  1. With these new versions of different Theaters of War avaliable out thr now I can see a good reason to install something like CMBO/Alt to install these new versions and varieties into without the problem of one thing clashing with another. How do I go about doing this? When I put the disk in to install it doesn't give me the option to install again, even under a new title. How can I do this?
  2. I'm wondering if there will be two seperate CM discussion boards once CMBB is released? Since CMBB will have many new features and I think playing SU vs GE will create new tactics because of the terrain and equipment that it will be a game seperate from the CMBO we've all come to love so much. Of course I'm sure there will also be a lot of whining to include the new features into the origional game. Just curious!?
  3. Recently Dave T and I started playing a scenario labeled as #5 of The Band of Brothers scenarios. It's called "A Hell of a Lickin!" and I'm not sure of the author's name. He's not sure where he found it and I've been looking at various scenario files but have been unable to find it. Is anyone familiar with this scenario or the other's in this series? This one's been great fun and I'd like to have a crack at the other one's and send my thanks to the author. Thanks in advance. Goofy
  4. Hussar, what I seeing was a pink background with white lettering. Now is green with a grass texture. Guess it wasn't fully loaded up! Sorry! [This message has been edited by Goofy (edited 03-10-2001).]
  5. I looked... and looked! Pink background with white lettering! How about some contrasting colors for these old worn out eyes! LOL!!
  6. I've read in many wars sometimes unseasoned troops simply didn't "know enough" to realize they were beaten and should quit. Although this doesn't fit the bill for fanatisim it's quite applicable to the early war in Russia. As has been mentioned in this thread most of the troops the Germans were facing were conscripts and they tended to act at both ends of the spectrum, surrender at the first shot or fight to the bitter end. As far as the commisar units, should the squads show losing a man or two as their morale is boosted to show the "examples" being made? This seems to have been true. Do I understand why the Russians behaved the way they did? In that same History Channel feature on The War of the Century I remember one Penal Bn member saying his crime was speaking in protest when his teacher was denounced so he was sentenced to 3 years. He also spoke of serving with people convicted of being late for work. That was considered a crime against the state, like sabotage. It's hard for me, an American born in 1950, to understand how a Russian living in the late 30's and early 40's thought. The fact that the mentioned Penal Bn trooper didn't rail at the injustice of it all, rather just talked about it matter of factly tells me I may accept their outlook while never understanding it. Is there a way to set up unpredictability (ie all or nothing)? That seems to be more the case.
  7. Today's link to the Combat Mission site comes up locked. Also does when I try Manx's site directly. What's up? Server freak out again?
  8. After reading this thread (and DLing Tiger's Churchill!) I installed the game again and you know I can't even recognize it! I don't have a single origional bmp that I can find. And sounds, didn't recognize that either. I admit I was suprised to see it was in color! Could have sworn it was in WW2 B+W! A mod sluts mind is like a bad neighborhood, you shouldn't hang out there by yourself! ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! 9. Tiger, what camo mod is that gunner wearing? I don't recognize it but I sure do like it!
  10. I'd like to see the other direction, ACW and Napoleonics with the 3D options of CM. Of course the sheer size of the units involved and the "level" of command probably make both of these an impossibility! Still, one dreams!
  11. What about things with an armor flavor or from the German pov?
  12. I mentioned this in another thread but I have access to a plotter at work and I've done a few pictures of WW2 aircraft art for the walls of my computer room and I'd love to have some pictures depicting WW2 ground combat also. Does anyone know of sites where I can find artwork like that? I've considered doing some CM screen shots and using them. I've found that some things just don't look the same when you blow them up to poster size so I'm looking for many different things from different theaters of the war. Thanks!
  13. Maybe I'm getting a bit OT here but.... Zamo said: Remember how droll Steel Panthers got after several games were produced without any "new" glitz? Yes, yes, I know there was some, but by the time SP III had come out, the interface just seemed dated to me and I lost interest. Go to www.matrixgames.net and look for the free game Steel Panthers: World At War or go to www.thegamers.net and click on The Camo Workshop and look for the free game Steel Panthers: World War 2 version 4.0. The truth is that these and CM fill my WW2 ground combat needs period!! Both games take different approaches to the old SP game (SPWW2 uses basically the SP2 engine and has become more Windows friendly where SPW@W uses the SP3 engine in a Windows based rewrite of the game and both sport new graphics, sounds and features and are moving to the next step even as I write this!) and showed me what a gaming community can do for itself and others before CM came onto the scene. I think you'll find many of the same people are involved in all these games on the community side and the 3 games together have jaded me so badly in what I expect from other games and communities!! Sorry, let me get down off this soapbox before I embarrass myself anymore! ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! 14. Picked mine up flying Fighter Ace on the Zone. I was looking for a name for the squadron I had joined- TOO. Everyone had things like TOO_Badforu or TOO_Toughtohandle. I saw all the badass names and thought I'd lighten things up a bit! TOO_Goofy. Now RGP_CO_Goofy (Rebel German Pilots) I've continued to use it to remind myself that this is a game and I need to lighten up and enjoy myself. Also I was told on a forum once that to argue with me with that name made them feel like they were picking on someone off the "short bus". By the way, they took themselves WAY too seriously! ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... 15. I'd have to agree with Sgt. Steiner, it's the early war equipment that I'm looking forward to playing with and against. The MkIII as it evolved. The T-34 series as it evolved. The early Marders and SU's. I think what appeals to me the most is the period when there were no "Super" tanks on the field yet and maneuver was the king of battle! Everything required getting up close and personal and an anti-tank rifle was really what it said it was! It's just not the stand off duels for me. I want to have to put my hand on the enemy at times!
