  1. The horrible truth is starting to reveal. It seems that those aliens have abducted a lot more people, because all of my opponents are using something called Mac: Jarmo, Berli, Shandorf, CDIC, Fionn?. And nobody is using the PBEM helper for obvious reasons.
  2. PBEM helper 1.0.157 is availabe. Some clever people noticed that version 1.0.156 did not refresh the display automatically when the game program quit, if you had numbered game files. I now fixed this, it works now with all programs, not just CMBO, and the PBEM helper display is not blank when CMBO is running a numbered game file.
  3. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Deadly Dave: What if your commander said " Imperial soldier i wish that you would get in this plane filled with TNT and fly in to the Yanky warship" or" Abduhl I want you to drive this van filled with explosive into the jewish quarter and blow yourself and everyone around you to pieces."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Exactly. Perhaps CMBO should simulate morale differently, so if you have fanatic units, only then they will do suicide missions. But personally I am happy with the current CMBO, it allows me to play the game. And what I said earlier, it does not mean that I would use gamey tactics, but I want to be free to use them, and I also give my opponent the choice. What if attacking in the edge was prohibited? Then I would always know that he is attacking in the middle. Boring.
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by jshandorf: Ordering a jeep to drive willy nilly into the enemies lines is utterly ridiculous. If such an order was givin you can be sure that the "real life" driver of that jeep would just drive out of sight and park.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> You are right, in real life that would not happen (except if the commander has very much authority and gives explicit commands...). Still it is possible in CMBO. So CMBO should improve... it should simulate morale better. But nobody should blame players if they play like this, everything that CMBO allows is OK. And the player is that ultimate authority...
  5. Well I just can't go to sleep yet, so I must respond to this: I have never watched their faces. I just send them running throught the battlefield etc. The expression in their face is not so important to me, I'm more interested in if the enemy sees them, or if they see some enemy, or if they are weary, or if they can run a bit more. I think that this game is about combat strategy, not beautiful faces.
  6. By the way, maybe one of the problems with this tournament is (hope was) that we all know already who gets all that wine. Fionn of course. So we just have to motivate ourselves again now. My personal motivation is to learn how to play CMBO, and meet (virtually) some interesting people. Some even using Mac.
  7. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by MrPeng: It is patently obvious to me what the problem was with this tournament. It was for "Stars": a breed notorious for temper tantrums, capricious and willful behavior and "eccentricities" that make the raging psychotic muttering to himslef as he sits on a sidewalk grate seem positively sane. Yup, bunch a prima donnas - Mariah Careys all yap yap yappin to have the seeds removed from the watermelon slices or there will be hell to pay. pack o friggin sissies. makes me sick. buck up play the game win the wine and stop whining.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I think that I have now a vague idea what the Peng thread is about. Thanks Peng... we all needed that...
  8. Status update: The battle with Berli is going on nicely. I am aware that this may be my only chance to get a win, considering Berli's previous score. Still it is way too early to say what will happen. He may get his first win here. Jshandorf's troops I have not seen yet. I understand now why Jarmo wanted to play our map! He has nice positions, and I can imagine what units he bought. I have not heard about Fionn for a week or two. Maybe Treeburst could post the scores again, so that we get this tournament to the normal state. I am very happy that the nightmare is over, and I am looking forward to playing with the rest of you. I am sure that I will learn a lot. I have one or two slots open, so just e-mail me, I accept anything.
  9. MrSpkr, thanks for the feedback. The helper does not give any error message? It opens a message box in most cases if something goes wrong. I have not seen this behaviour myself. Perhaps you have so many files in the CMBO\PBEM folder that there is some timing problem.
  10. I still think that all those rules are completely unnecessary. If something is possible in the game, then it should be allowed. Blame the game, not the players... I have been quilty to 1) 2) 3) 4) in some extent in some of the games that I have played, not in this tournament, though. So it is better for me to withdraw from this tournament. I will play the two games to the end, if my opponents want to continue (Berlichtingen, Shandorf). There is no reason to start the game with Jarmo or Fionn, because no moves have been made (I could still play with Jarmo a ready made scenario or computer generated leisure game if you want, I think that these maps are a bit too much balanced and artificial, and not so interesting).
