  1. Just throwing my views on the use of such warfare in CM, based on my own thoughts and the excellent essays written here by some of you... In CM, maneuver warfare is largely impossible to do. CM is the tactical scale. It is assumed that once the combatants clash, the maneuver has already been performed. It is not possible to win a CM battle by not engaging enemies. You will have to capture objectives to win, yes, but those objectives will be held by the enemy. CM is attrition warfare, even if you do use maneuver in your tactics. Now, if say, the battle is taking place on a town map, and the enemy has decided to not hold the town itself, but rather face your forces outside the town, then you can maneuver around the enemy positions, capture the VL's, and hold them against the enemy. A sort of maneuver warfare. In most situations, this is not really possible. The enemy is usually smart enough to hold the positions and while in real life you could speed past him and into his rear if he chose to hold them, in CM you cannot. Just my thoughts. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  2. LOL! CM now cost more on E-Bay then from BTS! Why cant people just buy from BTS and save themselves the trouble? ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

  4. Gremlin, Hey, Im not disagreeing with you. I'd like to see this, but according to BTS' latest views on such things as upgrades, Im not sure theyd sacrifise the time for this idea. On Page 6 of the Gunny Bunny's graphics thread, you can find a list Steve wrote for suggesting upgrades. Ther upgrade suggested much match all 7 (i think) rules Steve stated for BTS to consider doing it. A major rule is the time devotion to it. That the only reason Im doubtful about the whole idea. The effects will be either over simplified, or too hard to do in the time frame BTS is aiming for. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

  6. Im sorry Gremlin, I must have misunderstood you. By D-Day, I thought you meant the actual landing process, not the overall Op. Market Garden, which did involve the glider landings which were planned with moon phases in mind. Either way, its strategy beyond CM's scale. Yes, I understand this, but since the sun moves during the course of the day, setting it in a given position wont change much from what is in CM now. If you want to get complex, you have to go for the full light cycle, or have people complain that time stood still Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  7. Send me the pic. I dont know how to post it, but thats besides the point Seriously though, some people here know how to do this, or can at least tell you. I believe you need to have the pic on a website/uploaded to the web, then you can include the link for the pic with some HTML text. Or somefink. Im clueless Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  8. Select an enemy unit of your choice and type "666gunnybunny666" This will make selected enemy unit imprevious to logic and all orders given to it by the enemy player. In a PBEM/TCP/IP game, when the enemy gives an order to the unit you have affected, the messege "not before Translucent Lighting, not before Translucent Lighting, not before..." will appear across the enemy player's screen, until said player is too disgusted and annoyed to continue the game, giving you the win. This code can be used an unlimited number of times if you are playing against any member of BTS team. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  9. I believe you are mistaking this with Operation Market Garden, in its entirety. D-Day itself was the day of invasion. Any cycles of the moon for this amphibious landing would have to do with tides, not visibility, since the troops started landing in daytime. Gliders, again, were part of Market Garden, not actual D-Day. Yes, in the middle of the day, this would not change much. However, doing an early morning or a early evening battle, even a tiny battle of a mere 15 turns can bring a large change in visibility. If you've ever sat up to see the sun rise/set, you know how quickly the change between light and darkness takes place. So, either make complex calculations (not feasible), or not have light change during morning/evening battles (unrealistic). I think BTS will pick the third option of not doing it. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  10. Gunny Bunny, AFAIK, bump mapping CANNOT be done by the fans. Bump mapping must take place on the actual MODEL of the object in question. IE: To apply the Zimmirit paint to a tank, as someone mentioned, BTS would have to do this on the tank model itself. Too much hassle for them, I think. This is all AFAIK, so if someone knows more, the stage is yours Oh, and Gunny Bunny, I suggest you give up on trying to make BTS addopt new technology. It ain't happening, pal. Just drop it. However, if you want to participate in graphic discussions without constantly saying "BTS should do/what does BTS need to do to do this", Im sure nobody would mind much. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  11. Oh, and as a bit of Off-Topic related to Ground Control itself... I played the demo, and was strangely dissapointed. I think I have been spoiled by the realism of CM - even gorgeous graphics dont do it for me anymore! Soon, Ill be studying armor-penetration charts and yelling at newbies on the board for not getting a minute detail correct on an extremely rare WW2 vehicle. Arrrgh! Im becomming Groggy! Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  12. Michael, DD did some excellent US Inf uniform mods a short while back. Look for them at the CMHQ. That's about it, though, AFAIK. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  13. Although such a feature would be nice, I doubt it is possible to incorporate. The effects would be too hard to code, IMO. After all, the sun rises and sets, and its effects on vision are thus varied as time passes. We would have to incorporate things such as the time of the battle and all such stuff. Too much hassle, IMO. D-Day was 1) Strategic planning, not Tactical like CM 2) The Moon Phase was in reference to how strong the tide on the beach was, not visibility issues. The effects of games like GC are indeed beautiful, but I dont expect to see this until CMII, with the engine re-write. Those effects are possible with technology BTS doesnt not plan on incorporating, as they stated in the multitude of graphic-related threads. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  14. Jasper, Another good adrticle, thanks. I think you will be hard pressed to find any article on the war written by Russians, especially if you hope to find an article written at around the time of the war's end. This is for several obvious reasons, like the fact that the war was so huge that small feats, especially those performed by women, were largely forgotten in the overall scheme of things. Another reason might be because the former USSR stored all its war-related (and none war-related) info in padlocked government files, unavailable to the public. Good luck to you anyway, Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