  16. I got lucky and have access to a plotter at work so I've been looking for sites with nice artwork that I can print out for my computer room. Right now I have 3 nice aircraft pics (prints them 22x30 inches plus a border) but haven't found any armor. Anyone have any suggestions? ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! 17. As I posted earlier today I have seen smoke rounds hit, splash in the ground and never ignite. I was watching the firing vehicle (SPA) and watched 3 smoke rounds be depleted, saw them hit but not explode, just make a splash effect, and never make smoke. Also I've noticed that smoke doesn't seem to last as long when it's raining (or at least it seems that way when I need the smoke).
  18. I'm asking this for two reasons, does the game engine shorten the length of time that smoke lingers in a rain situation and does wet ground swallow the smoke rounds? I've been playing a scenario where it's raining and smoke seems to go away faster. Is this just my imagination (or need for the smoke to linger longer)? Also I have some Priests firing smoke and have watched the rounds hit and see a splash (well, that's what it looks like, certainly not an explosion but does leave a spot on the ground!) and since I was clicked on the vehicle during this time I was watching the # of smoke rounds go down with each shot. I sort of expected the smoke to begin at any moment but 2 minutes later it still hasn't begun. Could it just be burrowing into the wet ground and therefore not making the smoke. I've even noticed that my vehicles seem to have a reluctunce to fire the smoke when ordered to. I'll click on the vehicle and as soon as I hit go they instantly shift ammo and target to something else (maddeningly distant to the action I might add). One more question, if it shows that the vehicle is reloading at the time I issue the order to shift to smoke ammo does this simply change the round going in to smoke and does this create a delay? If the gun is already loaded does the round in the chamber have to be fired/removed before a smoke round is put in the breach (creating a reload delay)? This isn't a scenario specific question, more of a weather specific type. :confused PS. 19. There needs to be something showing c and c on tanks. Maybe just a difference in the delay on movement or my favorite: Command Tanks! I see many people wanting to have sewers but I'd rather see thing move in the other direction, UP! Multistoried buildings were present in any "city" setting and I'd love to see them! Tank emplacements! Trenches! ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... 20. Originally posted by Abteilung: Why are there spotters for 14" naval cannon? These weapons were directed by spotter aircraft and not under the jurisdiction of local units. I tend to look at the 14' guns as "invasion support" because of the relative short distance it could be used from the beach and the availability of facilities for spotter planes. It's not like you could fly over the channel and do the spotting and by the time the facilities were available the battles had moved "Beyond Overlord" (catchy huh?! Maybe BTS could use that somewhere!) That's the reasoning I use anyway. The Naval FO seems to make sense. I do think there is plenty of argument on a historical and game level for light aircraft to spot for artillery but this becomes more of a "wish list" item for CM2 since they aren't coded for the game we have now. I tend to do as Shugger suggested with shifting fire to keep it from falling. Two added benefits of this are to possibly drop a spotter round to get your opponent (Would the AI react to this?) to displace before everything falls on them (I've seen it happen without the barrage falling.) and to determine the accuracy of your spotter's time to impact by clicking on your spotter and comparing his clock to the game clock. I know this is a function of troop quality but the fuzzy logic kicks me in the head every now and then when I try to determine accuracy of time vs quality of spotter. Some times (usually when I need it the worst!) it seems to get stuck on a time and not move or the 60 game seconds rolls off only 14 seconds on the spotter's clock. Good thing to know in advance of needing it! ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... I don't understand, is this the way you want to see it or are you just acknowledgeing that this is the way it currently is? Because it is. I know that after I plot my movement if I see the blue bar fill up my opponent is going to see the movie first, if I don't see it then I will see the movie first. I tend to play two games at once so while I've got a turn, they've got a turn. You don't feel like you spend much time waiting. I really enjoy PBEM but to my mind playing TCP/IP while using one of the commo programs is the ultimate, even better (and faster) than hotseat. That way we watch the movie simulataniously so as things happen I can taunt my opponent or moan when things hit the crapper at the very same moment he's doing the same. 22. Shhhh! We'll never keep it a secret like that! What's that saying about imitation and flattery? Problem is, as everyone has been saying, TS has gotten the knack (and reputation) of missing the mark! I'm just waiting to hear them compare it to CM, that's when I'd want to rip into them. ------------------ NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! 23. Found an MP3 of one but I don't know how to convert it to a wav file. Is it just a matter of renaming or does the format have to be changed. For that matter, can MP3's be converted to a format that a CD player could read and play? New (read totally ignorant)at sound files! ------------------ No one EXPECTS the Spanish inquisition!!
  24. Gee Bruno, 2nd Maine Cav here and I know of at least one other 2nd Maine trooper here. Both of us started about 1971. Also 3rd Inf Div. from the old WWIIHRS. Did Congress's Own (2nd Canadian, Benedict Arnold's boys) for the bicentenial! ------------------ No one EXPECTS the Spanish inquisition!!
