The way CM models gun hits is a little more obtuse then it probably should be i.e. gun hits should not always totally disable the gun. Perhaps leave the gun active but with greatly reduced accuracy. This could simulate the gunner’s primary sight being disabled or the guns boresight being knocked out of whack. (Boresight is not an actual sight but it is basically how tankers refer to the alignment of their sighting system and the actual place where the gun itself is looking) On modern tanks it is a fairly complicated process to boresight a tank and not all that interesting so I won't go in to that. Several battlefield conditions can affect a tanks boresight that have nothing to do with damage (barometric pressure, temperature, ammo temperature, how many rounds have been fired and how quickly, cant, etc). Damage to a tank could easily misalign the tanks sights, but still leave the gun operational (Think about whacking your favorite hunting rifle on a tree a few times and then shooting it). Unlike a hunting rifle tank rounds usually kick up a nice dust cloud or make something blow up so the point of aim/point of impact difference is a little easier to see and correct for. Perhaps CM will model this in the future. I‘ve had to walk rounds on to a target when my ballistic computer crapped out. After you do it once it is fairly easy to get rounds on target quickly once you figure out the “Kentucky Windage” to apply. You can still hit targets but the system of engagement becomes more like direct fire artillery. Hope this helps. BlackFive [ 12-02-2001: Message edited by: Black Five ]</p> -

There is a reason why tankers refer to infantry as CRUNCHIES. Gunner..Coax..Crunchies....Fire. The Master Gunner didn't take any points off my engagement that day, but he certainly gave me a stern look. -
Thanks for all of the tips. Yeah, I had the same toruble with the paperclip. Damn thing just wouldn't fit in there. I tried a clothes pin too but that little hole is just too small. Turns out a pair of pliers and a blow torch did the trick. Thank goodness my CM CDROM is so hardcore...it remembered to wear its falk and Kevlar (Hey it may be a WWII sim but my CD is no fool...it uses the latest and greatest in body armor).

BTS- After I let CM sit in my CD tray for the past 12 months my computer has refused to give it up. It claims that any use of it's clock cycles other then CM is unaccepable. However, once CMII comes out it may allow me to swap the disks out. Help.

CM tells me the wrong IP address???

I may have found some useful info. I unhooked my wifes computer from the LAN then dialed into the Internet via modem. When I launched CM it showed her usual LAN IP and the Dynamic IP set up by the dial up account. I was able to input her Dynamic IP into my computer, which was still hooked in via DSL and launch a TCP/IP game. When I launch CM from my computer it only shows the LAN IP and NOT the Dynamic IP. Is there something in the configuation of my Router that is preventing CM from seeing my dynamic IP? I copied this right from the router help file. >>>>> Trigger: the outbound port number issued by the application. Incoming ports: when the trigger packet is detected, the inbound packets to the specified port numbers are allowed to pass through the firewall. >>>>> I believe that 7023 goes in the triggers but what goes in the incoming ports? I have the DI-704. I think I got it working but I need someone to try and connect to me to find out. This is all fairly new to me but I am beginning to understand it. -

CM will only tell me my LAN address not my dynamic address when I try to host a game. I can connect to others when they host but they cannot connect to me if I host. I am behind a DLink router on an Earthlink DSL line. Any ideas?

Yeah in wooded areas and certainly if panicing under fire getting turned around would be very easy to do. Interesting idea. -

The Value of Infantry!!!!

Tanks are fine and good but without infantry they are of limited value. It is very extremely difficult to hold or control terrain with just tanks. In addition, without an infantry screen, taking tanks into undulating or urban terrain is suicide. I use tanks to support the maneuver of the infantry. As the infantry works toward the objective they also scout for my tanks by checking buildings and wooded areas for weapons that might destroy the tanks. In turn the tanks destroy weapon systems that the infantry cannot handle. The key tactic for incorporating tanks and infantry is to remember tanks are to support infantry not the other way around. Therefore, in a way it is not the value of infantry in and of itself, but that infantry makes everything else more valuable. My main focus with CM is fighting in nasty terrain and especially MOUT. Tanking in tank country (plains, open areas, etc) is easy. Tanking in choppy terrain is an art unto itself. My 2 cents worth -

My post was supposed to be a joke I greatly appreciate the tireless efforts of the mod makers. However, I still want the smell mod :eek: -
Your tanks are way too clean Having spent the last two years of my life on a tank, which is probably a lot easier to clean then WWII tank, I can safely say the mods need to be dirtier. Whenever a tank goes off road and the ground is even slightly damp they dig up just about everything and spew it all over themselves. Thus far no one has made a trunk, like elephants have, to put on tanks so they get really dirty and smelly during a long Op. Also, the TC should be dirty and smelly too. I've heard rumors that Tiger is working a smell mod, but I won't hold my breath. In all seriousness thanks to all armor mod makers. I really enjoy seeing what you create and share, asking nothing in return. Jeremy S. Filko
