  1. Since this has turned into the "looking for a PBEM in Pennsylvania" thread, I'm right outside of Harrisburg. How scary is that?!?
  2. I like option 8 above, as well as Turret's idea for pre-set historically accurate OOBs. I think that would be a nice plus for those of us who enjoy the game more the closer it get's to historical accuracy.
  3. ya, and if I'm gonna fight in France, I want to see cheese and wine dammit! You think we're in this for a good reason? We're in it for the culture! Where are the Can-Can Dancers? Somebody model Can-Can Dancers! [This message has been edited by Croda (edited 09-29-2000).]
  4. If I'm not mistaken, I think he or someone else made a reference to it again in the thread about how old everyone is. I distinctly remember a 14 year old with a warez copy comment. I wish I could go back to being that naive again.
  5. Agreed. Lucky for us that kid will be driving in 2 years. YAY!
  6. since it appears that I started it, let me just agree that the cakewalk discussion is very off topic and should definately be dropped. Apparently my very tongue in cheek comments started a frenzy. I'm also noticing that those of us who don't know the war inside and out appear to be very much Stephen Ambrose and the History Channel educated. Kind of amusing, I must say.
  7. Concerning the 'Rarity' issue, I like the idea of having quantities of rare items restricted as opposed to having them being priced so highly that it is prohibitive to buy very many. That adds realism. Availability can be tied to date and number of points the game is set to. Obviously the item would have to be available as of the date, but as the war went on and more were produced the rarity would go down, but the price would still be constant based upon usefulness. As for tweaking the prices, some should be. I personnaly only buy jeeps (MG or not), Scout cars, and the like if I have a few points left over after purchasing other units. They become filler to eeek out those last few points. In the game, they often if not always end up sitting at the rear doing absolutely nothing. I don't like to commit them forward due to their frailty. I would always take a .50 cal team over a Jeep MG. Not sure if that helps your thinking or not.
  8. I've had similar problems. I try to sneak them around on a flank to get some shots from unexpected angles...they miss and then get buried for their troubles. Anyone who has success with them want to throw out some suggestions?
  9. Hey, just to clear my name... It was improper to mention Utah with Omaha, you are all correct. And I did not intend to defame or otherwise knock the combat abilities or participation of non-American Allies. Just took a light-hearted look at a serious subject. Every beach was contested, every man saw combat, and every man deserves credit. I'm sure that the resolve shown by the British troops throughout the Blitz, and Dunkirk, and elsewhere would also have won through on Omaha beach had that been there task. And as for Mister Bates suggestion about building a McDonalds (even on the Normandy beaches) I point out that there is a KFC right across the street from Gettysburg National Military Park (I've eaten there often) and Americans would be hard pressed to find a more sacred battlefield in North America than Gettysburg. So hell, a McDonalds for every Normandy Pillbox, I say.
  10. Well Master B can say anything he wants. That's why we Americans fought on Omaha and Utah...to make the world safe for Democracy and the American way of life...including free speech.
  11. Bates, don't take it so seriously. All 5 beaches, and the airborne drops, and the rangers on Point-du-hoc, and the feignts in Denmark and Pas de Calais, and Patton's fake Army in England, and everything else were all very important. My point was that comparing the fighting on Gold, Juno, and Sword, to that on Omaha and Utah is comparing Apples to Oranges.
  12. I got the same feeling from Ambrose (fantastic book). As a matter of fact, one the biggest points he tried to make was that the American (the book was decidedly American based) Junior Officers were what truly made the Normandy invasion a success. They arrived, with little training or experience, on a beach (most often 100's of meters away from where the were supposed to land) where the defenses that were supposed to have been bombed into submission were stronger than expected and were cutting G.I.s to pieces. These Junior Officers had the coolheadedness to create mixed units and assault the nearest position looking for an exit. Ambrose gives all credit to those officers, probably rightly so. In my reading and experience, I don't recall the U.S. troops being termed as 'sucking.' Any time you have a wartime army as opposed to a standing army the 18 year old draftees are going to have a lot to learn, and will not be experts immediately upon being placed in the field. My 2 magazines worth.
  13. Pretend that 3 of the 5 beaches didn't exist? For all the opposition that was there, they might as well have not existed. Gold, Juno, and Sword were like assaulting Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Fort Lauderdale. (oh boy I can feel the flames on my back as I'm typing). Disclaimer: Please excuse all hyperbole as the maniacal ramblings of a man trapped at work without CM.
  14. Do you really want to break away? I'm not looking for an escape. CM is keeping me from playing EverQuest. and anything that does that is golden in my book.
  15. 1 month shy of 26. wife, year old daughter, house, job, fantasy football team, the works. Picked this up to help me quit my EverQuest addiction...Now what's going to help me quite CM?
  16. I can say this much...welcome to reality. All reports of hedgerow fighting were that it was absolutely horrible. Men continuously ran into the exact same problem you're having. You've to to love a game that realistic. Unfortunately, I've never assaulted a bocage and thus don't have any suggestions other than to try sending your men through it at an unlikely spot, rather than to go through the breaks. You'll have no idea what's on the other side, but chances are it's not an ambush.
  17. I'm sure I've done at least 5 hours. I'm thinking I've done a solid 6 if not more, but I'm sure that will be beaten easily.
  18. I don't suppose you can pull a John Wayne headshot for me, could ya? Something from the Longest Day (though B&W) or maybe Sands of Iwo Jima? Would love to have the Duke commanding a company or a battalion!
  19. Hans Von Gruden for singlehandedly destroying a company of U.S. infantry with nothing but a gerbil.
  20. Hairy Oberst Yes! Feel free to go on. Are those English translations I assume? And forgive me for asking this if it is the most moronic question of the week, but was U.S./Allied Tank strategy and theory so poor that there are no books worth reading on the topic? Call me closed-minded, but I am much more interested in reading American stories right now, I think I can relate to them better. Though the German stufff may still find it's way to my bedside.
  21. Phoenix buddy, I feel your pain. I quit EverQuest (aka EverCrack, NeverRest) a couple of months ago, and wanted something fun that wouldn't take up as much time (called every night 'til 2AM). I found the demo and thought it was great. Bought the game, can't get enough. I even got assimilated also (a momentous day, to say the least). Now I am at the point you mentioned about reading up on tank warfare. So I only have one thing to say about it: Can you recommend any good books? If this is hell, you can keep heaven.
  22. I think I've seen this recently. Was the T8 out of ammo? In the cavalry operation, I had jeeps maintain a target line on infantry, but they were out of ammo. Just a thought to check.
  23. For those of you (both of you) who are following this breathtaking exchange and wondering where things stand...well, Meeks has received and returned the pbem. Turn 1 about to take place this evening. If that doesn't get your blood flowing, there's a Punky Brewster marathon on TV tonight also!
  24. To the Cesspool, then! It's a shame to see a thread with my name in the title get locked up, but if you think it's best, See'n'Say, then I guess we'll all go.
