  1. A weapon such as the browning 30cal would be what the "rifle" squad would work with as a tool. It would not necesarily be organic and as for historical TO&E's it was not that way for the US. The BAR served this purpose and quite well. I for one would dread lugging a 30cal around at the pace of a rifle squad!!!!(they are atrocious!!!)
  2. The browning 30cal has not seen any changes real changes since 1919 except for the air cooled version (late 30's) which was not as effective as a fixed placed weapon as the liquid cooled was in rate of fire. The mg34 was a superb weapon and served the Wehrmacht well in the early war years. The Mg42 was revolutionary in design and the manufacture process was simplified by stamping instead of machining the receiver, block, stock...etc. To dispell a myth, the M60 was not based on the mg42 and in comparison are totally dissimilar in design and concept, but to be fair it is quite possible that the designers looked upon the mg42 with favor but that is where the similarity ends. well I could keep talking but I like to keep these short...
  3. Yep another bug other than a halftrack that is brittle as Titanic's steel hull... I found that my Flamethrower can not even make 30 meters in the face of 3 30cals and a whole rifle company... what the heck? BTW the game was near perfect when I first got it back in Aug of 2000 and now with the final patch it is 99% flawless.... I say move on and lets see the East Front work progress!!! My hard drive/disk drive is getting bored with CM1
  4. Guy Sajer?? A great work of Fiction. As for the TV show, hmmm would be a hard sell...
  5. what no horses! no bicycles! my gosh! what next! no laundry unit!! or maintenance unit!!! dam! what about the payroll or graves registration unit!! come to think of it what about administration unit, nothing better than shooting up a bunch of office silly's...... slippery slope here....
  6. The war on the eastern front is definetly the most savage and cruelest conflict ever waged in recorded history. The soviets lost over 49 million people due to combat deaths, starvation, extermination, and a whole plague of other calamities. As for the steorotypes of the Soviet soldier, in most respects he was just like other soldiers in other amries. The fought, died, and bled the same. The only respect to diffrence was the clear disregard for the individual and everything for the state (motherland). It was the utter desperate fight for survival that a the russian soldier had to endure. A great wealth of information has poured out of the former Soviet Union, so as to shed light on the facts. If anybody wants to question the 49 million I will gladly forward the thesis on this that was done in the early 90's.
  7. "Action at Komerscheidt" one of my favorite ones for online play. Very tough for both sides and a nail biter to the end... there are a ton more but this one sticks out in my mind as a good one.
  8. Aside from the various surplus stuff you could pick up when I was young, My fav is a 1944 mauser. A tad beat up but with all matching serial #s and still a good rifle to shoot. My second favorite is a M1 garand (rehash from chilean army, but WW2 surplus). An excellent shooter and one could see the advantage in firepower one would have over the mauser (bolt action).
  9. I discovered a odd bug today. While playing a quick battle my sherman was able to take out a panther! Sadly though I lost my sherman to a schreck! what is this! As the game progresses and I had no tanks left I thought I was gonna get smashed! But my infantry pulled through and took out the last remaining german tank! what a bug!!! Then I had this flamethrower who sadly was trying to move in the open in plain view of 699 HMG's and several 105 spotters and he didnt even get 2 feet!!! what is this!!! lets see what else happened?? I for one think this game is way too realistic and this "realistic" bug must be taken care of in future patches please!!!
  10. Decoys were used by both all sides in all theatres extensivly were enemy observation was possible. The decoy was as simple as a log representing a gun to the elaborate ones used by the allies in England to confuse the actual landing zones for D-day
  11. When I have little or no armor I dont fret I just have to adjust tactics accordingly. I use smoke where possible. Diversion tactics, and use close quarter combat where possible. I have found that when my opponent has tanks but little infantry I know I will win. The only time I have a problem is when the country side is wide open and no place to move in concealment, then I have a problem.
  12. Just loved Tactics II. Played it to death when I was young. It was square based but the concept for me at the time was unique and challenging. It opened up a whole new world of wargaming to me
  13. I too have lived on or near dirt roads in the past and yes I had no real problem navigating them. But you have to take into account the weight of your vehicle ( subaru is only 2000 lbs) and the amount of traffic on the road. A heavily traveled "wet" dirt or unimproved road will be a quagmire in no time at all and usually any drainage that was there before is wiped out by the repeated traffic.
  14. Yep VT = variable time. The shells have got a little radar in the nose that makes the shell detonate whhen they get close to the gound (ie. 20m) May need to rephrase that... no radar in the nose there just a variable fuse set depending on adjustment for range, elevation, and windage.
  15. In all reality most AFV during WWII could not withstand a flamethrower attack. Granted enough of the burning liquid had to get on the vehicle, but if enough was applied the fumes, heat, smoke and other nasty combusibles would get in small areas, burn vital components and generally cause havoc. Modern AFV can withstand an attack like this since they have seperate ventilation systems for chem warfare and the like....depending on the ratio of mixtures and the gases and liquids used you could either make it real hot for burning or you could throw burning liquid or gel at the target. this would be quite nasty and would bring down a king tiger no problem if there was no infantry nearby of course
  16. I find the US squads to be the best. When I play them I usually engage the enemy at 100 plus meters so as to stay out of effective range of their smg's if they are equiped with them. I usually can cause suppresion and come in for the kill. When Playing as the Germans I wait for less than 100 meters so I can deliver raw firepower quickly with my smg squads. I always need to have some rifle squads around to help compliment the firepower at different ranges. Of course HMG's help out here as well....
  17. Sitting behind some woods with my VG platoon several AT guns and some HMG's I felt confident of stopping the allied advance. That was until a crocodile showed up. This little bugger proceeded proceeded to make mince meat of my guys and in a span of a few turns everybody was routing or captured... I hope I never see one again!!!!
  18. Does anybody remember Clash of Steel, Pacific War and War in Russia? I played the hell out of them in the early 90's. Then came along panzer general which I played to death but wasnt very historical. Loved the Steel Panther series and played those a lot also. Of course there was the CC series as well but CM takes the cake!
  19. You really thought that was a good war movie? I thought it was pure propaganda. A whole squad wiping out companies of VC? Just total fantasy. Yes, Lee Ermy is great but it would be better to see him in Boys in Company C or Full metal jacket that was more in tune with what really happened in Vietnam...
  20. There was a good size Italian army in Russia. Defeated near Stalingrad and virtually eliminated there...

  22. not owning my copy of panzerblitz any more I think the low rating was due to the effect of the counter representing a certain number of gun like a battery. Ohh those were the days! I think I got that for xmas in 1978....
  23. I heard that old carriers were being sold as scrap surplus in India...
  24. I find rockets too much money since they have low ammo counts. Yes they pack a wallop and it is fun to watch but if all you do is shred a platoon and maybe destroy a vehicle and he is still coming what then? those points might have better been used as 81mm mortar or something else
