1.
quote:
Originally posted by General Panic: Thanks guys... Unfortunately, I can't try this yet because I don't have my cable modem working until Friday

Make sure you run some kind of software like Black Ice regardless of what you do. You're pc is wide open without it. Every game that I have tried online has run fine even when you leave minimal protection enabled.
2. I've been using the Linksys, and the DMZ host works just as described by Panther. One thing I do that most people seem to avoid is that I have assigned the internal IPs to my 3 pcs manually. I've heard that the dynamic assigment of DHCP sometimes causes problems. The Linksys "Status" tab is another source for the IP address assigned by your ISP to the router. This is labeled the 'WAN' IP address, and is the one you give to opponents. I'm also using Black Ice Defender firewall software. It works well with all my online games. For CM, you can crank the protection level to the highest setting, then put your opponent's IP into a 'trusted sites' list. Of course, you have to get their IP address even if you're hosting. Good Luck [This message has been edited by GeoffP (edited 12-18-2000).]
3. Computer Games On Line (www.cdmag.com) put CM on their recommended Xmas gift list. Gee, guys, how about posting a little sooner
4. By the way, Tiger, where is that dark-green Jagdpanther? Was this not historically correct? Thanks
5. I'm lobbying hard for two of my cross-country friends to take the plunge. Steve: Maybe you'll build sufficient resources to build a marketing department. Clearly, that's where the really great decisions about PC entertainment are being made these days. Even better, add a finance department that will help set your release dates.
6. To answer my own question, I loaded the beta drivers, and you still get garbage when you do an alt-tab. Anyone else notice that when you alt-tab out of CM, everything shows up correctly for a split second before going to the desktop? That's really Frustrating.
7. Macintosh is useless to me; you can't play "Grand Prix Legends" with it
8. The green Jagdpanther is my favorite, but I never saw it posted anywhere but here in the forum. Agreed - Thx Tiger.
9. Plasma-equipped ship is the BCF. BCJ has 6 photons - King Tiger of Deep space.
10. Count me in - I'm another pre-orderer. It's tough for me to decide what's cooler, a jagdpanther or a Federation BCF....
11. Thanks for the input guys. to make matters worse, Clubfoot, it was farmland, so there were only scattered trees near the victory flags. Would have been nice if there were some buildings.
12. Played an IP game last night as the British, Armor/900pts/Meeting Eng. I had 3 Churchills, two Kangaroos, 2 infantry platoons, 3 piats, 3 mortars. My start zone was flat, at a high elevation, with a valley in the center of the map. German's setup zone was on the other side of a ridge. From my viewpoint, the first OBJ flag was at the bottom of the valley, the second a little farther away and on the reverse slope of the ridge. My side of the valley sloped gradually, so there was no cover on the approach, but he moved cautiously, making it easy to hustle into position unobserved. He had two Tigers and two Marders in his force. I knocked out one Marder, but the Tigers laid waste to all my vehicles and I was routed. I was aggressive with the Churchills, having one support 1/2 my infantry directly on the valley floor, then using two to attempt flank shots on each side once I observed his two Tigers trying to get into hull-down position on the ridge. I did have 2 flank shots on the left-most Tiger, but no joy. The other had turned directly towards the Churchill to start its own flanking maneuver, and they met head-to-head. This Churchill died in reverse. It was a gamble, because there was only the cover of the elevation once the "flankers" exposed themselves. He pursued to the edge of the ridge on each flank and was shooting down at the reversing Churchill. BTW, a piat team on the reverse slope of the ridge used every shot against the left-most Tiger at ranges 35m-55m, and got no results. I needed at least to immobilize it. Should I write this off to no luck, should I have held the Churchills back behind some trees until he moved into the valley, or should I have tried to break far into his rear area and dragged his heavies away from the objectives? Obviously, there is no "answer" here, I was just hoping some of the good players could offer some opinions. Thanks.
13. Is there anybody with a V5 5500 that does NOT have the text/graphics problems when you alt-tab with FSAA running?
14. I sent an email to the webmaster of the voodoosource.net website. He spoke as if the text problem has been well-documented so the 3dfx guy's response is curious.
15. I love this message board. A really high % of folks have a good attitude & want to help out. Of all the online games I play, only Grand Prix Legends has the same quality boards. Must have something to do with the subject matter pre-dating 1970.
16. Check out http://www.voodoosource.net/vsnet/drivers.html These drivers are for the V4/5 and were out on 12/2.
17. I guess if I was less anti-social and had 2 friends that owned CM I would have thought of that.
18. Just curious if anyone has loaded these and observed any impact on CM. Thanks.
19. A well-received feature would be the ability of the computer to "fill in" the remainder of the point total once a player specifies a few units. Seems like a lot of folks want to build a combined arms force around a specific armor unit or formation. Takes away some of the FOW, but as long as the host is required to set up the forces, it would be a good compromise.
20. Capt: Black Ice has a "trusted sites" feature. If you add the IP address of your opponent to the list, you should not need to open ports. Caution: I would probably not leave a slew of trusted sites on my list unless I was 100% sure who I was dealing with. The CM group is full of good folks, but it only takes one..... Good Luck
21. Played my first IP game last night. Had my speakers connected and my wife reminded me "I sure like it better when you use the headphones". Ah, sorry hon.
22. I believe in the real battle, only a force of 4 panthers made it into the area, but got chased out/destroyed by a platoon of reserve M36s. Sounds like you did better. Maybe some additional flags would add balance (?) I know, I'm talking a lot for someone who has not played the scenario - heh heh.
23. The book I read did mention the tanks sinking up to the rear deck, but they never acknowledge that this confirms that the Germans were essentially limited to the roads. The fog was apparently so bad that the US commander actually called in arty on what he estimated were the most likely assembly areas.
