1. I have seen (and documented and posted on this board) that the engineers in CM clear minefields via HE (demo charge- see this thread for screen shot ) If a demo charge-armed squad can clear an AT minefield, then why not arty? Or is the "demo charge" actually modelling the bangelore torpedo? in which case, would a 1m wide breach through an AT minefield be sufficient to consider it "cleared"? 2. 1. I hope you took plenty of pictures 2. When are you posting them?
3. Missed out on the first and am willing to try to get to this one!!! Count me in!
4. I am playing the excellent scenario Howard's Hornets and seeing some very impressive behavior from my troops (I am the brits in this one) First, I had an engineer squad with only 1 trooper armed with his rifle and a demo charge charge up to an 88 bunker, throw the charge, and while the charge was in the air, he surrendered to a nearby german squad. When the charge landed, the 88 was no more. I should took screen shots of that one!! The second instance is when one of my Shermans started to exit the beach, ran into an AT minefield. An engineer squad (with 2 demo's) was riding. The Sherman gets knocked out by a mine. The engineer squad bails, and while running for cover tosses a demo charge and clears the minefield. Unfortunately for a squad that was routing through the AT mines at the same time, as they took casualties from the demo charge. Sherman approaches minefield (mines yet to be discovered) Tankers" "Hey! What was that loud noise?! Let's get outta here!" Sappers: "We're outta here too!! FIRE IN THE HOLE!! FIRE IN THE HOLE!! FIRE IN THE HOLE!!" (Note demo charge and panicking squad) Sorry 'bout that!! (note smaller panicking squad) [ July 10, 2002, 01:41 AM: Message edited by: easy-v ]

6. GeneralSV is MIA Sent an e-mail to see if he is alive and kicking and recieved no response. Has any one talked to this guy?
7. I like the demo, and I suspect that SC will become my "beer and pretzels" wargame upon release. Beside, what other game can say that it comes with "French Escorts"
8. I've never participated, but if it is possible, I'd like to give this one a shot
9. How about non-soviet Poles? I would love to play some scenarios of "Free" Poles vs. invading Soviets. It always strikes me as odd that people forget (or intentionally NOT mention) that the Soviets invaded Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (they always remember Finland, though). BFD? Right? Well, maybe it can be developed as a niche wargaming sector. Like the battle of France in 1940 sort of used to be. France `40 always was looked as a walkover and rarely received any attention from the wargaming community until, IMHO, Crescendo of Doom (I think that's what it was). Let's see some Sino-Pole action in '39. I am certain that the Poles gave a good accounting of themselves (quick-somebody provide some examples, as I don't have any-due to lack of research) against the Soviets in 1939.
10. put the caffeine pills down and back slowly away from the pc...
11.
quote:
Originally posted by Roach: As far as I am aware for certain (and even then I am probably wrong!), the only units in the ETO that briefly wore the camouflage uniform were elements of the 30th Infantry Division and the 17th Engineer Battalion of the 2nd Armoured Division.

Yeah, what Roach said, and the uniform used the same "duck hunting" camo pattern printed on the late herring bone twill (HBT) uniform. I've seen these at gunshows, and I think US Cav makes a repro of them. The primary reason why they weren't implemented on a wide scale is that the GI's were accustomed to seeing SS and FJ in camo, and that at that point in time, introducing camo uniforms would only introduce a complicating factor. It was also felt that the then present OD uniform did an adequate job of blending in with the environment ...what you may have seen were someparatroopers (notably the pathfinders) spray painted their jump suits (they did not look like the mod in question). Of all branches of the infantry, you are more likely to see field customizations among the airborne
12. Sorry guys, I couldn't make it. My Saturday night ran into my Sunday afternoon. So I am voting for a "make up" to be scheduled.
13. Wouldn't "Attack/Defence Ratio" refer to just that? So if it is set to 100%, then the attacker would get, say 2000 pts vs. the defender's 2000pts, 150% would be 3000 vs 2000 etc.
14.
quote:
Originally posted by Michael emrys: But I fail to see how that addresses the present question. CM already incorporates the equivalent of hidden placement and, IMO, does it better. Michael

My point is that the first method, that of placing your counters on the mapboard, allowed for a degree of deception, something that CMBO models only in the misidentification of units in Fog of war mode. A spotted, but unidentified unit marker, in my experience, doesn't show up in CM unless your troops have either spotted or heard a unit moving in the vacinity of an actual enemy unit. Which is hardly deceptive, it's just modeling an aspect of the human element. A tactical ruse or dummy fortification, IMHO, wouldn't seem to be out of the parameters of CM, as pillboxes, which are fixed emplacements, are included. Don't forget that pillboxes and prepared fortifications were often camoflauged to look like something other than pillboxes, which could lead to misidentifcation. In this instance, I could see how this would be handled by the spotting rules of the game, where the bunker wouldn't show in the game until it was positively identified by friendly units. This is just one example of course. Another could be an abandondoned trenchline, which inexperienced or weary troops could mistakenly identify as occupied. Maybe pre-abandoned fortifications should be a unit added to the mix. It could provoke attacking units to firing prematurely. My post deals with tactical deceptive practices, not so much the operational level ones as Commissar is talking about.
15. In all fairness, didn't Squad Leader (the High Holy Original), utilizing concealment rules, allow for something like this (at least in spirit). IIRC, you masked your setup units with a counter that had a question mark on it. You were also allowed extra concealment counters to make "dummy stacks" ...or maybe that nueron died a horrible death and I am just off my rocker...
16. RAM, the micro-brewery? Will they allow such low-brows as CM'ers there? There is one near Northbrook, where I work, and it doesn't seem like a bad place. After all, they serve BEER. MMMMMMMMMMMMM.....BEER. Although their attempt at an IPA is kinda piss weak. CHICKS! I am there! How are we going to mark our rally point?
17.
quote:
Originally posted by MikeT: In my research for the Finnish mod I found this site: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/6139/ http://www.hkkk.fi/~yrjola/war/finland/armor/ Good source of info MikeT

Wow! That first site has some OUTSTANDING pics of the Finnish STuG's. And they are all immaculate.
18. The mods look great, except for the boots!! US infantry shoes were either russet brown and finished, or "roughed out" (rough side out, so they resembled the finish of the leather on Gulf war-type desert boots) But they weren't as dark as in CMBO, or on the mod.

20. Well, somebody set a time and place! Afterwards, we can send Cpt Wacky a frozen box of Whiteys as a consolation prize. OP is a good locale for me. I live in McKinley Park ('bout 2 miles west of Hyde Park), but still haunt the SW Burbs often
