  1. So when someone collected the final load that indicates one or more previous loads. : ) I am glad it has done well for BF .. if not overly keen on paying the taxman so much. Next time can we have an EU depot please! : )
  2. I have been using a Honey* each turn to fire down a road at night and from what I can see the variance from targetting point at range is considerable. As he is firing continually I ssem to have made a big dent in the 6000+ rounds : ) Stuart*
  3. Delivered today all threee copies in a box weighing 4lbs but all in mint condition. So I may have got away with a single copy being slipped through the system : ( Paid $22 for the shipping - how does that square with single shipping costs? The manual weighs 215gms which is say 7ounces and Steve picked up a final load of 2000lbs of manuals which means ...
  4. Perhaps I should have been explicit in saying "manage to colonise the oceans". It would seem to me that it as good a trial run as we can manage and is eminently sensible for mankind to colonise the oceans if the land is possibly going to be needed for crops, becomes more inhospitable, the atmosphere is crap. etc
  5. I thought he went to a dealership and sold Volt cars between dealers to take the Federal $7500 money before selling it on.! If we cannot mange the ocean when we have already arrived on the planet and have all possible resources plus breathable atmosphere the concept we could colonise alien planets from light years distance seems stark raving bonkers. Given the South Pacific could contain all the land continents it does seem bizarre to be looking skywards.
  6. Pegasus Bridge - Benouville D-Day 1944 (Raid) by Will Fowler (Paperback - 10 Jun 2010) John Howard in The Pegasus Diaries The Pegasus and Orne Bridges http://www.pegasus-bridge.co.uk/ And then apart from the books we can do the questions This test consists of 15 multiple choice and 5 short answer questions. Multiple Choice Questions Directions: Circle the correct answer. 1. How many divisions constituted the British airborne in 1943, according to Chapter 3? a) Two. Six. c) Four. d) One. 2. What did Howard insist all the men in his company do? a) Participate in some kind of sport. Watch war movies. c) Train at hand to hand combat every day. d) Speak German. 3. How far were most of the paratroopers from the bridges after.....
  7. Short term economically maybe but it made BF's reputation & support rock solid. Cunning Japanese ploy. : )
  8. If you drive along the length of a wire fence - the wire fence remains in place behind the tank. Very annoying if you want to clear obstacles. May also apply to wooden fences but I do not know that.
  9. My initial feeling is that in wooded and lumpy terrian the HMG's were not in there optimal environment, and perhaps badly commanded to let the enemy approach to within 40 yards. However having said that the guy was obviously a hero.
  10. Given the historical nature and the desire for accuracy I do get just a little peeved that the Imperial measurements in use in WW2 are ignored for Nato like numbers - but only for some items! MMG 1919 is shown as a 7.92mm .... but most of the US kit is Imperial. And as for changing the British 3" and the 25pdr I think it does a disservice to those reading WW2 histories were the correct terminology is used. It just seems ahistoric for the sake of it. Not a must do job but just it seems so wrong. : )
  11. US Army manual .50 calibre HMG Range at which there is a 50-50 chance of a hit: Tripod mounted firing bursts 9-15 rounds Point[man] target 700 metres Vehicle 1000 metres Area 1600 metres Cupola mounted stationary vehicle , 9-15 rounds Man 500 metres Vehicle 600 metres Area 1000 metres Cupola mounted in moving vehicle firing 15- 30 rounds Area target 300 metres Range at which there is a 30% chance of a hit on squad/platoon 500 metres. Unfortunately it is a graphic and is not that informative as to cover or attitude of soft targets. Lethality is greater than MMG but chance to hit should be similar. Incidentallly maximum distance for grazing fire is given as 800 metres which they define as i metre from the ground. Maximum range 6800 metres!
  12. 100-150metres I would expect a lot of misses. There are stats somewhere for chances in RL.
  13. £37.89 in customs and clearance fee : ( Hopefully they will be delivered tomorrow.
