  1. I had a retired neighbour who had chemo - probably prolonged his life by less than a couple of years but as it fried his brain a tad and he had very poor memory for current things so his wife had the joy of living with a childlike creature until his death. Chemo side effects are not widely appreciated, http://www.nhs.uk/news/2008/04April/Pages/Chemotherapyseffectsonthebrain.aspx In my opinion the brain is the person so losing that ahead of the body is hugely more painful to the family and friends. She, on the other hand, has survived two rounds of chemo quite well - so far.
  2. I have just downloaded the Kalach batttle in the series. Coo what a professional approach those guys have. I don't think I have ever seen a briefing and map as good anywhere else. It does look fairly serious to play so I will look later in the week before deciding whether to play a human at WeBoB or the AI. Just have 4 pesky battles to complete first.
  3. Fairly cheap and it saves diesel/petrol and makes for a safer drive http://www.airtab.com/en/35 Not just rigs either.
  4. : ) He who shouts loudest must be right! Helps to wrap a national flag around you at the same time - make sure it is the right country flag! Any red flag would be a no-no.
  5. I have never won it as the British - nought for two. However lets face it having reinforcements arrive under fire is just plain bad design and regrettably it keeps turning up in scenarios.
  6. : ) Ok your right .... I suppose the Germans were the leaders in small infantry tacticsthroughout the war - but then they did have more opportunity to evolve and test. And more reason.
  7. That is a cracking article. Makes me even more convinced that people should have a finite amount of cover and that their life choices are relevant. If all men are equal in a democracy for voting, tax laws then having the same medical rights would seem reasonable. Rather like proven with dogs fairness is seen as an important part of being in the pack/society.
  8. From the Beeb It does seem to me that healthcare is an open pit in which any civilisation can pour unlimited money. I am not totally sure but my gut feeling is that it is probably a ruinous way to go - probably as useful as military science in not leading to anything productive. When you consider the improved infrastructure/energy resources that would be more beneficial to the US overall it does seem dumb. Healthcare particularly does rile me as man is born to die and delaying it at huge cost seems to be daft economically if "humane". Analogous to us pouring money into clunkers to extend their usefulness. Wasting assets should be recognised as such. Medical science will continue to invent more complicated and expensive ways to deal with even more illnesses. A line needs to be drawn as to what a state can be expected to cover, and what people can spend on their medical hobby. After some thought a cure. Perhaps every citizen is given a notional sum to pay for healthcare - to last them their life. As it is their "money" that they are spending then they will be cautious about wasting it. They will, if sensible, avoid dangerous sports, poor eating habits, unhealthy sexual partners. Once their allotment is up the state has no further aid to give them and they can spend their own savings. Illnesses covered would not include lifestyle choices like plastic surgery, IVF treatment, psychiatric etc. Given the uneducated masses and the scare-mongering to use drugs it would seem advertising should be banned. In any event items bought would be for real cash. The notional state cover would be for emergency treatment/hospital and life prolonging treatment up to the limit.
  9. This is not the winner but I like its style
  10. Husband takes his wife to play her first game of golf.....Unfortunately, the wife promptly whacked her first shot right through the window of the biggest house adjacent to the course. The husband cringed, 'I warned you to be careful! Now we'll have to go up there, find the owner, apologize and see how much your lousy drive is going to cost us.' So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A warm voice said, 'Come on in.' When they opened the door they saw the damage that was done: glass was all over the place, and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near the broken window. A man reclining on the couch asked, 'Are you the people that broke my window?' 'Uh...yeah, sir. We're really sorry about that,' the husband replied. 'Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you... You see, I'm a genie, and I've been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now that you've released me, I'm allowed to grant three wishes. I'll give you each one wish, but if you don't mind, I'll keep the last one for myself.' 'Wow, that's great!' the husband said. He pondered a moment and blurted out, 'I'd like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life.' 'No problem,' said the genie 'You've got it, it's the least I can do. And I'll guarantee you a long, healthy life!' 'And now you, young lady, what do you want?' the genie asked. 'I'd like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the world,' she said. 'Consider it done,' the genie said. 'And your homes will always be safe from fire, burglary and natural disasters!' 'And now,' the couple asked in unison, what's your wish, genie?' 'Well, since I've been trapped in that bottle and haven't been with a woman in more than a thousand years, my wish is to have sex with your wife.' The husband looked at his wife and said, 'Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune, and all those houses. What do you think?' She mulled it over for a few moments and said, 'You know, you're right. Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn't mind, but what about you, honey?' 'You know I love you sweetheart,' said the husband. I'd do the same for you!' So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other in every way. After about three hours of non-stop sex, the genie rolled over and looked directly into her eyes and asked, 'How old are you and your husband?' 'Why, we're both 35,' she responded breathlessly. 'NO S***.' He said, 'Thirty-five years old and you both still believe in genies?' I laugh every time I read it