  17. Uh-huh. Just admit you didnt know what it meant, Bruno! The answer for both is Vodka, not Sex! This is Russia, not China - otherwise our population would be as big as theirs. Give Chinese vodka and voila! Population problem solved. In all seriousness though, there were never 40 year old Babushkas. Late 50's yes, 40's no. Russian customs on marriage and the bearing of children were very strict, as they still are. With due exceptions of course This has been another Russo-Culture lesson hosted by The Commissar. Till next time, when during our "Do it yourself" section, we illustrate how to make home-brewn Vodka. 18. Ugh, why must you Americans use the word "babushka's" without knowing what it is? It means Grandmother! Now, Bruno, unless you have a weird fetish we dont know (and frankly dont want to) know about, you would certaintly NOT want to see cherub-faced grandmothers in CM2 Terence, Sorry about taking offense to your first post. Still, i must disagree. It must be a matter of growing up in a country and identifying with its people. Im often able to pick out fellow countrymen in a busy NYC street by their looks, usually. Either way, no point to arguing about it. As I said, matter of upbringing. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" [This message has been edited by The Commissar (edited 01-30-2001).]
  19. Here's a question thats not entirely related, but caught my fancy... Von shrad mentioned fires growing with time. Well, what about fires spreading in densly wooden areas or close-together buildings? It happens in real life, and I dont think it would be too hard to model for CM2. It would certaintly play a crucial role in CM2's town battles, like Stalingrad, the infamous "Infernal Cauldron" reference being a key factor here. Fires spread through the city and added to the chaos of it all. Would be quite a challenge predicting which buildings the fire will consume! Opens doors to strategic fire-setting to prevent and enemy from using, say, a certaint city block. Oh yeah, and did I mention buildings finally collapsing into rubble after burning for a while? Now I did. I'll shut up and await replies Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  20. Shee-it, Im still laughing at that one m8, good one! :-P In all reality, ugly people can be found in all countries - just look at the McDonald-eating fatties in the USA or the crooked-teeth "ladies" in the U.K. Don't even get me started on those French ! See? Its easy to stereotype to no end! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  21. And the, uh, point of that was...? Ahem, *cough-cough-bull$@*!-cough-cough* Whew, damn cold weather, I knew I should have worn a sweater yesterday! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" [This message has been edited by The Commissar (edited 01-29-2001).]
  22. PzLeader, Hmm, good point with the Russians fighting for Nazis. Still, could be taken care of ig you think about it, just have a few Russian faces for Germans. I realize that female numbers were small...but if you really *wanted* to show their importance in history as some suggested, you *could* do this if you wanted. Not saying this is completely correct, but you could, yes. Matt, Really? I didnt realise it. Guess I ought to boot up the game and start counting them faces! Well, variety couldnt hurt much... could it? Terence, Whats the defenition of "loopy" according to yourself? If its "stupid" or "false" then you are wrong. If you look at 2 people from different countries, they will display certaint characteristics that are common throughout their countries. Especially if the people of said countries are not diverse in culture and heritage (unlike the U.S. for example), like Russia and Germany. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  23. I agree with Maximus. There was a thread around New Year's how a 10 x 10 texture size would be more realistic modeling for city battles, which will be an important part in CM2. You just cant insert a lot of minor details into town battles if the texture sizes remain as they are. I would think this would be a bit of a coding challenge. Aww crap. Hope it works out, though. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
  24. A real simple solution to this "dilema" would be to include more "faces" for the soldiers in CM2. Instead of the 5-6 faces we had in CM1, make a dozen or so. Have one out of the dozen+ be female. Then again, if CM2 follows the same lines as CM1, faces will be the same for Russians and Germans. Personally, I dont think this should be the case, because IMHO (and in fact, anyone who comes in contact with Russians and Germans enough to distinguish the two) Russians and Germans look "different". Its a bit hard to explain. German faces have more straight lines, more rigid structures. Russian faces look *sort of* childlike almost, with more rounded faces, kind of a *merry* look. If that made any sence to you at all! I can see why this was not done for CM1, as Americans have a wide variety of people and cultures mixed together - they dont have a rigid *look* to them. 'fcourse, this might be too hard to draw up, although I doubt it. Just a suggestion. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
