  1. Okay. I'm seeing a different result here. Tried it again and got the same result. If anyone wants this extremely simple test setup, I'll e-mail it to you.
  2. It's not? I thought it stated somewhere in there that the stealth bonus increases the ability of the unit affected to avoid detection. Maybe not. The only other effect of "stealth" on a moving unit (that I'm aware of) is that it will stop when fired upon. I wish I could find that other thread I referred to earlier because, although still stated in general terms, it had more detail as to the effects of differing terrain between "sneak" and "move". However, I've searched using my member number and it has literally disappeared.
  3. okay, checked it one more time to be certain. I lost the original setup so I created a long strip of woods, 100 meters wide, emptied all ammo from each regular heer squad and their respective HQ units. US regular commander sat at the front end of the woods on a high rise (all ammo removed as well). All units padlocked. The two german units were ordered to "run" straight through the woods toward the observation point at the end. One heer squad HQ given +2 stealth bonus, other HQ no bonus. Running, the squad with the non-stealth bonus HQ was spotted earlier than the squad with the +2 HQ.
  4. Because it's not true? Think about it for a minute. If troops are running, they have abandoned all attempts at stealth. Most things in CM make sense once you understand what's going on. Michael</font>
  5. Well, the test I referred to in my previous post (as a matter of fact, I searched for it and cannot find the thread anywhere) compared two sets of troops in strips of "woods", "scattered trees", "brush", "open", etc., while sneaking, walking, running, crawling, and there was definitely a benefit gained through the use of an HQ with a stealth bonus (and an independent benefit from "sneak" alone, without the bonus of a HQ) as to the distance a unit could approach an enemy unit before being spotted. Again, when in open terrain, it made no difference: the only limitation on spotting was the visibility distance.
  6. McAuliffe - You were going to send me the map you had made for Stavelot at one time. Could you send it to me? agua@bellsouth.net
  7. re: remaining hidden after firing of towed guns - I do not know, HOWEVER, I did a set of tests about a year ago and the stealth bonus DOES definitely have an effect which varies with terrain at least with regard to infantry. If you look up my member # in search in the "tips and tricks" forum, the thread *might* be styled "crawl?" or something like that. But in any event, as I recalled, "sneak" and stealth bonus, whatever, makes no difference if your troops are in open terrain: they will be seen within the limits of visibility. However, there is a marked difference as to when a unit becomes visible in various terrain types dependent upon the presence of a stealth bonus. As with every other type of result computation in this game, it is not a static result but appears to be more a probability based thing within a range of possible values.
  8. Welcome! After you feel that you have the mechanics of operating the interface down and you've played around with the various units enough to know what they can do, if you then feel you're ready to take a serious approach to learning basic combined arms approaches, there is a set of five or six scenarios named "No rest for the weary" which are to be played sequentially as a "mini-campaign". They are small, short, provide a well-written and consistent story, and utilize a variety of units. You can find the set over at the Scenario Depot
  9. Ya, but if you want fog in CM, get the cheap GeForce.
  10. Just get a Geforce 2 or above. You can probably get a Geforce2 with 64mb DDR for realllllllly cheap nowadays.
  11. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the soldiers, dependent upon their skill level and varying levels of probability, scavange the heavier weapons (e.g., BAR, Stg44, mg34) from their fallen squadmates?
  12. May be naivety on my part, but if the quality of the posts on the forum are a measure of CM players, and I think to some extent those posts do reflect the quality of players, cheaters are likely few and far between in the CM community. I've never heard (or read, as the case may be) of a single rumor concerning anyone actually going into the data files and changing values (if that can even be done) in some manner the way it occurs in ALL FPS games.
  13. Man, this will sound really odd, but those really do make the terrain look too bad to use them. Very nice George, very, very nice, but the contrast is just too much.
  14. Yeah, expouding on what RW said, if I happen upon an older scenario created before the general awareness of the problem with the flak truck, I'll open up the scenario and substitute the lynx for those trucks.
  15. by Franko? The Depot links to the Manx's defunct Combat Missions site. I had it at one time but apparently didn't keep lost it in the transfer from one computer to the other. Thanks in advance.
  16. Yeah, the initial setup and plotting for the initial turn take quite a bit of time for me as well. Most espeically if I am playing defense in a QB. [edited because I thought it my be nice to add some commentary rather than simply quote McAuliffe .. doh!!] [ June 08, 2002, 11:32 AM: Message edited by: Agua ]
  17. Learning to control the units with the interface and how to use features like LOS tool, HQ spotting and the like? Not long at all. As to how to utilize the terrain and units appropriately for their tasks? Still learning.
  18. Re: PBEM - second guessing Ya. Agree completely here. I never play pbem because of this: too much trying to outwit yourself and obsessing with minutae.
  19. Ya, after setup, that sounds about right; 5-7 mins. I LOATHE games utilizing the timer though. It's just a distraction to me and makes me feel as if I'm under a constraint even though my orders will be completed within the time limit.
  20. Hear Hear!! An underappreciated, talented artist whose works fill my bmp folder. Thank you Gordo!
  21. Is that regular "grass", or is it some other type of terrain. I'm pretty sure its not spring or early wheat because in the screen shots on the wargamer site this tall vegetation exists in the same picture as the familiar golden/light tan wheat. There is also a screenshot on the Wargamer site of an SS squad running by a building. In that picture there is also a small section that looks like the familiar "flat grass" of CMBO. Now, that certainly could be taken from an early set of terrains, but it makes me wonder if this tall grass-like vegetation is some new type of terrain.
  22. Ya, I don't see why anyone would have trouble scrounging up $90 or so for the both of them.
  23. The computer is notorious for picking oddball combinations, so nothing is wrong with your CD if that is your concern. Personally, though I used to hate playing with computer picked forces, a couple weeks ago I had a blast playing extremely small battles (300 - 500 points) giving the AI +3 experience and 25% numerical bonus. Hmmmmm..... Think I'll take Uncommon Valor out and load up a qb.
  24. Wondered that myself, BUT notice in one of the screens, there is mature wheat in the same frame as the grass. Must be a new terrain type.
