1. ***DEAD SERIOUS*** Just like with a real firearm, a new student to the skill should ALWAYS undergo strict teaching of the proper care and ESPECIALLY mindset required of a responsible firearms owner. (Notice what I said: That means even full adults should not be handed a weapon they do not have the skills or mental attitude to handle responsibly. Age is not the most important factor) So, to that end, make sure that the child is given a FIRM grasp of what exactly proper firearms ownership means. Just as if the BB gun was real, he should NEVER point them at any living target. In my case, I was first "trained" by my father in the safety and care of firearms with a BB gun. It is a relatively safe way to teach one's son or daughter the skill. Do not just give a child a BB gun unattended.
2. Wow, people! (responding to earlier posts) I'm talking last 70's to mid 80's here! Nothing from the early 90's on, so we can still "enjoy" the hordes of commies storming the Fulda Gap.
3. Interesting thing: Since the end of the WWII, every Russian General Secretary and President has banned any and all inquires into counting the total losses of the Stalingrad campaign, in the fear that the numbers would be too high for the Russian people to accept...
4. I have to say though that their "Hammer's Slammers" project just looked about as cool as a game can possibly get... *sobs uncontrollably into Mountain Dew*
5. Head Mahone: To be perfectly honest with you, I have no idea if such evidence even exists. We (USA) wouldn't want to publish anything like that, and French REALLY wouldn't want to. Besides my Dad's stories and other accounts from veterans, I don't think you could FIND any evidence on that! However, I'm going on break this Christmas, so I'll ask him if he can think of anything. There has to be SOMETHING, but it would probably require looking through US financial accounts during the time. Anyway, maybe he had pictures or something. I will be sure to ask. ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
6. And I would be tempted to agree with you about the Greek Mercenaries, but I still think Belisarius and his troops might have had them beat, hands down... That man had some NICE troopies!
7. CATguy: You're thinking of the political branch, the Waffen SS were the real fighters. The Russians HATED fighted those guys! Most would say they were the "real" SS, while the other guys YOU speak of were little fairies who looked good for crowds and cameras. Also, no they weren't too old. Most were under 20 when the war ended, and the French hired them right after the war. Hey, everybody needs troops to do their dirty work. If anything, the French thought it was ironic, because they could disavow them and piss away their lives. The soldiers agreed because... well, it was the ONLY like they had. Green formations, huh? Tell that to the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions, among a lot of others. I mean, I hate to tell you, but most modern armies learned from the SS and their policy of indoctrination. That's why nowadays EVERY new recruit is taught about their country, and WHY they should fight. We screwed up with that in Korea, and look what THAT got us into! Thousands of GIs just surrendered! Which Cavalry Regiment was it that was so disgraced they were FORBIDDEN to unfurl their colors on US soil until after Vietnam? Was it 1st or 2nd Cav? They have a saying now: "You only fuck with the Cav once!"
8. Interesting story from a German general visiting a unit of the Eastern Front: The general visited an SS battalion that had seen heavy fighting recently, but that had managed to beat back several waves of Russian attacks. All he saw when he went there was open terrain and burned out Russian vehicles, so the General walked up to the only man he saw, a Captain. (Sturmfuhrer, I think...) "Captain, where are your men?" "Sir, do you see that foxhole over there?" *looks over, sees two men dug in* "Ach, yes, I do." "Those are the only survivors. I am in command of the battalion." *Smartly salutes* "What are my orders sir? Tell me where to attack, my men and I are ready." Not easy to fight against such a fanatical and passionate enemy. There are many unbiased scholars who believe that the SS were among the best soldiers ever released in wartime. They were good enough that most of the surviving SS soldiers were hired as mercenaries by the Dutch and the French for use in Africa and Southeast Asia. In fact, WE hired them after the French left Asia for use in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. My Dad tells stories of some of them. Best damn soldiers he ever fought alongside, he tells me... None of them left Vietnam alive. They didn't mind. War was the only job they knew how, it was a way of life for them... P.S. I hate Nazis, but I have to admit the SS were pretty damned incredible... ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior... 9. Okay, bad joke time. Skip if you really don't want to see a stupid old joke. (NOTE: only in jest, I think the trip is an excellent idea) Journal Entry: December 14th... Most of us have run out of Depends. The ship is beginning to smell. Morale is sinking, and out only hope is an airdropped shipment, but weather is against it. Time is running out. Okay, I'm done now. It's late, I'm tired, and I'm just going to run away now to escape the inevitable flames. ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
10. Fortunately, give the world a few more thousand years (probably less, with the huge travel market) everybody will soon turn into a nice golden brown... Well, hopefully that will solve a few things. Although, knowing humans, we'll probably start judging people by nose size or something even more ridiculous. Firebomb + Every "Racial Pride" group of ANY kind = Justice. My little pipe dream...
11. Of course, the guy who posted this thread is the same guy who made the "real war" thread... Give me a break.
12. Well, infantry is by far the most common combat unit in existence, and that was ESPECIALLY true in World War Deuce. No real surprise when armored support was low or nonexistent. Try entering in "Armored" as the type of forces. I think you might find that more to your liking. ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
13. One of the reasons a tank crew would run from their tank is the certain knowledge they have that they WILL die shortly. Their fears: 1.) Tank explodes 2.) Bigger enemy comes along 3.) Artillery blows up the tank (similar to #1) 4.) They KNOW that artillery means the enemy is coming in large numbers. Nobody IRL wastes artillery, and if they're being shelled, that means SOME big boy is on the way. Safer course of action would probably be to wait for a lull in the artillery and then run. If they waited until the artillery STOPPED, they would probably escape too late to prevent being overrun. These thoughts would be FOREMOST in the crews' mind, I figure. ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
14. BTW: An IBM Thinkpad would be perfect. Love those things.
15. /me reads this news and sobs incoherently into his Mountain Dew...
16. I run on a two-year-old 300 MHz Dell, and it allows me to play with all the details turned up with absolutely no problems. Love my machine. /me huggles his Dell
17. Hammer's Slammers was the project they were working on? Is that at all related to David Drake's series of books? If they canceled a game based on THAT, then it's time to hunt down Gore Technology members and dispense a little "cubicle justice"!!! ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
18. Introducing: Sandbag shells! Simply pick the ground you want to defend, move your troops out for 30 minutes, bombard the front line, move your troops back, and voila! Instant sandbag defenses!
19. I haven't seen the movie in a good year or two, but I'd SWEAR the ones in the town were the real deal... Darn, I HOPE they were, at any rate!
20. "Tigers. Now what?" Four simple steps:

Run back to Omaha
Hijack a used landing craft to get back to England
Get a good pint of bitter
Proclaim your bravery to all and bribe your men so they never speak of the truth again Hey, it's better than charging the Waffen SS, right? Do YOU relish the idea of going toe-to-toe with Tigers?! ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior... 21. Wow there horsie! I was just throwing out an idea! Personally, (as mentioned above) I have no problems with ambushes/hold firing/etc. I just figured it was an IDEA to throw out, because it seems as if some people dislike the current system. /me scratches head at that one /me hands Seanachai a cookie so he calms down.
22. European Air War: Nothing beats going up against a flight of Heinkel 111s during 1940 or a flight of B17s in 1943... The game rocks.
23. On the subject of fish... /me smacks Gustav around with a bit of large trout Trout-slapping: Made available via the magic of IRC.
