1. Have read and seen recommended, many fine books concerning the West Front and the fighting covered by CMBO. To set the mood for CMBB what might I be reading concerning the fighting in the East? Thanks, --Randl
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by Mannheim Tanker: Why is it "gamey" if it can be done in real life? "Gamey" use would be teleporting them into position.

I agree on using Sharpshooters! Half squads and Sharpshooters are my favorite shortrange two legged recon troops. I do love the Lynx to putter about in mechanical mode though. Although, they say there weren't that many of the small beasts around to use for recon that much. So I can only use one every 35 games or so. I noticed something interesting while using a Sharpshooter as forward recon. I had one stumbling through the woods on a recon mission and he fell into a foxhole inhabited by an enemy Sharpshooter. The two refused to fight. I thought maybe mine was too close, so had him leave the hole that he could better see to target. No dice on holding a target line once the turn started. The Sharpshooters Guild must have rules of engagement that I am not privy to By exposing the fellow however, a friendly MG was able to terminate the enemy's Guild membership.

 4.
quote:
Originally posted by Goofy: Recently Dave T and I started playing a scenario labeled as #5 of The Band of Brothers scenarios. It's called "A Hell of a Lickin!" and I'm not sure of the author's name.....

I enjoyed that scenario also. Franko did "A Hell of a Lickin" and indicated at one time that there was more to come in a Band of Brothers series of scenarios. Franko is your man.
 5. Geesh, I just realized that I mentioned, Franko and Rune in a scenario based post while speaking directly to Wild Bill.........and I didn't even tell Wild Bill how great a scenario man he is also!!!! I meant no disrespect. Sir you may lash me, smash me, kick me in the dirt, I deserve it. --Randl
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Wild Bill Wilder: .............And I've only covered one aspect of balance. I would write more but it might become tedious for you to read............Wild Bill

I am interested in reading it. I can't imagine a glimpse into the scenario furnace of your mind to be tedious When possible, I prefer human to human historical scenarios. I have heard it said before that historical scenarios come from events where one side or the other felt they had the odds that would give them a victory in the first place. This then leads many historical battles to be unbalanced from the get go. I PBEM'd Franko's "Hell of a Licking" scenario. It is inherently unbalanced I think, but yet I found it very balanced in how the victor was determined <I hate to say too much from a Spoiler aspect>. My view of unbalanced historical scenarios is that if you do not lose as bad as the historical counterpart then you are on the victorious side of gaming balance. The flip side of that being, If you are playing the historical victor then not only must you win, but you must win at least in as convincing a manner as your historical counterpart. If you do not do so then you lose.....even though on the battlefield of our computer screen you may have been kicking a little butt. I have never talked with Franko but this is what I think he has accomplished in his "Hell of a Licking" scenario. Almost all of the PBEM scenarios I play are of the equal forces meeting type of scenario. I really like Rune scenarios in that respect also. It is easy to find them because you are almost always told that is is a, "30 turn medium 1500 point meeting engagement designed for online or PBEM play, so go for it". When playing PBEM with folks the idea of having the chance to win is usually of paramount importance. I have always wanted to play a rearguard type of scenario. A scenario where one side must hold for a time or slowly retreat, yet must exit enough units from the board to the rear to be able to accumulate enough points to be declared a victor. The sticky point being that a wholesale immediate retreat off of the board will not garner enough points for any victory. This would mean I think, that one must attack and/or destroy enough of the enemy first, before exiting the battlefield. I would love to know which scenarios are thought of as "unbalanced" historical scenarios. These scenarios would have been tested to the point where it can be said that all things being more or less equal there is the possibility for either side to win in a head to head arena. For that reason then they could be considered balanced with each player having a chance to win. So Wild Bill, would your "tedious" <supposed to be a smiley here but it won't stick> discourse on scenario design include anything more on how to make historically unbalanced battles winnable from either side in the gaming sense of the word? I apologise if a lot of what I tried to say didn't make sense. Regards, Randl p.s. hmmmpf...here's those smileys that wouldn't stick above, they're down here -->
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by 0time: ......I really have a problem with paying over $30.00 for a game........

CM is _NOT_ a game.........it is a way of life ...therefore a bargain at $50. They could sell you a set of tapes and give you a coupon for a seminar at three times the cost, but why bother...the CD has it all. Somebody drag me away quick....I think my upper turret has been penetrated once to often, I am definitely suffering scrambilization in the mental casework.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Mannheim Tanker: Especially when you're killing my Poles, eh, Randl? Thanks for the tip on using view 8 - great idea!

