1. "whipped" not "wiped" War of 1812? More like a draw, really. The British and Canadians just figured it wasn't worth it. No real gains by anybody, really... P.S. The "Canadians" were actually British Army Regulars. Like ANYBODY in the world was going to win against THEM?! Well, not in 1812, that's for damn sure! (After they cut their teeth on the French, they had a good hard core of troops with which to beat ANYBODY.) But I mean, c'mon, the French win/loss ratio is pretty stinking absymal. (Don't ask me to spell that last word right, I just don't care enough. )
2. Julius Caeser = France (Gaul) gets whipped. 100 Year War = France gets whipped. Embaressing to have an English King own a big swath of your country... French and Indian War (many different names) = France gets whipped. I mean, they lost an entire country right there! (Canada) Napoleonic War = ALMOST successful, but result is... wait for it... France gets whipped. Franco-Prussian War = France gets whipped. The Great War = France gets whipped, saved by UK and USA. Big Brawl Deuce = France gets whipped HARDCORE, works for Nazis. French Indochina = France gets whipped, so do we. (USA) Damn. Algeria = France gets whipped. End result of history? France gets... whipped *I/O runs like hell from all French-speaking forums members, French citizens, and moderators*
3. Just remember, at close range 3 or 4 good submachine guns will chew up men faster than a meat grinder! The MP40? SUPERB weapon...
4. They mention several times that it is frequently a BAD idea to give a specific target to an infantry squad, as the Tac AI reacts more quickly anyway. I suspect your might have had MUCH better luck if you had done nothing. Do you have a saved game or autosave that might allow you to test that? P.S. Ever seen an enemy panzerschreck team (green) set FIRE to the building they're in by missing the target they TRIED to hit? *FOOOOSH* "AH!! RUN!" I couldn't stop laughing...
5. BTS is a great company. After playing the demo, I decided to take a chance and put in my money to buy the full version. And you know what? I couldn't be happier. This game is fun, engaging, (some would say addictive... ) and versatile. CM = Money well spent. BUY THIS GAME.
6. I've seen (had it happen to me and did it to another opponent) Tigers become immobilized and soon abandoned by 105mm fire. It was harsh, but hey... such is war.
7. Personally, I prefer to spread out the guys and equipment over the battlefield, within reason. After all, you HAVE to defend certain key strategic areas, and just scattering all your troops evenly would result in everybody dying, most likely. If I KNOW I want to attack in a particular direction, I will allot a slightly higher percentage of those units to that flank. However, since the members of a Hvy Weapons Platoon tend to have very heavy equipment, they don't really lend themselves well to the attack. I usually use them most effectively on the defense, usually in a few choice locations with good overwatch. Sun-Tzu (Slightly incorrect, but I think I remember it well enough): "If your enemy reinforces his left, he is weak on his right. If he reinforces his center, he is weak on the flanks. If he reinforces everywhere, he is weak everywhere." ^ | | DAMN good quote, I feel... ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
8. Standard military belief is that better-trained and indoctrinated troops are much better than a greater number of "regular" troops. Thus the United States has concentrated from '85-onwards on a small elite core for a military, all superbly equipped, trained, and indoctrinated. For CM? Trust me, veterans can wipe the pants off the regular guys. It matters most in the more-specialized fields. Artillery, spotters, vehicles, etc. Note: Crack sharpshooters can shot the flea off a Tank Commander's shoulder at 800 meters. (Although they seriously can turn the tide in a good QB with mainly infantry or open vehicles.) Veterans = Worth 33% extra in terms of skill.
9. Just to get back on subject a little, it turns out that not only did ex-Waffen SS personnel show up in the French Foreign Legion, some of them also went to work for us. Their personnel either continued in the Legion and went on to Algeria, or they became part of the 60s-70s SF community for the United States. Basically, these were guys who had been Hitler Jugen at age 14, and had been professional soldiers ever since. It was ALL they knew how to do. So the Legion was the natural place for a lot of these veterans to go... One thing to point out, Commissar: Military service is not a picnic. In addition, since the United States Armed Forces are NOT at war with anybody, you won't have that much opportunity to go kill total strangers. You really want to get shot at and enjoy cold wet mud and death? Go and join the Russian Armed Forces... *shrug* You want to join a little fantasy of "being a man" and killing people? Go work in a Hollywood movie or join the Legion and put up with crappy pay, worse officers, poor equipment, and morally "sketchy" conflicts. Join a PROPER military for one of these specific reasons:

Wish to defend the State
Wish to protect innocents And that's about it, man... Don't WISH to go to war. Veterans NEVER do. ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
10. /me just sits back and grins his ass off... No, don't worry man. EVERYBODY has a few issues to fix the first time they try to make a map. I mean, at first I couldn't figure out how to place units for Scenario Default! No worries, it's all good.
11. Plus you'll never want to leave your house ever again, but hey. It's all good. Buy this game, or you will regret it. It's not often that a game this good comes around, let me tell ya...
12. BillWoodAgain: Like, dude! Pass me some of that stuff, yo! Where exactly did that all come from, anyway?! j/k
13. So if he's low ammo, I guess you can expect the squad to defend themselves in a marginal way. Just don't expect him to attack anything!
14. Well, it would probably be best if you could actually post the .cmb file you're working on. Do you have a web server account anywhere? Maybe try GeoCities or Xoom if you don't, and then we could actually look directly at the problem. (Hell, I'm on Christmas break, I got time! ) Anyway, if that sounds good, just tell us and leave us a link!
