ex-SS in post-war French Foreign Legion
CATguy replied to boyrecon's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Last I hear there was a recruiting station for the French Foreign legion in San Francisco. Also it is comprised of mostly ex-milatary types who in "my" opinion can not function in a civilian society. Just my opinion and something to weigh heavy upon since you end your US citizenship and belong to France after that.... just my opinion -
As for carrying any weapon they are all heavy!!!! and think if you have to carry 100 rds or more of ammo then it is real heavy!

MGs in game don't live up to the real deal!!
CATguy replied to Dbroe's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I find the mg teams to be the most powerful weapon on the board. The HMG 42 team is absolutley deadly. What these mg teams do is not cause casualties but suppress so my infantry teams can move. Any time I spot a MG I consider it a serious threat. The vickers is another nice one and the 30 cal is very rugged. Also another thing that mg's are good for is their high ammo count. this allows them to fire for long periods while saving your squads ammo. I almost always have several teams even when there is armor on the map. They are great at buttoning up vehicles. They are a tremendous value! -
Question RE: German tank design
CATguy replied to Jasper's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
riding on a tank is perfectly fine. Some tanks on the rear would get real hot since this is where the engine would be. Would be ok in the winter but summer your boots might melt! -
why no German 37mm antitank gun?
CATguy replied to blindsey's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
By mid 44 the pak37 and the ATR were obsolete. Sure there may have been a few on the west front in 44 but I think production had been stopped several years before on the the pak37 and probably 4 years before on the ATR. If any were used they were probably used by 2nd line troops in a limited capacity. O.T.: I saw a Boys ATR for sale at a gunstore in town here( Along with other WWII mg's). the receiver had been cut so it was just a show piece and its date was 1939. -
The BB as a weapons system is completely obsolete. They are extremely expenisive to operate and they are huge targets of opportunity. There are better ways to deliver the firepower needed. This weapons system saw its heydays in the 40's and will never see it again. I wont even go into the morale issues the navy had with the BB's in the 80's and early 90's.

how about something reliable and grand as a sherman, Crown Royal!

they should have been able to target with area fire, were your crews under fire? they are open top.

Poor accuracy of AT guns and Tank guns
CATguy replied to illo's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
2000 yards requires precision to hit anything even today and this is over a mile! The 5000 yard hit is very unlikely since this would be almost 3 miles! -
Win/Loss record. Are you General material??
CATguy replied to JediJobu's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Yes I have a group of friend who keep a tally on wins and losses, currently I am losing but having loads of fun! -
Actually I would suspect to see no penalty since there is plenty of room to manuever to fire and load the rifle unlike the cramped conditions of a tank and the limited visibility.

There wouldn't be a 180 pg manual if...
CATguy replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The manual is great!!!! rarely do you get a game with a detailed manual anymore. Usually it is on a PDF file or something. For such a deep game the manual could almost be twice as thick... -
I love the mad minute but as the Germans that 155 is brutal. Hitdorf on the Rhine can be scary for the US and is fun online. Action at Komersheidt is another that is fun. ohh hell most of them have been except for chance encounter that has been played to death!!

Tank Plt vs Tank Plt...what would be a fair fight?
CATguy replied to Black Five's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Sherman M4a3 with 76 vs Panthers. I know that perhaps the panthers might have the edge but there would be 5 against 4 and an experienced sherman crew can be deadly. Any body for a TCP/IP? -
I hope they work out all the kinks in the patch soon

Bugs??? I guess I have come to expect bugs in games these days but the bugs that are found in these latest versions are nothing compared to laying out the ole hex grid maps and trying to round up players for a full weekend of ASL or something with 20 million dice rolls! I compliment BTS and their dedication and I suspect it may be near impossible to be totally accurate in eliminating bugs... -
OK, so I'm an old fart - Is anybody else? (O/T)

32 here and have been wargaming since 1975 with my first copy of Tactics II. I still have that copy and love it. As for all my other wargames I have mostly given them away since they had been collecting dust since I had been married. The fellas who got my wargames are now thinking of getting rid of them also since he does nothing but computer wargames.... -
Greek Mercenaries who fought alongside Alexander were perhaps the greatest soldiers of all time. just my two cents and if there were SS in Vietnam they would be middle aged or more by the time the 60's rolled around...
-
I/O error: what kind of Nonsense is this with the SS in Vietnam and such... the French were in control of Vietnam and the fantasy thought of using SS veterans would be ludicrous! As for the SS that branch of the German army was more political than military. They might have had the best weapons and the best supplies but the bulk of their formations were little better than a green american unit.

Unstoppable Juggernauts (OT but Historical)
CATguy replied to Terence's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
ohhhh my... having been in AVR and been involved in maintenance of M113, Bradleys, and M1's I can say they are far superior to anything else out there in terms of Maintenance manhours involved for each machine. Also the crews are also highly trained in maintenance of their own vehicle and at school have basically gone through a whole school on maintenance. To say the least our armor crews are very high in Elan`..... and yes desert storm was a good test for the Abrams and it performed superbly with a high availibility rate in the 90's... -
Psw 234/1 that spouts a pilliar of fire
CATguy replied to Brian R's topic in Combat Mission - Tech Support
yes same thing happened on the first turn and on the bridge also. Kinda cool looking, it was like a fire bridge to Valhala for the poor crew. I suspect a graphics error of some sort though -
Yes the shermans are more than capable of destroying any german tank and their myths that go along with them.
-
One can only surmise your age is your reason why you think this way... ask your parents about this topic and they will tell you the brutal truth of war....

Immobilized Tanks
CATguy replied to Sir Wamers Kahlenberg's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
10 mins? well... depends on the type of damage I suppose... from my experience with damaged tracks a minimum of 1 hour that mostly turns to 4 hours... yuk! cant imagine doing it in a hostile environment.