  11. Its a very tough scenario, And I suspect designed for repeated play as winning first time out would be miraculous.
  12. In fact assault boats are such a complete pain in the ass for players, let alone designers, that everyone is better off if they are never used. Bridges also have some problems so try not to make them too crucial in a scenario. Certainly larger bridges have freaky firing lines which defy physics, and as for units toppling off bridges and then driving around road blocks ......... does make a mockery. Have fun
  13. I read your comment with some amazement as with most major organisations change is actually very hard to create and six years is not a long time given the heavy staff turnover and competion for market space. In the context of the game I am sure the German Battalion forces do change, not hugely but the weaponry becomes heavier and to compare a '39 Battalion with a '45 I actually think is significant in weaponry if not in man organisation. Tactics will be centred around the weaponry - and also the enemies capabilities - but possibly that is a higher level than you were thinking of. I suspect you could argue that at platoon/squad level there was relatively small change in tactics - which is almost a case of saying man-to-man fighting has changed little over the last 4 thousand years once man had ranged fire weapons and a club : )
  14. Its the way you have saved it. You have tournament locked it. I hope you have saved a copy normally for further tinkering. I have just overwritten the Tutorial off the CD as a Tournamnet Scenario and rendered it unplayable as the Germans are set for first turn : )
  15. Read the tech section. Do a search of the archive for people suffering the same problems.
  16. Its good to advertise here, far more take-up is likely even if you do add it to the various repositories. I keep meaning to see if there is a home of rated maps ....... I would like a copy and I will send you my e-mail address using the Forum's e-mail system for privacy. : )
  17. Wiki - probably a good place for an overview
  18. I assume you are talking about Western society here as other civilisations have seen representations of sex as pretty normal. So post Rome and the coming of Christianity/Judaism sex has had a rockier time. Unfortunately the USA is perhaps the worst nation for violence being depicted in the media* whilst also having the incredible hypocrisy of banning sex from the main stream media. The resulting largest porno industry in the world with its products "freely" available is perhaps a great tribute to the power of the Church and the Mafia. Ultimately though the Churchs are there[in business] to guide and control their flock and control of sexuality is a biggie. Violence - darn useful for spreading the message. Think Crusades, Albigensians, Huguenots, Calvinists, Lutherans etc. But this was violent conduct for a purpose not for peoples amusment. Cock-fighting and prize-fighting, bull baiting etc existed but in a sense they are sports unlike watching hundreds of murders a year on TV and Video. The rise of TV - and cheap nasty entertainment is a recent event. * Japan would get a special mention here but it is important to remember that they have a very cohesive society with strong internal rules on acceptable behaviour. The US in contrast has a very much more open society with probably hardly any cohesion in a dog eat dog society.
  19. I think there is a more general "problem" with society where everything is sugar-coated to make it palatable to the public - the politicians interest, to schmaltzy/dramatic for the media to feed the "masses". Plain speaking would be a pleasant change and also establish boundaries to stop wasted effort. MIA - the chances of the Iraqui's not parading a prisoner if he had survived would have been negligible. The pussy-footing around seems to show this desire to please regardless of commonsense.
  20. I have perhaps 20 books that might fit and I do not collect them at all. Can you specify if its tactics, derring-do, areas that you are intersted in. I am currently reading an IWM book on North Africa which is very broad in its coverage but exceedingly well-written and interesting.
  21. Excellent stuff DAF. It is amazing that after all these years there is still stuff to be learned. Such as in CMAK a mortar platoon requires the HQ mortar to be alive for the other two to do indirect fire orders. And they can only take the orders from the mortar HQ. : ) But then how often are mortar platoons bought or in a scenario..
  22. And a large community of regular players. Not that obvious by reading this forum but if you look at the links there are several clubs. I play with We Band of Brothers with around 200 members.
