  1. Well, they may have given the off map arty a better rating because the shell is coming down nearly straight down (almost 90 degrees to the ground.) This gives it a much better fragmentation pattern compared to a flat trajectory shell (on map.) Why Hummel is better I don't know. Perhaps it uses different ammo (thinner casing?) One thing to keep in mind about on map vs. off map is that the on map is a lot more accurate and therefore likely to do more damage to a particular unit even if the blast is a bit lower.
  2. I think mortar shells have to travel a certain distance before they arm themselves anyway, so they might not go off if they something right after they left the tube.
  3. Computer Games gave CMBB a really good and I believe fair review. Just read it last night.
  4. It was pretty obvious to me that the reviewer hadn't really played either CMBB or CMBO for more than a few minutes and probably didn't know much about WW II in general, therefore his review is worthless (IMO). [ December 14, 2002, 08:03 PM: Message edited by: StellarRat ]

  6. Geez, after typing enough responses to this post (which was settled about 236 posts ago) I have a hard time believing that Steve is even bothering to reply anymore. He could have written half the manual for CM3 by now. Thanks for your admirable patience Steve.
  7. "You don't want to purchase Strumtigers." "I don't want to purchase Strumtigers." "You want to go home and re-evaluate your counter-attack." "I want to go home and re-evaluate my counter-attack"
  8. Personally, I see nothing wrong with 15+ minutes to recover. Has anyone here ever tried dragging around 50 lbs. for any distance? Remember, we're not talking about stuff that fits neatly into a backpack here. I think it would be very tiring even if you weren't under fire. These guys are carrying a big ass gun, tripod and several hundred rounds of ammo. That isn't light. Maybe someone ought to go out in a field or woods and try this just to see how long it takes them to get their wind back. But I'm not getting muddy to prove my point!
  9. They don't stop LOS because they are considered (rightly or wrongly) to be units just like tanks and therefore too small in scale to block LOS when compared to other non-unit type object (like house, woods, etc...)

  11. I have a Gainward 4200 with 128 megs and have had zero problems with anything. Running the 40.whatever drivers now.
  12. I'm having a bizarre problem download the real color mod. Everytime I download it it says "241 megs downloaded", but then when I look that the final file it's only 169 megs and zip tells me that it's a split or incomplete file! Help!
  13. Hmm...better read this old post before you go any further... Dobermines [ November 13, 2002, 08:13 PM: Message edited by: StellarRat ]
  14. Plus the terms "strategy" and "tactics" have different meanings in civilian and military circles.
  15. Are the foxholes in CMBB just holes or are they considered to have overhead protection? Were foxholes with overhear cover even used in WWII? If they were used and not available in CMBB, will BFC be adding overhead cover variety to the next version of the game? These would obviously give a lot more protection to infantry from artillery in the woods and against timed and proximity fused artillery. 16. OK, well if you did that and it didn't help I suggest moving this to the Tech Support Forum and maybe someone with more knowledge can help you. Do you have the latest NVidia drivers for your card?
  17. Adjust the gamma correction in the advanced settings for the card.
  18. Actually, my understanding is that this is called "Grand Strategy". While maneuvering/positioning/supplying units before a battle is "strategy". Am I nit-picking? [ November 11, 2002, 02:02 PM: Message edited by: StellarRat ]
  19. Strategy is what happens before a battle, tactics is what happens on the battlefield. Generally, good strategy will do more for winning a war then good tactics. Example: If you manage to get a 4 to 1 advantage of troops and ammo to a battle because you have planned your troops movements and supplies carefully then even if the enemy general is a master tactician you're still probably going to kick his butt (all other things being equal.)
  20. Yeah, but when they become unbroken you can't get the weapons back! So, I'd rather have them drag their weapons around even if it is unrealistic. Not being able to re-crew weapons is unrealistic too (and worse for game play.)
  21. I think in "real life" the pattern of fire can be set by the FO. I believe they have several possible spacings to call upon, but I don't know if this was true for all nations. Imagine some armies were just happy to have the artillery land anywhere on the target area.
  22. I killed a Panther with a flamethrower once. And another time had a single flamethrower wipe out three squads of advancing infantry firing from a stone building. They are very effective when used correctly.
  23. Running is very handy in meeting engagements when you want to get to certain piece of terrain and setup before the enemy get there.
  24. What got up his butt? Geez. It's never crashed on me and the only bug I've found is when I minimize and restore sometimes I lose the frame around the interface. Sure there are a couple of minor gameplay issues, but nothing that is a show stopper. Weird. Sounds like he has some hardware issues going on and is blaming CMBB.
  25. I can vouch for Agua too! But I don't have ICQ.