15. You know what's the most interesting thing about the CMBO manual? It's actually worth reading, unlike a LOT of other game manuals out there. I have to say, it's nice to read something that a REAL person wrote and not just another poor corporate technical writer who hates computer games, his office, and the rating he just got. End result? CMBO manual = fun and easy to read. As well as surprisingly informative!
16. That is easily the coolest holiday invention I've ever seen. "Jingle bells, jingle bel..." *BANG* "Ah, thank God you got him! Hans, where are these carolers COMING FROM?!"
17. /me huggles chupacabra Thank you, another voice of reason!
18. *waves hands* Evil demons of computer flame wars, BEGONE! Um.... help? *cowers* Please, not another PC versus Mac thread... *shivers*
19. Airborne troopies LOVED to get armor support... It's a pity so many people hate "gamey" tactics. If it works, it works. And if it's TOTALLY unrealistic, then that should be brought to the attention of the makers. Just remember that in most modern wars, TO&E were only good on paper. No unit ever had only exactly what was written in the tables, and they frequently had less. Just my $0.02 on that one... *shrug* ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior... Edit: Oopsies... [This message has been edited by I/O Error (edited 12-20-2000).]
20. No nation-state has ever gotten ahead by following the orders of others. It is simply illogical for a nation to spend time, effort, men, and equipment in a conflict that is not of their own making and does not benefit them. Especially when people whine about the job you do. Gratitude = good. Pissing off guys who don't want the job = We go home and laugh as you kill yourselves. All clear now? But honestly. How can you expect us to use our own resources in conflicts where we get NOTHING at the end of the process and where we get little or no support? What percentage of ground troops we send into "trouble areas" predominatly American? Remember: It is foolish to think that a Democracy/Republic (call it what you will) can or will be able to keep a straight course with regards to Foreign Policy. Especially in this day and age of all-pervasive media coverage. Case in point: Somalia, 1991. Perfect humitarian cause. Best troops in the world, freshly pumped up from a successful war. Mission? Feed starving people, stop men with guns. Real crowd pleaser. What happened? 20-30 U.S. Rangers get shot up (one corpse was actually dragged behind a pickup truck in front of CNN's cameras) and the United States government was FORCED by it's citizenry to "Bring our boys home!" Never mind the fact that hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians starved as a direct result. So, stop whining that America should fix the world. HELP fix the world, sure. Fix it singlehandedly? I will ignore all such ideas. Until somebody is crowned God King Emperor of the World, we are NOT going to be able to keep everybody all lovey-dovey to each other. You know who are the only people who have ever managed to keep local peoples from revolting? The Romans, the Byzantines, the Turks, The Macedonians, the Nazis, the Soviets, et cetera. In other words: Only dictatorships have the sheer force of will to keep the peace. And most people don't REALLY want to subjegated to another version of the Pax Romana Do NOT expect the free nations of the world to fix the rest of the world. To think such displays a fundamentally flawed view of humanity. (IMHO, maybe I'm just pessimistic. ) It's a damn shame, but it just won't happen. Keeping the peace entails killing off enemies and brutally punishing "subversives". Only once THAT is done will our attempts to get everybody to play nice actually work. (I'm just glad somebody had the forethought to start training a new and unbiased police force for Kosovo. Pity it's taking so long... ) Anyway, just my two cents, disagree if you must just don't ignore what I said. ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior... Edit: Spelling errors and such... [This message has been edited by I/O Error (edited 12-20-2000).]
21. My only concern is that the previous two posters both have better video cards. However, like I said, this game is well worth any effort to get to play it. P.S. Experience is even more vital for sharpshooters (seems to me) than it is for any other type of unit.
22. Although 64 Mb MIGHT be sufficient, (not at all bad for an old box, good one) I would still give you slightly better odds of having the game be too slow to be playable. However, it is still worth the effort. I was afraid that thing would have 32 or less, so you JUST MIGHT be able to play as long as you reduce the amount of smoke/fog graphics and such. Go for it! ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior...
23. In defense of the fatherland, (America ) a good historian could EASILY make the argument that the only way the Russians managed to survive in the first place (and the British) is because of the THOUSANDS of tons we gave them. We shipped everything from food to tanks to fuel all over the world to people we liked a little more than the Nazis. For years we were unwilling to throw in our men, but the idea of Lend-Lease appealed to us tremendously. Let's hear for capitalism! HURRAH! (Sounds good to me, man...) Russia simply was not prepared for the war that hit the Rodina, and so would have been unable to successfully survive without the external support she received. They needed time and beginning capital and equipment to make the huge factories to pump out tanks. We supplied that. P.S. This is how we Americans like to fight our wars. Notice that in almost all the wars we have entered into, we spend billions on material that we throw into battle, but we almost never throw in lives if we can avoid it. The Russians take the opposite approach. In their case, it was (and is) easier and more efficient to replace men than it was to replace weapons. Just depends on how you want to go about slaughtering your enemies, I suppose... ------------------ Honor, Duty, Courage. Valhalla awaits you, honorable warrior... 24. Yeah, I imagine having the bloody remains of your commander's head landing in your lap would tend to shock the crew you're in... Also, sharpshooters are useful as scouts. Quick, difficult to spot, armed with a rifle and a superb Mk. I eyeball, the sharpshooters are quite the useful units to have along for scout work. About your comp question. I do not know for sure, (having never tried with those exact specifications) but I would be prepared to wager that you will not be able to get it to work. The 200 MHz processor you can deal with, but the Voodoo I card will be a killer. Also, how much memory does the box come with? That could make or break your game-playing attempt all by itself.
25. I recommend you use the Opponent Finder Forum as opposed to this one.
