Right, I've worked it out.
It's either or both of these things:
- If you create a PBEM++ username longer than 8 characters
- if you have an underscore in the username
If either (or both) of the above is true, although the game goes through the motions of creating a challenge without apparent errors, it silently fails in the backend and does not create the game. Similarly if you accept a challenge.
Thanks to Declan for his assistance.

okay, having tried starting PBEM++ games unsucessfully now in both CMBN and CMRT, I think the function is rogered. Will submit a support ticket.

I'm trying to create a PBEM++ quick battle with CMBN 4.04 (BFC). I get to select the quick battle parameters, then select '2 player automated PBEM++' option, then password, then 'save email game' - I log in to see if it's been displayed for my opponent but it never shows on the PBEM++ challenges page. Any ideas chaps?

I doubt this game will run well with the machine specs you've listed, specifically the intel graphics. It runs well with a discrete video card.
However, it should at least run. Someone may chime in on some things to try

I can't think of a logical reason why you'd move out the mods folder prior to patching.

xps 15's are excellent. I've had mine for nearly 8 years now.

and the wiener is.... wolfgang500
Well done sir!
I installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2015- 2022 Redistributable (x86) on my friend's win10 machine and CM Normandy.exe 4.04 version (BFC) started working. @BFCElvis @Schrullenhaft
Huzzah!

Thanks Schrull.
Vanilla Windows Defender on Win10 22H2. I had already added a process exception to CM Normandy.exe. Note, there is no additional game exectuable these days, just CM Normandy.exe, which is present after installation. I checked with file explorer after install and all the game brz's, scenario files etc are present.
QuoteThere are no C++ or .Net dependencies with the CM games to my knowledge.
Certainly true prior to the new slitherine pbem++ code. Now it seems that code is included in the main executable for the BFC version of 4.04 but I remember seeing some extra files, possibly dll's in the steam version of Normandy. Anyway I will see if 4.03 works... cheers

there is definitely a problem with the 4.04 game exe on some people's windows machines. I spent a couple of hours troubleshooting a friend's new CMBN big bundle purchase yesterday - it won't run at all, no splash screen, nothing. Yet his CMRT and CMFB installs run fine. Today I'm going to substitute the older 4.03 exe into his install and see if it runs - bet it does. Will update later on.
edit: I wonder if some c++ or .net dependency libraries are missing from the install or host machine as well..?
Also, Elvis: This is not a simple activation error as you advised my friend via helpdesk. The game has been successfully activated and will still not work.

now go and blow stuff up One of the best if not the best in the series. Cheers

There is. Page 30 of the most up to date manual. Depending on your installation you may not have the most up to date manual.
Many thanks Declan. Yes the latest all in one installer for CMBN has the old game engine 4 manual, dating back to 2016.

a written, concise guide on PBEM++ would be nice (assuming it doesn't exist)...

Is the only way to do it to go through all of my orders and find the original?
yep
QuoteWhy is there no direct link from the patch or product page?
Discussing Ukraine far more important than website improvements

just a note regarding PBEM++ registration. The system doesn't allow non-alphanumeric characters in the username. I have an underscore in my slitherine username but the in-game registration system rejects it. As the serials are registered at Slitherine under the same username, I suspect this may be problematic to fix. Email sent to slith support.

have you added the game executable to your antivirus whitelist? Give that a try if not done already.

huzzah! Great to see revisionism in its best form.

... or do sumfink

Right. And don't call me Shirley.

I'd hazard a guess it's the slitherine pbem servers playing up again. You may get more traction by posting in their forums.
Just Purchased CBCW - will not run

if the OP is still around, try installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015- 2022 Redistributable (x86). That solved the issue for me - games with PBEM++ built in require this, although BFC don't mention it anywhere.