  14. Well not having a linky I have done some more digging. I am having trouble with converting the rifle velocity figures to brick hardness details to penetration. The strongest brick I have found [1899 source] could stand 9700lbs per square inch whilst a good hard brick would be about 4000lbs. There is also the nature of bricks in thta you can have soft bricks - which are fairly porous and if soaked for 24 hours take on 25% of water and hard bricks that absorb less than 5%. I do wonder if Afghanistani bricks are the softer variety being hand made probably, and possibly mud. So what happens in CM:SF may not be reliable for translating to western Europe. The US source suggests 12inch for a two storey house and if a more important building like a warehouse [?] 20" [500mm]. Stone is 20" whtever the type, add an extra story and it is another 4" for both brick and stone. Bear in mind that there would have to be internal walls or supporting piers over a certain length of wall, and lintels plus timber for flooring and tying the walls across. I stayed in a French cottage where the centre beam was at least 2 ft square probably of oak . Here is a non-armoured 0.5" bullet against 18" earth at 3100fps. http://earthbagbuilding.wordpress.com/2010/12/31/bullet-resistance-of-compressed-earth/ And then the marines demonstrate their weapons. No commentary but I assume they would be wanting to use AP as it is to demonstrate penetration. The building they are shooting up would count as a shed given it merely has a single brick or block skin. I would think 12" brick would be the minimum in Europe and probably 16". The test shows going to 45 degrees means the GPMG cannot penetrate single brick at what seems very close range. No it may not be AP- I am no expert on ammo though I do understand buildings. The 0.5" HMG is of course a bit of an exception : )
  15. That undoubtedly explains the CM BN infantries desire to take on armoured vehicles with MMGs etc. : ) womble do you have the linkies or thread name?
  16. In one thread someone opined that a rifle bullet would easily penetrate a double brick wall. I was a little doubtful and asked my ex-Army F-i-l and he was doubtful also. A little searching finds this: http://ingunowners.com/forums/general_firearms_discussion/145187-range_report_penetration_testing_of_residential_brick_walls_pic_heavy.html Repeated shots to the same area where effective but then they are not solid bricks, they are not doubled and mortared, and they were shot at close range. I cannot say I recall how 1930's French bricks were made or the the way they were used so this is not a conclusive item
  17. From my interesting piece on vision from the General Forum today : )
  18. Make the assumption you have hit the edge of minefield and retrace route seems favourite. However you may wish to use the mark One knife blade technique. I know the Australians when bored in Torbruk took to raiding the enemy lines to liberate mines for more needy people. Assuming that MGs's or mortars are certain to fire is also a moot point. It may be a left over. or a no longer covered area. Running around does not sound favourite.
  19. c3k - good one : ) I think we can safely lay the credit to Webster who was the standardised dictionary for the US rather like Doc Johnson in the UK - but more so. I do not know if Webster was trying to simplify English - I suspect he was. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webster%27s_Dictionary
  20. I think you are probably right that something like that is not far away. We already have the voice commands for the PC games so this would not be a huge step. The AI might suck a bit but yeah I think it could be a goer. Retro-fit to CMBN : ) Doing the right accent when playing the Axis ... ouch.
  21. It was a toss-up between Australia and the US : ) BTW I am curious why you specify the loooo...ong jacket. I am obviously missing something here. DO tell.
  22. I am getting a little peeved about commercial organisations requiring you to join Twitter. So: "Whilst you may find Twitter wonderful the chances of me signing up to an American company who routinely provides the security services with information under the Patriot Act are zero. One is left wondering what would have happened if the incumbent power had rode out the storm and then asked for details of Egyptian tweeters. " You can imagine it. Court case and all the info spilled over 'cos its Twitter policy. And just in case you think you know what the Patriot Act covers - you don't http://www.zdnet.com/blog/igeneration/senator-the-real-patriot-act-is-classified/10286?tag=nl.e539