  11. Yes, you need only the new executable if you already have PBEM helper installed. Unfortunately pbemexe.zip did not have the latest readme, I added it now.
  12. PBEM helper 1.0.156 is available. From the readme: "If the file name is numbered and there is a matching subfolder under CMBO/PBEM, then all previous turn files are moved automatically into that folder. For example, if there are files Berli_Fuerte_001.txt and Berli_Fuerte_002.txt and there is a subfolder Berli_Fuerte (or Berli_Fuerte_), then the file Berli_Fuerte_001.txt is moved into this subfolder. Besides _ character also space and - are ignored from the end of the file name when searching for the subfolder. The latest file is never moved. But if you click Delete (in Edit F2), then also this file is moved into subfolder (if it exists)."
  13. The new rule of "gamey tactics will not be tolerated" is a very bad thing IMO. This is a game after all. If something is possible in the game, then it should be allowed to happen. Blame the game, not the players. Don't understand me wrong, I probably wouldn't have used any gamey tactics, but the fact that there is such a rule restricts thinking a lot. When you make your moves, you have to consider if it is gamey or not. And if you think that it could happen in real life, your opponent might not agree. Then Treeburst starts viewing the game recordings, etc. This all just makes this tournament more difficult to manage, and play. The original rule of "there are no rules" was much better. So I am ready to withdraw from this tournament, I only have two games going, both in the beginning, none finished, so it really is no big deal, and it makes the tournament faster to the rest of you. And I'm afraid that I don't know about history enough to play 100% correctly all the time...
  14. I don't understand what happened, is this tournament really dead?? Personally I don't care about pre-game negotiations, I find computer generated battles as pleasant to play as these human generated maps with human purchased units. I think that it would have been much simpler if every game would have been computer generated. And there could have been assault/defence battles as well... maybe we could have used the same system as in bridge tournaments, where the same hands are played by different players over and over again, and the results are compared in the end. If my vote has any meaning anymore, I vote for #1 gamey tournament with computer generated battles, and all played games counting as well as those in progress. We could have less players, 20 is a bit too much, or the tournament should be allowed to last for 8 months as planned. Basically we don't need Treeburst if he does not want to continue. This does not mean that I don't appreciate what he has done so far, quite the contrary.
  15. Hello, I have spent my summer holidays, so I have now time for a few more matches. I am playing just one at the moment, and two more are starting. Just send me a message, I'm open to anything... the use of PBEM helper is recommended!
  16. I just have to tell a story about my right little toe. It is broken. There was the story. I can't think of anything else but my right little toe nowadays.
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Stalin's Organ: Some of my opponents get 2 complete sets of e-mail messages (ie a duplicate message, complete with hte PBEM footer text & a 2nd attachment) ....it stopped for one, then started for another...I've no idea why - any thoughts?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> My opponent got that from me once as well. But he got it only once or twice. Are you using MAPI or SMTP?
  18. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Stalin's Organ: Thanks - yes I'm using 3-digit numbers, and I don't have the opening movie enabled - it starts up with "Battlefront presents"....<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I don't know where you got that "Battlefront presents", I don't have it. It should go directly to the Play Game / Create Scenario / Join Multiplayer / Exit main manu.
  19. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Phillies Phan: I'm using Fuerte's PBEM helper for 8 PBEM's right now and its a godsend. May none of your children look like Mad Matt. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Hey, this is not Peng thread, but thanks! Btw, there is again a new version available, 1.0.144.
  20. Do not use .PBM! It is reserved for the PBEM helper...
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by MarkEzra: I use compuserve and have never been able to configure the PBEM helper to connect to compuserve.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> PBEM helper has support for MAPI (Outlook Express, Outlook, Netscape, Eudora etc.) and SMTP. If Compuserve is a web-based e-mail system, then PBEM helper probably can't send e-mails thru it.
  22. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Viceroy: How do I get it to automatically save PBEM files in the right folder for each opponent?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> That is something that OneClick does (I believe). PBEM helper does not currently have support for sub-folders under CMBO\PBEM folder. You should save all files into CMBO\PBEM folder...
  23. I have received two requests for support for sub-folders under CMBO\PBEM folder. I will try to do it one of these days...