Greetings Master Mannheim, LOL ____ There was a bit of Tit for Tat there as I remember seeing it. We were both exhausted and prostrate on the ground, weakly tossing dirt clods at one another at the end weren't we? My favorite view of which was..... View 3 and no bases on, with a shift A to bring the horizon into it a little bit and a 1x-Zoom to give it that special quality...turn the sound up and then watch the smoke billow...or dirt clod dust as the case may be )
 9. I rely on the bases to show where my units are so I use nothing other than realistic size but with bases on. I also am one to eliminate the trees while plotting orders that are based on the lay of the land.
 10. Hi Daniel, Is it possible for you to make an icon that you like? Save it in perhaps the CMBO folder. Put a shortcut on the desktop and in that shortcut's properties choose your new icon as the icon to be used. Or am I misunderstanding your question?
 11. Be aware also. The game may show one of those "unit sounds" visual markers during the movie.....and at the end of the movie it will disappear. It will not carry over like a visual sighting icon can. Somebody else mentioned this and I have been trying it and like it. At some point during your replay session....use view 8 with bases on at least once all the way through the turn. It helps one get a feel for what is moving on the field. Watching the movie is one of my favorite parts of the game Why have all of these wonderful mods if I am not going to watch them in action In fact at the end of my setup turn I go to the unit or area I am most interested in viewing later and setup the view so that when It returns from my opponent I am right in place to watch.
 12. In my experience so far, I have never located any enemy elements by sound alone. If one can hear but not see an enemy unit......the game will place one of those generic unit sound icons on the map to indicate that something is heard in that area. My feeling is that a sound that could be heard by moving over the battlefield map would also be indicated by a visual marker for the sounds heard. It would be interesting if someone has a different experience.

I'm a glutton for punishment (I played Crown of Thorns and maintained most of my sanity), and would love to play this sucker.

Rune's first message said he sent it to Manx. Keeping an eye on the Combat Missions website might pay dividends. http://www.combat-missions.net/
 15. Good day Master Rune, I have enjoyed every one of your scenarios that I have played. I have all of your paks and now and again I will open them up and fondle them, then put them back in their folder for safe keeping. I would very much like to open up a pak and just play them through. But they are so good that I hate to waste them on me so.....I horde them and only use them for PBEM double blinds. I sensed your distress at seeing fewer public votes than your good work should have collected. Please do not feel bad. Your scenarios are like the family jewels, only to be shared at special moments and with special people. They are not common rocks to be tossed about haphazardly in some back alley. My regards to you sir.
 16. Out of the Rune Paks comes a scenario; "Pole's Revenge" or something close to that. Played it PBEM and quite enjoyed it.
 17. To further muddy the moddy question. What combination of mods might make a great LoRes / HiRes mix for use on sub 400 computers by users wanting to fight all but the largest scenarios?
 18. Hello, Mr. David Aitken has a good looking in town scenario which I have just started a PBEM with. Don't know how it will playout as we are only a couple of turns into it, but I sure like the look of the map. An unusual aspect of the scenario is the lack of Victory Locations. One gains victory points by eliminating or capturing the enemy. I recommend a visit to his website and a look at the "Window Shopping in Force" scenario located therein. http://www.reckoning.demon.co.uk/cm/ Regards, Randl
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Franko: ..........This is game 4 of my "Band of Brothers" collection......

I have looked....but apparently in all the wrong places....where might I find the first 3 scenarios of the "Band of Brothers" collection? I am interested in playing all four. Thanks in advance for any help. --Randl
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Babra: ....Since there are only five discreet speeds with which crews move and react (based on their experience level), and since most of those we encounter are "regular", opposing tanks tend to get their shot away at roughly the same time, provided one of the vehicles involved isn't hampered by a poor facing and/or slow turret. .....

With that in mind, when a tank is Hunting for a shot, two tanks might easily see one another at the same time. If the range is long, there is some projectile flight time involved that can help even out a disparity in firing times and helping the case towards a little mutual destruction. Makes me wonder how many times in the old west that a High Noon gunfight resulted in mutual elimination also.
 21. I like things the way they are. Closed source. I came to CMBO from recent PGII play and the never ending story of new and improved equipment files. I hope CM never ends up where any modder can put together what they consider to be _THE_ equipment list or massage the list to change unit attributes to fit their view what should be. It would be a modsluts heaven and a scenario designers hell
 22. "When are you being gamey?" My answer to that; When the person playing against you, thinks you are. Gaminess is in the eye of the beholder. Why does one play CM? 1) Because it is an interesting way of competing against other people using WWII military stuff as the tools of the trade. It looks good, sounds good and it's fun. 2)Because a person who is interested in WWII history. In some small limited way they want to try to recreate in a vicarious manner some of the things that happened during the period. For the person who plays CM from the first gamers perspective, there would be few if any gamey issues. Seems to me that talking gamey issues for them would be a waste of good gaming time The person who plays CM more for the second historical perspective could have any number of gamey issues. The question for me then becomes; when is a person being gamey when viewed from _only_ a historical oriented players perspective. How can one get good historical flavor out of what CM has to offer as a game. While at the same time, in the eye of the beholder I am not some kind of reprobate? --Randl
 23. I have the "Rubble_by_Tiger_FIXED.zip" at 40k size. Send an email and I can pass it along to you. It may very well be the same as the others are mentioning. --Randl
 24. I follow the tenets of the xxx01, xxx02, xxx03 crowd. EXCEPT..I have of late taken to adding my initial after the numeral; 01r, 03r, etc. I am becoming old and feeble of mind and with a glance I can make out whether that last file in the list was sent by me or my illustrious opponent.
 25. Great piece of work Deanco! It looks right good there on my screen. So good....that I had to drag myself up off the lurkers bench just to tell you so. Welllp...that's enough, back on the bench I go.
