  1. Marco ROCKS! But I hate one thing in him, he made those Shermans looks so good that I have to use them And David, I play also with 1600x1200 (of course and I have to say that after I have started using high-res mods (some low-res are good too and didn't Marco have some of his stuff as low res too?) I have to say that experience of playing CM has been even better.. Last week when my friend got his CM he brought his computer to my place and we played little network game and got chance to compare originals (also at 1600x1200) to my high-res stuff and it was amazing how much nicer stuff looked even from distance.. Not that original is bad, but it just doesn't have that detail best mods out there have. You should try, get Mod Manager and you can easily remove those mods if they slow you down. And I heard that if you only get high-res vehicles&buildings and use low-res terrain stuff it shouldn't slow you down. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  2. There are several PBEM ladders (also TCP/IP games are welcome at least on RD) and one that I would recommend is Rugged Defence.. but unfortunately I can't tell you url to it because I am at my parents and don't have url at here. Altavista might help, or perhaps someone who has url will come soon.. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  3. I have same problem. White text goes blink blink.. And also sometimes some texts are black (like save game box is always, but can fix it just switching to desktop and back) And also when quit scenario and start new one all text colours are screwed and it is practically impossible to make quick battle (without switching to desktop and back to get colours back) But haven't got any errors and everything works happily. And I am going to fix white text blinking with making UI mod for myself with little grey text and greenish background (using textures from those beatifull shermans as starting point... perhaps have to put batch file to change between UK/Canada/Polish ------------------ jK.MkIII
  4. Anyone have list for bmps used in UI part? I downloaded one mod for UI, but even it looked nice in beginning after while I didn't like it, partly because texts were little unclear but also because it had little bit too much colour in it Now I have problem trying to figure what bmp (or if any) is used under ammo amounts and also under unit id. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  5. Anyone else have problem with these files? I downloaded mod (both versions) from CMHQ and couldn't unpack them, my Aladdin Expander says it is corrupt/unsupported type (well zip certainly is supported). I even tried downloading file second time.. and third. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  6. highlife, you had slowdown at 1260x1040 with P3 850 and Geforce 256? I play with 1600x1200 with dual Celeron 466@560 with TNT2 and haven't noticed any slowdowns.. perhaps we just have different levels what we think as slowdown ------------------ jK.MkIII
  7. Well when I looked at those choices they gave I don't even wonder why they didn't list CM there. Which one of these would you call strategy? Ground Control, I wouldn't.. Homeworld, perhaps haven't played it Red Alert 2, hehe Sacrifice, yeah right The Sims, ROTFLMAO I am pretty sure there must have been some better strategy games this year? We of course know there is CM, but at least something else too.. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  8. Why doesn't it work with resolutions over 1280x1024? What does it do if I use 1600x1200 resolution? I use 1600x1200 resolution and would like to see battles in one movie, but don't want to use some lousy 1280x1024 resolution ------------------ jK.MkIII
  9. Hi, I believe many of you have noticed that in some cases CM AI is good, but sometimes it does some very stupid things that make it look very stupid. In some other thread it was mentioned that AI was harder when squads were split and force morale was lower (but was this because AI acted smarter or because players troops were easier to break too?) I have to admit that I haven't played that much against AI, I prefer PBEM games. But in those games I have played I have noticed that AI has couple bad habits 1) leading with tanks Propably worst case was in one operation (it was original one, FJ troops in Normandy) where computer advanced at night with two shermans right into my ambush. Didn't see any infantry even close.. and this certainly wasn't because I had advanced quickly to somewhere where I shouldn't have been.. if those tanks would have gotten even 10m closer my gun could have fired them from its setup position. 2) massing troops together Sure it is good to concentrate your troops and overwhelm enemy defences, but when you get whole battalion into very small forest area you can blame yourself when enemy fires every artillery it got on you. In same operation killed propably 90% of US infantry battalion with 3 81mm spotters, 3 HMGs and 1 pioneer platoon. And only thing that saved those 10% was that time ended and my second platoon didn't get into firing positions quickly enough. Anyone else have points that AI does wrong, at least in some situations... or some new rules AI should check when thinking what to do? ------------------ jK.MkIII
  10. I don't think hide command makes crew to camouflage their vehicle, because think how would you deal with this. Tank drives 50 seconds into turn, then stops and goes into hide mode. Now in 10 seconds before next turn did crew get how much extra camouflage for vehicle? So I don't think it is, and should be so that you could set up extra camouflage for vehicles. But it would be cool if you could buy camouflages for vehicles if you are defending. This goes in to same category ,that I think I have asked in some other thread too, with camouflaged foxholes because my idiot soldiers dig holes that enemy can see very far away. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  11. That sounds like great idea. I want those lines Would be great tool for planning strategy to use. Like real commander looking at map first and then going to 3D view to optimize and check original plan. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  12. So with my 19" monitor with dot pitch .22 (or was it .21?) my screen is really that 1600x1200 @ 85Hz I can't understand why people always say that higher resolutions doesn't matter because monitors can't really show it ------------------ jK.MkIII
  13. Just wondering on 19" monitor how small must dot pitch be to be able to display 1600x1200 physically? ------------------ jK.MkIII
