucks. We bought it as a test bed to see whether it's worth upgrading from the A7V-133, and it isn't. Stick with the 133 is my advice. No, it isn't my installation.
20. I find that the 'realistic' size makes the units look more like toys, because they're out of scale with the buildings. maybe it's just my eyes
21. Clubfoot said:
quote:
Rigghhhhtttt..... Which is why you're obsessed with a game that portrays the non-historical period of WW2.

Riiighhht.... back. Obsessed? I play it. Obsession I reserve for important stuff - like beer. This is a game.
22. Independence? Independence from what? Not being American, I don't pay attention to history that's less than 300 years old. That's not REAL history. (PS for those who didn't get it, and there are always some )
23. I can lift beer and pizza 3 nights in a row. After that, the 50 yard dash to the gents is just a bonus.
24. Although I am a worthless wossname in the great scheme of things, I feel the need to applaud the sentiments of Seanachai. Thankyou. We are all equally worthless. Except me, who am worthlesser. Thankyou for ignoring.
