  1. Interesting issue actually, what constitutes a bad commanding general? My attempt at definition: "One who snatches defeat from the jaws of victory" i.e a leader that has: adequate forces (quantity and quality) a defined task good logistics a functioning staff good communications and STILL manages to lose a battle or fail a given task. Anybody comes to mind? -Derfel
  2. Updates; Daily? Nope. Monthly? Nope Quarterly? Yep. New Byte Battles out now. http://www.algonet.se/~jim/
  3. Here's a start: The Byte Battler Go to "Documents" and the look for "Derfel's Quick and Dirty AFV guide". There's a similar thing on the CMAK pages with Italian and British AFVs. -Derfel
  4. *GASP* ..."What's Byte Battles?"... Go Here instantly! ...mumble... imgaine not knowing the term "Byte Battle".... youth of today... grumble... Oh, and I didn't mean to imply that the Campaign tool was impossibly difficult, just complex and detailed. -Derfel
  5. Gadzooks! Very, Very impressive... don't know if I'll ever manage to use it but one hell of an effort has gone into this... In fact it has inspired me to create a campaign tool for Byte Battles... but simpler... *looks at Excel-sheet and shudders* MUCH simpler... Kudos Rob, -Derfel
  6. WARNING! IF YOU'RE GOING TO PLAY BOOTS AND TRACKS TCP/IP PCK. SPOILERS BELOW! Andreas: From memory; Pz IV E or posssibly F (short 75mm in any case) Pz III H I think... might have been others too.. I remember the "H" because it had a "Crack" crew. -Derfel ADDENDUM: Turns out there were Pz III "G" and "E" versions too. [ January 19, 2004, 11:09 AM: Message edited by: Derfel ]
  7. Now that we're on the subject of Stuarts; Where the 37 mm on that thing really that deadly? I played one of the scenarios of Boots and Tracks TCP/IP pack the other day (A taste of Honey or somesuch) and completely massacred various Pz III and IV with my Stuarts. Not being that particular kind of Grog I don't know much about the Stuart/Honey but it does seem a little too lethal... Comments, anyone? Derfel
  8. YES! THAT'S what we... er... I want! More grime, soot and dust. In short weathered units. Go Gautrek! -Derfel
  9. Hmmm... since there seem to be some little interest in this question I'll BUMP it once more. -Derfel
  10. Just a quick final BUMP! With a question: Does anybody know if there actually is a limit on the number of terrain types the game can handle? -Derfel
  11. Bummer, I'm really going to miss the factories... Thanks for the replay anyway Rune. And no, Heavy buildings aren't quite as useful nor as flexible when it comes to simulating aircraft hangars, railstations, train depots, POW barracks, waterfront-warehouses, and a dozen other structures not covered by the standard buildings. Ah, well... -Derfel
  12. Yes, I was wondering that as well... anybody out there who can enlighten us on this point? I don't quite see why they'd have to throw out previous scenarios...? Regards, Derfel
  13. OK, I'm not usually one to gripe, and especially about CM but here goes; I just started exploring the CMAK-editor and discovered that the "Factory" option has been deleted. For my life of me I can't see why. The factories in CMBB were among the more useful constructions and could be made to simulate a lot of different structures. Surely there is a place in Italy and Africa for this type of buildings? Not just as factories but simulating aircraft hangars, train depots etc etc Personally, if I have to choose between the new "building with pavement" and the CMBB-type factory I'd go for the factory, but that might just be me...? Your thoughts on this, fellow scenario designers? Regards, Derfel
  14. If you liked that, you'll love this Click on "Documents". -Derfel
Återkommer i ärendet. Och glöm inte att nämna Berli , han gillar inte heller utlänningar... -Derfel [ October 07, 2003, 09:09 AM: Message edited by: Derfel ]
  16. Before this degenerates... er... changes into a discussion on various Para units performance in WWII... COULD WE PLEASE GET BACK TO THE SUBJECT MATTER!? ...ahem.. sorry... meds acting up... Anyway, I had a similar idea to Dorsosh and have even made a small tentative start in collecting ideas for CMAK scenarios. Byte Battler Afrika Korps So far it's just a bit of theft from others but I would be happy to host a few pages with ideas, if people felt like contributing. Further thoughts? -Derfel

  18. COG; Fingers crossed for everything, wife, job and server, in that order. I too have a rather embarassingly large collection of mods mostly downloaded off your site so if there's anything missing once you get going again, just put out the word. Once you're back in action I for one will put in a few bucks, I'm just ashamed I haven't done so earlier. Sincerely, Derfel
  19. Thankee for those kind words There most certainly will be more battles available for testing, the Proving Grounds is a valuable resource for us designers, it's so damned hard to give yourself feedback... -Derfel
  20. Yes folks, It's true. The Byte Battler has been updated. Not only are there a whole bunch of new Byte Battles AND full size scenarios to while away the evenings or working days as the case might be, but there is also a completely new sub-site with stuff relating to CMAK. Don't take my word for it, see for yourself The Byte Battler -Derfel [ September 28, 2003, 03:20 PM: Message edited by: Derfel ]
  21. One Terrabyte! Calls for a celebration, I'd say... Hey, Winecape; how about sending COG a large case of wine to sustain him for the next TB? Seriously, I must express my appriciation and thanks for keeping this great site running, mods add immensly to the CM experience and to be able to find them all (or nearly all) in one place is an outstanding service. -Derfel
  22. In CMBB: Same mistake as everybody else... using the infantry like CMBO infantry... "Come on lads, first you run 600 meter across this here open field and then you storm the building where you can see all the little barrels poking out..." In CMBO: Ahrg, painful tale... in "All or Nothing" (in my opinion the best CMBO scenario ever, if played as allies) I carefully moved an artillery spotter across a very dangerous field and up over a ridge infected with enemy infantry and mines. Eventually after some 12 or 14 turns I get it in position to call in some heavy duty bad news on the enemy positions. I click on the unit... and realise that somewhere along the way I've mixed up my units, this isn't a spotter... its one third of a squad that got caught in some MG fire... the spotter team is still somewhere out there on the field... I was so disgusted I didn't even log out, I just turned the computer off and went to bed... -Derfel [ August 14, 2003, 10:02 AM: Message edited by: Derfel ]
  23. Argghhh... Ack..Affssghh *fighting for breath* Ed, you've done it again! I totally loved your "Pesant huts" and these look to be equally awsome! Whatever you do for a living I hope you did these on the company's time coz you deserve to be paid for them! -Derfel
  24. OK, since we're on the topic.... What ELSE floats, besides a witch... er... assault boat... -Derfel