  14. And I also would like to be able to tell my squads to ambush on couple places. It is not so nice to watch movie when you have placed ambush with your troops for example in city crossing where enemy tanks have two roads they can take. Both pretty close to another (so no need to watch 90 degrees to different directions or anything), but far enough one ambush marker doesn't do the trick. Perhaps could expand main ambush marker with smaller priority ones (keep eye on main one, but don't let enemy walk on you from that direction either..) Perhaps better than ambush marker would be to have ambush area.. And if possible wouldn't mind being able to tell my PIATs not to stop ambushing (and hiding) when enemy infantry walks over ambush position.. would rather want them hiding until enemy tanks come by. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  15. I think it makes sense that you can not enter building from direction where there was other building. Because if there isn't door between them (because you couldn't enter from one to another when they both were still standing) how could you enter if you destroy other building.. there is still wall of still standing building without any doors or other holes. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  16. I have been beaten to death when attacking (I must be no.4 on Jarmo's list and it can happen if defender gets attacker off balance and hopefully manages to pin attacking force in place and let artillery do their thing.. But in some maps defending can be almost easy, if you have quessed what map looks like and bought right troops for it, if can place few guns/bunkers in right place it will destroy attackers armoured fist. And if your infantry and MGs can survive all that artillery raining down on your positions on some maps you can make enemy advance pretty much impossible. But what I think might help, and would love it anyway, is ability to buy defence positions for infantry. Perhaps some extra foxholes where they could retreat after pressure gets too heavy in first place, and hopefully some camoed foxholes.. Don't know what kind of holes they used in WWII, but at least when I was in army and had to dig those I certainly couldn't spot them as far as they do in CM, even when dug it myself and knew where it was. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  17. Heh.. Tiger go on, we don't mind even if you mod all those HTs Actually last week those HTs started to bug me and I tought that I would have to try to make mod for them if no-one else would do them.. but now I would have to find good photos so could see what they really looked like. Anyone know any good places? But hopefully someone who has proved can do great job does them before I try my artistic skills on them... ------------------ jK.MkIII
  18. Ahh.. I remember seeing them too. Now I could be totally wrong, but I think they might be places where enemy can go.. At least in Red Devils scenario I noticed them and sure there were enemies in them in next battle (at least that is what I remember, it has been so long when played it) Perhaps they are places where you know there is enemies because they are so close to your troops. ------------------ jK.MkIII
  19. I think that assaulta, probes and other scenario types are good and more interesting than meeting engagements. But that is just me who likes new situations and loves being kicked in the head It is fun to try to find way to survive overwhelming odds when defending.. haven't done that yet in PBEM, but against AI it was fun But playing mirrored games is good way to play unbalanced scenarios in PBEM without having to feel bad loosing all the time ------------------ jK.MkIII
  20. I prefer scenarios where I don't have to run to meet some given time frame. I like to send units scouting, and hopefully have enough time to fire my artillery. So for 2000p (pretty close to size I like) I would go for 35-40 mins, and if in winter add at least 15 mins to that. But of course it can be kinda fun to have time limit that doesn't allow you to do real scouting and artillery preparations and forces you to go in with all guns firing ------------------ jK.MkIII
  21. Funny, It seems that Fireflies have bad habit of getting killed in this way. I too managed to get my Firefly killed at same time when it knocked out enemy Panther. My Firefly was coming behind building and was ready to shoot at Panther from side (distance about 100m), but I don't remember what unit Panther targetted and I think it started rotating its turret in to wrong way and when my Firefly came behind building and targetted Panther, enemy was already pointing its gun straight at it So there went my surprise and hope to get shoot at Panther without it having time to turn its turret.. so Panther shoots first and when round is on the way my Firefly gets it round on way before exloding. -- jK.MkIII [This message has been edited by jKMkIII (edited 10-24-2000).]
  22. Well those houses must be really small, or those soldiers in CM have as big egoes I do Certainly I could organize group bigger than couple teams, 2 man AT team and sniper or so to fit into house, or even into small hut. For example if it is raining and don't want my men to get wet or I just want to hide them there for while when enemies are driving around. And certainly I could get at least 3 MGs firing out of my apartment windows (grrr... those soccer players making all that noice on summer sundays would get real surprise :mad : ) Sure my MG teams wouldn't be happy when enemy starts firing with SP guns into apartment, but at least they wouldn't have to try to find LOS from ground level. ------------------ -- jK.MkIII [This message has been edited by jKMkIII (edited 10-20-2000).]
  23. Hello, Could someone tell me why I can't get infantry to get into small area (for example house) in organized manner? At least I seem to have problems trying to get troops to hide into buildings without pushing others out... like when I had 1 squad and PIAT in building and moved squad to one corner, and then moved PIAT to corner next to it. Well result was that my squad told my PIAT guys that this side of house is ours and you have to go to opposite corner, and result was that my PIAT was facing wrong direction and enemy tank didn't get hole in its side. I think we should be able to group units together much closer than we currently can. Probably we should be given some kind of penalty for doing that (like "overstacking penalty" when someone shoots at you and all your men are standing very close to each others). But I know it can be frustrating when you can't get 2 man AT team into building because it is too full or other men are just standing in same side of house. ------------------ -- jK.MkIII
